Set in the early days of International Rescue the boys are still finding their feet with their roles in IR. They are about to learn that family can mean a lot more than blood, who you need most might be who you least expect and that some rescues don't end once you leave the danger zone.

66. How to Train a Sociopath

She'd been subtly working each member of the team since she'd arrived. In the case of Grovner he'd proved most useful as a push button. Someone to rile up and watch self implode. Monty was little more than a sheep, unfortunately. Her initial plan to set the two against each other dissolved when she discovered they were cousins and had a strong working relationship. From her time in the loft she'd accidentally discovered Monty had a strong belief in the supernatural and now thought the house they were in to be haunted. Apparently this made a lot more sense than someone being in the attic. In another life she would have found a way to rig up moving furniture but that was just wasted energy - no matter how funny it would be./span/p

It had been a slow process. Salvatore and Steven dinned together, privately, every evening. Mikhael cooked for them and occasionally joined them. He prepared all of Salvatore's food and often batch cooked for the rest of the group as well. The fourth day she was there Oracle had found a reason to be in the kitchen and had shown a vague interest in what Mikhael was doing. Two weeks later Mikhael was teaching her how to cook and, whilst Jasmine had no strong feelings either way, Oracle found the time quite enjoyable and proved herself to be an able student. Often, after a briefing, Mikhael could be heard chatting away in his heavy accent about the best way to sauté potato's or how to tell if game meat was tender enough after cooking. As planned, the more Mikhael opened up to her, the more Salvatore noticed./span/p

As he bounced from seeing her as an ally to a potential threat and back again Oracle had to work on keeping her reactions level. She realised early on that he most likely didn't see her as either but instead was looking for a chink in her armour. To him, she was little more than a trifling puzzle; a girl who never blinked as he ordered her to test restraints or the weight of a blade in the underground torture chamber he doted on building. Yet that same girl moved personnel around to ensure the most vulnerable wouldn't be caught up in their scheme. Of course he knew and of course she knew that he knew. Oracle was steadfast in her insistence that the Thunderbird pilot was a job and she didn't believe in collateral damage. Then she pointed out that the blade he was examining was far too wide for the sort of damage he'd talked about inflicting and the conversation moved on, ostensibly forgotten by both parties but actually forgotten by neither. /span/p

He was a busy man who, without being seen to be micromanaging, knew exactly what each of his people were doing at any one time. In fact, what Oracle considered to be her biggest misstep (letting herself be guided by Jasmine's morality and attempt to help Aoife) had turned into the conversation she'd needed./span/p

On these evenings herself, Steven, Mikhael and Salvatore would eat exquisite food prepared by Mikhael and sometimes Oracle herself, and they would drink fine wines and they would talk about nothing consequential at all. Salvatore had a thing for something called a Springer Spaniel (a dog apparently) and Steven planned to use the money he'd made to buy a Dali (John informed her this was a painting.) Oracle deflected as many questions as she could and slowly built a back story based around Brian Dailey. How she'd initially planned on rolling him but, much to her surprise, had found him tolerable and, a short time later, useful. This way of viewing people was something Steven understood. Over the following weeks Oracle dripped out a story about how she'd considered quitting the life and settling down with him, but now Salvatore had made his offer she didn't see how she could. She would remain using Brain as an amusing pastime (something Steven approved of) and would take Salvatore up on his offer; a statement which pleased both her new permanent boss Salvatore and her new friend Mikhael./span/p

It was time to put her months of careful groundwork to the test. By now Jasmine had long since been packed away in a small box in Oracle's mind. She was simply too confusing to have around most of the time and, when she was helping Steven set up his chamber, Oracle found Jasmines feelings far too much to deal with. Oracle turned her fear into cold determination that this would never happen but she needed to silence Jasmine along with it. The feelings were too much of a distraction./span/p

Mugs could often be found rotten around - Mikhael cleared these as Aoife was not permitted in here - and there was a throw discarded on the back of a deep armchair./span/p

Oracle didn't have to fake the glower she now wore. She'd deliberately not asked Thunderbird Five for any details from their end but, realistically, she knew they'd need man power from the GDF to round everyone here up. She also knew that it wasn't in IR's interest to out her. Jasmine peeked out of her little box than and reminded Oracle that she did actually trust IR. Oracle internally grunted an acknowledgment before slamming the lid back down. Jasmine was not needed at the moment./span/p
