Chapter 109
Yue had never visited Ember Island before, and she was absolutely thrilled with her first impressions of the place. Having arrived three days before the start of the tournament, Yue and her girlfriends had made a very thorough exploration of the Ember Island beaches in particular. Up until now, Yue had thought that Kyoshi Island had the best beaches of all the resorts she had ever visited, but Yue was reconsidering her opinion now. The black volcanic sand of the Ember Island beaches was much finer than the coarse sand of Kyoshi beaches, and the turquoise blue ocean with its foamy white capped waves seemed particularly irresistible. With palm trees springing up everywhere, Ember Island was truly a tropical paradise to die for.
Azula had made an excellent call by suggesting that they rent a private cottage all to themselves, regardless of the expenses. Not only were they enjoying the privacy this afforded them and the views of the ocean were spectacular, Azula reasoned that this would also protect them from any interference from her father. Ozai himself was staying at the Nakamura family estate on the other side of the island, with Azula strategically having chosen to rent a cottage that was as far as possible from her old estate.
Unlike two years ago at the Fire Fountain City, this year the girls had extensive company of friends coming to Ember Island with them, courtesy of Zuko and Aang also taking part in the finals. They had listened to Azula's advice and also rented cottages for themselves, though not being financially quite as well off, they had to contend themselves with slightly sparser accommodations than Yue, Azula and Katara. Mai was coming to stay with Aang for the duration of the tournament, and with her fashion designer work bringing in steady income, Mai was able to foot the bill for their cottage. She had also brought Ty Lee with her from Caldera City, Ty Lee fresh out of her studies to become a certified nurse and happy to take a lengthy final vacation of six weeks before immersing herself in her new calling.
Sokka and Zuko were by now earning plenty between the two of them to afford a reasonably sized cottage, but even so, they had teamed up with Suki, who was once again present to cover the finals on behalf of The Harmony Ring. Suki was definitely grateful for the opportunity to stay at the cottage because her reporter salary was not particularly impressive and she would have never been able to afford such expenses on her own. Yue found it a little curious that Suki was hanging out with Zuko and Sokka so much as of late, starting to wonder if perhaps the boys were making Suki feel less lonely in more than one way. Yue's discreet inquiries so far seemed to suggest that nothing of that sort was happening, and Suki was simply very good friends with both Zuko and Sokka.
With a month of exhausting Pai Sho practice behind them, Yue was relieved that Azula had agreed to take the days before the start of the tournament very easy, with as little Pai Sho as possible. Yue definitely needed her batteries recharged before the intense and grueling tournament got under way. With the tournament kicking off on Azula's birthday on the last Sunday of August, they would be on Ember Island for six long weeks until the whole thing was finally over and they could return to Ba Sing Se, hopefully with Azula crowned as the new world champion.
There was a part of Yue that was already looking forward to going back, as much as she was enjoying her stay on Ember Island. Shortly after returning to Ba Sing Se, she would be taking up a permanent position as a teacher at Madame Macmu-Ling's academy for girls, a dream job for her as far as Yue was concerned. Yue knew that she was asking her new employer a lot by only joining the staff mid-October, instead of being there for the start of the school year in September. Madame Macmu-Ling had been very understanding about Yue's request to accompany Azula on this extremely important part of her journey, and Yue felt intense gratitude towards her new employer. She knew that Katara also was in a situation similar to hers. Katara's residency at her Lower Ring hospital was supposed to start in September and they had also agreed to wait until mid-October, when Katara would be ready to join the hospital staff full time.
After Azula had wrapped up her journalism studies back in June, she had also ended her work placement with The Harmony Ring, even though they had been desperate to keep her as a part of the staff and had offered to triple her salary. However, money wasn't something that seemed to motivate Azula at all. She still received funds from her monstrous father, and she still had plenty of sponsors constantly fussing over her and generating plenty of income for her. Katara and Yue's combined earnings had by now dropped to perhaps a third of the household's total income. They had lost their sponsorships, simply because they had stepped away from the spotlight and slightly faded from the public's consciousness. Yue still received a stipend from her father and Katara was still getting paid off by Ozai. Yue would soon also have her teacher's salary and Katara would similarly be paid during her residency, so it didn't seem that money would be an issue moving forward.
