**Daylight**

A/N- Also written in the middle of the night. I haven't read a story of during the birth yet, so maybe I am the first to give it a try. J/K! HutressMinerva was the first about the birth! I hadn't read her story until now! Thanks for pointing that out! Sequel to "Watching from the Skies"

Evelyn awoke in the middle of the night to shooting pains in her womb. She laid a death grip into Rafe's back and stifled a scream. He got out of bed and put trousers on before running out to his dad's old truck and driving for the doctor.

Danny was lying on a cloud and gazed down at his beloved Evelyn, wishing he could help her. Tears were streaming down her face. She called out his name in agony. He winced and felt bad that he wasn't really there for her, holding her hand and assuring her that 'Everything is going to be alright'.

Almost instantly Rafe burst through the bedroom doorway, followed by Dr. Harrison. Danny could see sweat dripping down the back of Rafe's neck. He was having a nervous breakdown. Danny chuckled at the sight, but soon his eyes were averted elsewhere, the newborn baby boy was coming out.

Dr. Harrison handed Evelyn the baby Danny, who was wrapped up, sleeping in a quilt. Dr. Harrison exited with a yawning, "Congratulations!"

Rafe moved from the doorjam and sat on the bed next to the exhausted Evelyn. Soothingly he rubbed his fingers across her cheek as he gazed at the baby Danny.

"Here you are Danny. Here is your baby boy. I should have told you that you were going to be a father, so that you could have lived one more day to see him."

Danny heard the thoughts running through Evelyn's head and thought to himself, I am Evelyn, I am living here in heaven to see my baby.

Rafe carefully scooped the sleeping baby from Evelyn's arms and kissed her forehead. He carried Danny to his crib and set him down gently. They all slept soundly until Rafe and Evelyn were awakened at daylight by the cries of Danny Jr.

Rafe picked up the baby and began to sign a lullaby his mom had sung to him as a child:

Rock-a-bye baby,
In the treetop,
When the wind blows,
The cradle will rock.
When the bough breaks,
The cradle will stop,
And down will come baby,
Cradle and all.

Evelyn cried her heart out for the last time. She cried for Danny, because he wouldn't be the one caressing her and singing their baby to sleep. It would be Rafe, her one true love. She cried for Rafe then too, for he lost a best friend, Danny was almost a brother. But she realized, "I've lost, yet I've won. I have Rafe, and a part of Danny, his son."
