Alright, everyone! This is it – the last chapter of my story! I hope that you all have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
One Year Later…
As Daniel stood on the balcony of a rather large villa overlooking the coast as the day was getting started, he couldn't help but think back upon the whirlwind that had been the last year since he had asked Sasha to marry him.
Shortly after that night, everyone in the witch corps who desired it, including Daniel, were given their honorable discharges from the armed forces. Some of them, however, like Mio, Shizuka, and Trude, decided to stay on in the military and continue to serve in whatever manner they could. When they received their discharges, Daniel decided that since he no longer had his fighter to worry about, he would entrust his tablet and its contents to Ursula, as she had proven that she knew what to do with it. Besides, if his expertise was needed, he had copies of all the files and programs on his laptop computer (which he kept). Sasha also received word regarding the date that her family would be arriving in St. Petersburg by train, now that it was safe for everyone to return from the east. As they made arrangements to travel to St. Petersburg, they were joined by Sanya, whose family was also coming to St. Petersburg, and Eila and Nipa, who decided to tag along to support their friends.
As they waited at St. Petersburg's main train station, Sasha and Sanya were anxiously awaiting the arrival of their families and the reunion they had been looking forward to for years. Daniel was also anxious, but for a very different reason. He just hoped to make a good impression on Sasha's family, and that they would accept him as Sasha's fiancé. Sanya's family arrived on the first train, and when she saw them, she rushed to greet them with tears of happiness. When her parents saw her coming, they opened their arms and embraced her as she reached them. The others looked on at the happy reunion before Sanya motioned everyone over for introductions.
Several minutes later, the next train from the east arrived at the station, and Sasha anxiously awaited to see if her family was on this one. Soon, she spotted them getting off and, like Sanya, ran to greet them with tears of joy. Daniel looked towards where she was running and recognized her family members – her mother and grandmother from the photograph, and her father from her memories. Soon, Sasha motioned for Daniel to come over and Daniel walked towards them nervously. While her parents and grandmother knew of their relationship through Sasha's letters to them, they were a bit surprised to learn that they had become engaged. It turns out, Daniel needn't have worried, as Sasha's mother began to embrace him and her father said to him, "It's a pleasure to meet you, my boy." Her grandmother greeted him likewise, and said, "Thank you so much for everything you have done."
Later that evening, after they arrived at Sasha's grandmother's apartment, Sasha gave back the photograph she had taken before for safekeeping – the one that had helped light the spark between her and Daniel. To her surprise, her grandmother told her to keep it. "It seems that photograph is very special to you – isn't it, my little one?" she asked. When Sasha nodded in response, her grandmother added, "Besides, I think I'm going to need an updated family photo now." They all laughed as they sat down for their first family meal in ages.
For the next couple of months, Sasha and Daniel stayed with her family as they got to know each other, and Sasha's parents decided to move themselves permanently to St. Petersburg – partially to be near Sasha's grandmother. Also, Sasha's father was presented with an opportunity to set up a repair business where he could not only make a living repairing various mechanical items and vehicles, but he would also have the opportunity to create new gadgets from time to time.
Soon however, duty called once again, as Daniel received word from Britannia that the conference had been arranged with the starting date coming up. Daniel knew that this would be a massive undertaking and that he couldn't oversee this conference by himself. As such, he turned to the group of people he knew he could trust and count on to help him get the job done – the witches (or at least some of them, in any case). Sasha of course said she would go with him to Britannia, something for which Daniel was extremely grateful, as he wanted her to be his chief-of-staff for the proceedings. When they arrived in London, Daniel and Sasha were provided with a nice two-bedroom flat in the heart of London for their use during the proceedings, compliments of the Britannian government in gratitude for their heroism during the war.
