Chapter 25: The Perspective Of Alex
"I… I love you, Judy." Alex whispered as his vocal chords faded. He wanted to say more, but everything he tried to say was coming out as a snarl or growl. Horrified, he put his paws up to his neck as he writhed on the floor in pain before his intelligent, sapient mind faded. Coming to, he felt hunger. He felt desire. He felt the instinct to hunt.
Something caught the attention of his nostrils. Tentatively, he sniffed the air. It was the scent of prey, of his meal! Swerving his head around, he caught sight of his target. A rabbit. Baring his fangs, he began to advance on her. The bunny smartly began to run, though she was limping. Alex started to chase her, but something was thrown in his face.
Recovering from the projectile attack, Alex saw that it was a deer, a delicious deer! Without hesitation he started to tear into the deer. Once the cervidae was sufficiently mutilated, the wolf resumed chasing the bunny. He noted the fear in her eyes as he leapt into the air and pounced, clamping his teeth around her leg. And that was when everything changed.
Once his sharp, canine fangs sank into her leg, they drew blood, and Alex recoiled almost as soon as the rich taste of the crimson liquid came into contact with his tongue. That blood was not the blood of a meal. It was the blood of something special to him. Something sacred. Confused and befuddled, the white wolf sank to the ground and put his paws over his eyes in shame.
What was so special about this bunny? She could not be a brother or sister- that was impossible. And Alex did not have a pack- he had always been a lone wolf. Then it hit him. Mate! This rabbit was his mate! He loved her! He loved her all the way to the moon and back. Images flooded his mind, showing the two of them spending time together. The images seemed so foreign. How could he stand on two legs?
He then eyed the rabbit. A title surfaced- Judy . Was that what he called his mate? This… Judy… She was so afraid of him. He had to make sure she wouldn't fear him. Slowly and calmly, making sure not to bare his fangs or exhibit any aggressive behaviors, he walked on all fours towards Judy. Pressing his nose to her arm, running it all across her limb as he sniffed and inhaled the scent of his beloved.
"A-Alex?" The doe gasped. Hearing her make that noise sent shivers throughout every nerve of his body. A sense of familiarity at that noise. Those images resurfaced in his mind. Alex … he was Alex! That was his title, his calling sign, his… his name ! He knew he had to try and communicate.
Giving his mate a loving lick, he then opened his mouth. "Roooodeeee…" Alex grunted. He frowned. He needed to try again- that didn't come out right. "Roodee…" Alex whined, repeating. Seemed like he couldn't say it right for some reason. Right now that didn't matter. He just had to try. Try to tell her his feelings for her. That he, Alex, loved his mate, Judy. "Rarex ruv Roodee…" Alex softly murmured.
Indistinct noises could be heard as Judy pressed her paw on his head and ruffled the fur there. The sensation of her paw rubbing against his head was euphoric, heavenly. He'd do anything to keep Judy safe. Even if it meant getting himself hurt, or laying down his own life for hers. He would devote every fiber of his very being to protecting her.
Yelling was heard as he saw several creatures with what he assumed were weapons pointed at him. Alex snarled and hissed, baring his fangs. "DOWN, Alex!" Judy's voice rang out, and that made him clamp his jaws shut and stop growling. He didn't like it much, but if it was what Judy wanted he would do so.
Alex scooped Judy up and got her on his back before gracefully leaping out of the pit. He smelled someone else important- a skunk. He knew this skunk. She was not food. He would not hurt her. The skunk bent down and smiled at Alex, making his tail wag as she put something around his neck. This skunk began to walk him towards some sort of structure. Whatever it was, Alex wouldn't let Judy out of his sight.
