She stands in front of the vending machine groaning. Her t-shirt does nothing to obscure her burgeoning abdomen. Her hand rests on her back as she silently prays for the machine to work. She hears chuckling behind her. As the Captain turns she finds Fin standing at her shoulder.
"What is so funny?"
"Are you praying?"
"I just don't think it is too much to ask for the vending machine to dispense what I actually want this time."
"So you're tired of the fruit cups they keep putting in there?"
"It's like the vending machine company is trying to push me over the edge. Don't they know that I am heavily pregnant, and having to eat another fruit cup instead of chips might cause me to snap? I mean I am armed, and I am dangerous."
"I can see the headline now… SVU Captain kills Mike the vending machine man."
She squints, "This is where you tell me murder is a little over the line?"
"Nah, this is where I tell you that I got a family size bag of chips on my way in this morning, and I put them in your drawer. Step away from the vending machine, Captain. The last thing we need is for you to birth my goddaughter in the middle of the squad room."
"She is not scheduled for arrival for another month, Fin."
Amanda shakes her head as Olivia walks past her desk, "That is not what I have my money on."
"Perhaps you should go to a meeting instead of gambling on my plight," Olivia growls.
"It is an office pool. Even the guys in the evidence lock up have money on this," Amanda reveals.
"Captain, lets address your low blood sugar," Fin ushers her towards her office. He closes the door behind them. He lowers himself into a seat as Benson leans against her desk with her chips.
"I feel a lecture coming on," she calls him to the carpet.
"How long are you planning on doing this?"
"My job?" One eyebrow arches.
"Nah, sabotaging yourself. You are one of the most amazing human beings that I know, but you are not an actual super hero."
"I don't need this right now," she insists as she rubs her belly.
"You do. You can't work until the last minute. You are having a baby you need to prepare. Not to mention I see you over there giving Barba all your grief. I am not saying that your anger isn't righteous, but maybe you should just tell him the truth. You are angry at yourself for how this has transpired because you have feelings for him."
Olivia presses her hand against the small of her back, "I am not disagreeing with anything that you're saying, but it's going to have to wait." She calmly lifts her black boot out of a puddle on the floor.
"I wish I was responsible for your performance evaluation, because I would put in big bold print that you have the worst timing of anyone I have ever met."
"Can we talk about this in the car?"
"Are you in a rush to get this experience over with?"
"No, I just don't want to deliver my baby in my office if I can avoid it."
"You're unbelievable, you know? Going into labor when I am trying to give you a motivational speech about getting your act together."
Olivia offers him a devious smile, "It seems as if we have run out of time for that conversation."
They are at the hospital in less than ten minutes. Fin nervously waits in the hallway while the nursing staff head into the room. Soon a physician joins them. Olivia attempts to keep pace as the fury of energy, and activity are directed her way. Years of detective work cause her to question the situation as a clearly seasoned nurse exchanges a look of concern with the attending OB/GYN. The physician nods, and barks at the nurse.
"Page anesthesiology."
Madison suddenly steps between Olivia, and her view of the attending. She offers her saccharine sweet smile.
"Olivia the good news is that you're not going to have to wait very long to meet your daughter."
"Why are they paging anesthesiology?"
"Your baby is not reacting to the stress of labor in a favorable way. They are going to help her on her way. I know this is not what you had in mind for your birth plan. Right now we really just need to get baby out safely. Her heart rate is dipping below where we want to see it. So because of that they are going to prepare you for a c-section."
"I'm not ready. She's not ready. We have…"
Madison gently squeezes her hand as the anesthesiologist joins the party. "I know how brave you are. Today you're going to have to trust us. We're going to move quickly, and some of the things we are going to do are going to feel utterly terrifying. When it's all over you're going to have your precious baby in your arms, and that is what I want you to focus on, okay?"
Olivia nods as the tears stream down her face. They staff helps her shift into a sitting position that is favorable for the anesthesiologist. Her pulse races as the seconds tick by too quickly. Soon her bed is being removed from the room. In the hallway Fin joins her clad in hospital attire.
"You look ridiculous," she remarks.
"You didn't really think I was going to let you go in there alone, did you? Barba is in traffic. He's not going to make it here in time."
"Has he ever?"