In order to deal with the various delegations, he tried to bring in witches from as many different nations as possible. He was able to get Minna and Gundula to join him, and they would help him in dealings with the Karlsland delegation. He also got in contact with Lynne and Perrine, who were in Gallia helping with the restoration efforts, and they agreed to join him as well, with Lynne agreeing to work with the Britannian delegation, and Perrine very confident that her presence was needed to get the Gallia delegation on board. Perrine also brought in her friend, Sergeant Amalie Planchard, to assist her. Yoshika, who had been with Lynne and Perrine in Gallia, also volunteered for the conference, which Daniel was more than happy to have. He also brought in Mio to assist Yoshika in dealing with the Fuso delegation. For the Orussian and Suomus delegations, he brought in Sanya and Eila to help, while he brought in Nipa to assist both of them as needed. Lastly, he asked for Hikari to join him, as he wanted to teach her about diplomacy – something he felt would be very important for her Jedi training. When she asked Daniel if Takumi could join her, he agreed, seeing no problem in bringing in another respected witch to help.
As for the Liberion and Romagnan delegations, Daniel felt confident that he could deal with the Liberion delegation on his own (as a Liberion of sorts himself), while he and Sasha agreed that they would be very delicate with the joint Romagnan/Venezian delegation while hoping that they would be led by someone who would listen to them. As luck would have it, the delegation was led by the Duchess Maria – something that she had apparently insisted upon. Now that he knew that the Romagnans and Venezians were led by someone he knew, respected, and was on good terms with, Daniel was becoming more confident in the success of this conference.
At the beginning of the proceedings, Daniel addressed the delegations to provide the purpose and ultimate goals of the conference. He explained how they had been presented with a unique opportunity to significantly shape the future of humanity – that this was an opportunity that may not come again in their lifetimes. He also explained how being open-minded and willing to discuss the various issues was an important part of maintaining peace in the world. As he finished up his remarks, he stated, "You have all proven that you can come together and work towards a common goal for the greater good. Together, we were able to win the war. Well done! Now we must work to win the peace. We've got a lot of work ahead of us, so let's get started!"
While Daniel had provided the delegations a basic outline of what he had in mind for this new international system, nailing down the details of what would be included in the treaty so that everyone would agree to them was extremely difficult. While they seemed to agree in theory with the overall goals, they constantly questioned and bickered about the details. Daniel had to make sure that no one or couple of nations were distinctly advantaged over the others. In addition, Daniel had to explain some of the details he had in mind through the historical events of his own world, sometimes as an example of what could work, but mostly as a warning for what could happen.
After a couple of months of back and forth, and negotiations on many points, they were all able to agree to a framework document detailing the new international system that would be implemented pending ratification by each nation. The treaty outlined four areas of international policy that affected the lives of just about everyone around the world that could be addressed by this new system. The first was the international use of military force – while there was no immediate desire for anyone to use their military after the war, the new system would allow for agreements to be reached to determine what circumstances such force could be used in the future. Next was international trade, which affected the economies and general quality of life throughout the world. Then there was the stewardship of the world's natural resources. While businesses would be affected, Daniel had warned of the affects a lack of restraints on industry development and resource use would have, and it was decided that the new system would draft an agreement to find the proper balance between the environment and business interest. Last, but not least, the issue of human rights was given significant prominence, as everyone agreed that establishing human rights norms that everyone had to follow was essential to a peaceful world, though the extent to which they would reach would be a matter of debate.
In order to implement the goals of the treaty, it also included the formation of a council of representatives – one from each participating nation chosen in a manner to be determined by each nation – with a council president to be elected separately by the incoming council every term. Each council member (and the council president) would serve for a term of four years. While the council president did not have an official vote on the council except in the event of a tie, the president would have advisers similar to a presidential cabinet to help enforce the agreements and policies passed by the council. In addition, the council president would generally control the council's agenda (namely, what they would be debating and voting on), unless a supermajority two-thirds of the council overruled the president on something. In addition, the treaty set up a system of international courts, with judges from around the world serving, that would hear and decide civil and criminal cases relating to the treaty, and the agreements and policies issued by the council.
