A/N: This is my first try of a songfic, so go easy on me. I don't own Escaflowne or 98 Degrees, though I would die from absolute joy if I did.

If she only knew,
What I knew but couldn't say.
If she could just see,
The part of me that I hid away.

Van looked up at the moon that now held the one person he'd cared for in an amazing way for a long time. He thought back to the day she'd left, how he had wanted to never let go of her as he pulled out of the embrace to hold up the energist.

If I could just hold her in my arms again,
And just say, I love you.
But she'd gone away, maybe she'd stay,
If she only knew.

"She'd said she'd wanted to stay, so why did I let her leave?" He muttered, raking his fingers through his raven hair. "Why do I care if she wanted to leave? It was what she wanted deep down. She would eventually miss her family, ad then wouldn't be happy here, no matter how hard she would try to hide it."

If she could just feel,
What I feel here in my heart.
She'd know it was real,
Pure and true right from the start.

Van looked down at Fanelia as it was quickly rebuilding out of the ghost of a town that Zaibach had left it in. "She deserves to see her family again. They're probably relieved to have her back. I should feel happy for her." He looked back up at the sky. "So why do I still hurt?" *Because you love her; no matter how much you try to disguise it, it's showing through.*

But I'm just a man who didn't understand,
What she was going through.
But she's gone away, maybe she'd stay,
If she only knew.

"I wonder how things would have turned out if I had told her how I felt about her." He muttered.
"If she knew, she would have stayed." He jumped and turned to see Merle sitting on the wall beside him looking at him intently. "Lord Van, you may not have noticed but I'm sure that, if you looked hard enough, you'd see she feels the same way about you."

And how, how did I let her get away
'Cause love, love is so easy to feel,
But the hardest thing to say.

"I know you regret letting her leave, Lord Van. Everyone can tell."
"Merle-"
"If she comes back, you'd better tell you how you feel." She jumped down and started back inside, then turned back to him. "You may not get another chance, and I'm sure she's hurting just as much as you are." She then left.

If she could just see,
What I see when I close my eyes.
All that I dream,
Surely she would realize.

Van looked back at the moon, thinking about what Merle said. "Maybe Merle has a point." He sighed and buried his face in his arms. "But it's too late. She won't want to come back. She's probably happy right where she is. Why should I make her leave?"

But like a fool I waited much too long,
To let her know the truth.
She's gone away, maybe she'd stay,
If she only knew.

Van's head shot up as his eyes caught sight of a very familiar glow. "Hitomi?" He watched as a beam of light broke through the clouds. He clinbed up on the wall, let his wings burst out of his back, ripping his shirt, and took off to the light, catching his one love in midair.
