Feelings of betrayal, abandonment, and being taken for granted culminate in a vengeful former Hairy Hooligan tapping into these feelings.

The villagers turn their back on Hiccup because he isn't viking enough. Only Gobber stays his friend. When Astrid's father makes her end her friendship with Hiccup, he snaps, exile himself and grow up in the forest training to shoot down a Night Fury.