Finally, about two weeks before Saturnus, the delegations came to an agreement on the details of the new treaty and signed on to it. Now came the next phase – getting all of the nations who had participated to ratify it, as well as getting other nations that hadn't been able to send a delegation on board. At this point, everyone was given leave to return for their homes, as Saturnus was coming and there was a common desire to spend time with family during this time. Daniel was informed that he would be requested to return to London shortly after the New Year to begin the work of selling the treaty to the world, which Sasha agreed to join him for.
However, before everyone disbursed for home, Maria approached Daniel and Sasha. Apparently, she had been maintaining correspondence with Francesca and had heard of their engagement. After congratulating them on a job well done during the conference, she offered them the use of one of her villas on the Amalfi Coast as the site of their wedding. She even offered to make all of the arrangements according to their wishes regarding the food, music, and anything else the wedding would need. At first, Daniel and Sasha tried to refuse, as they felt the offer was far too generous, but Maria insisted. "You're both heroes of the entire world," she said. "Making sure you two have an exquisite wedding is the least I can do to show the gratitude of me and my people for all you have done." After hearing that, Daniel and Sasha could hardly refuse, agreeing to meet with her again early in the next year to work out the details.
After taking the next few weeks to return to St. Petersburg and celebrate Saturnus and New Year's with Sasha's family, Daniel and Sasha returned to London to get back to work. Using the provided flat as his home base, Daniel's diplomatic work consisted of meeting with each country's ambassadors at their respective embassies. At each meeting, Daniel worked to convince them that it was in their interest to sign on to the treaty, as this new international system would provide stability and peace that could be maintained for generations while still providing each nation with the ability to make important internal policies as they saw fit. At the beginning, Daniel felt that Britannia and Liberion were on board, with Romagna and Fuso agreeing soon after, thanks to the efforts of the Duchess and Daniel's influence with the Fuso government. After a couple more months, and many more meetings, he was able to get the endorsement of the representatives for each of the world's major powers, as well as many of the world's intermediate powers – more than enough to get the new international system started, as other nations could sign on to the treaty later down the line.
Upon completion of his work, he was informed that the Britannian government was giving him ownership of the flat – in further gratitude of his services. In addition, he would need it in the future, as he would be serving as an advisor to the new council – which would be based in London – for the foreseeable future. He had been asked if he would serve as the council's first president, but he declined. He knew that he was far too young to have such an important position, though perhaps he would reconsider if the offer was made to him in a decade or two.
At this point, winter had turned to spring, and Daniel and Sasha decided it would be the perfect time to see Daniel's adopted family in Fuso. They first stopped in Rome, where they met with Maria to work out the details of their wedding. At the end of March, they finally arrived in Fuso, where Daniel was welcomed home for the first time as a member of the Miyafuji family. When Daniel introduced Sasha to his adopted mother and grandmother, they welcomed her with open arms into the family. They had heard both from Daniel and from Yoshika about her, and especially about how happy she made Daniel.
As their summertime wedding approached, Daniel took the time they spent in Fuso to relax and, for Sasha, to get to know the Miyafuji family better. During this time, they were also able to host Lynne, as she was finally able to take the opportunity to see her dear friend's homeland. In addition, Mio asked to meet with them, and subsequently took them to the housing and temple complex she had shown Daniel previously. Once there, she informed them that she had arranged for the Fusoan government to provide ownership of the property to Daniel and Sasha, as a wedding gift, as well as its own token of appreciation for their service during the war. Mio also told them that the government would be restoring the complex, and that they could provide input as to what they wanted to add and include. Daniel and Sasha were speechless – not only did they have a place to live when they decided to spend time in Fuso, but Daniel also had a place where he could train Hikari!
Daniel wanted the restoration to get started as soon as possible, as he knew that Hikari would want to begin her formal training at the earliest possible date. At that particular moment, however, she was traveling the world with her sister, as they had always dreamed of doing. Daniel and Sasha decided that while most of the complex should be restored to look as it did originally, most of the rooms would be electrified, which could be done subtly, and that the main kitchen, toilet room, and an office space (which would also have a phone), would be modernized on the inside.
Before they knew it, it was time to head back to Romagna, along with the rest of the Miyafuji family (as well as Lynne and Michiko), to the Amalfi Coast, where Daniel and Sasha's wedding site awaited them. When they arrived, they were all blown away by the villa's size and beauty, especially when it came to the view they got of the coastline during sunset. Within a week, the villa was buzzing with activity, as all their families and friends from the 501st and 502nd arrived to celebrate their marriage.
For the wedding, Sasha decided to have Nipa serve as her maid of honor. As for Daniel, he really didn't have a male friend that he felt he was close enough to for the best man role, although Sergeant Hijikata and Captain Sugita were included in the wedding party. He then came to the unusual, though not unwelcome, decision to have Mio serve as his 'best person,' for lack of a better term, which she heartily agreed to. As Sasha was walked down the aisle by her father, Daniel could help but think how stunningly beautiful she looked at that moment, and that he couldn't wait to live his life with her.
The ceremony was also unusual because it featured aspects from multiple religions, with a minister and a rabbi sharing responsibilities in presiding over the ceremony. In addition, Daniel wanted to honor his adopted family's traditions, and arranged for several Fusoan blessings to be included during the ceremony. As they came to the vital part of the ceremony, the two gave their vows to one another, each promising to love and cherish the other, and to do everything they could to make each other happy for as long as they lived.
That evening, as the party was winding down, and Daniel and Sasha prepared to spend their first night together as a married couple, Sasha brought out a little surprise. In her hand, she held a vial containing a serum of some sort. She then explained that it was a special potion for witches – something that, once drunk, would prevent her from getting pregnant for the next six months. Before the wedding, they had discussed starting a family – something that they did want to do eventually – but had decided to wait a few years before doing that, as they were still quite young. In the meantime, they could take the next few years and enjoy just the two of them together. Once Sasha drank the potion and waited a few minutes for it to take effect, well, let's just say that it was a night neither of them would ever forget – for all of the right reasons.
As all of these thoughts went through Daniel's head, Sasha came up to him, gently wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, and asked, "What are you thinking about?" He smiled back and her and replied, "Nothing…and everything," before pecking her on the lips as Sasha giggled at his response. She then pulled him inside and said, "I have something for you." Curious as to what it was, Daniel followed her as she pulled out of a drawer a leather-bound journal and a very nice pen to go with it.
As he accepted this gift, Daniel exclaimed, "This is wonderful – thank you! But I have to ask, what made you think of these items in particular?" She continued to smile at her now-husband as she answered, "Well, I remember you telling me that one time about how you always wanted to travel the world and write about your adventures." Daniel looked at amazement that she had remembered that conversation as she continued. "I thought that sounded like a really fun adventure, so I wanted to help you get started." As he hugged Sasha in gratitude, she added, "And the best part is that I'm going to be with you for the whole adventure!" Daniel chuckled and said, "That sounds absolutely perfect!" He then kissed her, after which, Sasha asked, "So, any ideas on where we should go first?" Daniel thought about this as the possibilities raced through his head, from the various places he always wanted to go – like Machu Picchu, Australia, and Ireland – to places he had fond memories of – like various cities in the United States, including his hometown of Los Angeles. He finally came to what he thought would be the perfect starting place for this grand adventure. "Well, actually…"
And there you have it – I hope that you enjoyed the ending and the story overall. If you did, please let me know. Who knows, if enough of you ask for it, I might write a sequel. Otherwise, my plan is to start on another story for an entirely different anime (Mahouka Koukou No Rettousei, also known as The Irregular at Magic High School). If you like my writing and are interested in seeing more, this is what's coming down the planned pipeline.