Whatever Azula chose to do next didn't necessarily have to be motivated by financial considerations, which was obviously a nice luxury that few could afford. Still, Azula had not given a single hint about her plans following the world championship finals. Yue supposed that it all depended on whether Azula would be successful or not, and for that reason, Yue and Katara were both highly motivated to make sure that their amazing girlfriend had everything she needed in order to prevail against her father.
Azula was relieved for the tournament to finally get under way. All the publicity events of the previous day had been particularly vexing and tiresome, largely due to the forced interactions with her father. Ozai had definitely not behaved with the same fake kindness as with Yue and Katara two years ago. No, both Ozai and Zhao had been trying to provoke her and Zuko throughout the various PR events. Zhao had even dared to openly flirt with her at one point, causing Zuko to try and kick his ass. Ozai had then intervened, and there had been some rather nasty shoving between father and son, with Zuko coming off slightly worse. The whole experience had been very nasty and unpleasant, and afterwards Azula had spent almost an hour meditating, something she did very rarely, but now found necessary in order to center herself.
Thankfully, it was hard to remain gloomy on Ember Island, even if the place held some fairly dark memories for Azula. The last time she had visited the island had been when she was seventeen years of age, and on that occasion, she had entrapped Zhao to make a move on her, causing her father to beat his right-hand man almost to death. Thinking of times before that visit, Azula had to dive very deep into her memories, as Ozai had rarely brought her to Ember Island following the divorce. Now that she and Zuko had managed to rebuild their relationship, turning it into something functional, it no longer felt painful for Azula to remember those days when she had been eight or nine, having her big brother helping her build the biggest sandcastle yet or watching over her to make sure that she didn't wade too deep into the ocean.
And now she got to play on the beach with Zuko again, although this time it was not by building sandcastles. Come the evening, Azula and all of her friends met at the beach and split themselves into teams of three to distract themselves further with rather passionate matches of beach volley. Obviously, Azula teamed up with her girlfriends, and even if Yue and Katara weren't exactly great at the game, they still did fairly well against the all-boys club of Sokka, Zuko and Aang. Katara's movements were very well coordinated on the account of her being a former swimmer, and while Yue was slightly less athletic than her two girlfriends, she was a little taller than Katara and Azula, and did a good job patrolling the net. Still, neither Azula nor Zuko's team could hold a candle to the team of Mai, Suki and Ty Lee. Suki and Ty Lee were incredibly athletic, and Mai on top of being tall and lanky, was also quite cunning in where she placed her shots. Try as hard as they might, it didn't seem like this trio would ever be beaten, but even their doomed efforts to bring down Mai's team provided what Azula was after the most – plenty of fun and distraction to remove the pressure of winning the tournament.
Properly rested and relaxed, Azula arrived at the local theatre house in a good mood. The championship finals would be held at the building which was home to a rather embarrassing theatre troupe called the Ember Island Players. They had toured the Earth Kingdom back in the day when Azula had been working in the arts and culture section of the Ba Sing Se Herald, and she had absolutely destroyed them with a well-deserved scathing review in the Herald. There was another reason why Azula was in a good mood and it was because today was her twenty-fourth birthday. Since she was facing Zhao Sakamoto in the first round, Azula was highly determined to present herself with a gift by utterly decimating her father's perverted lackey. In the other games of the first round, Zuko was facing Piandao, while Aang had the pleasure of dealing with Ozai.
Azula made sure to stick with Zuko and Aang until the matches were about to begin and it was time to take their seats. She really didn't want to wander around on her own and be intercepted by either Zhao or Ozai, who would no doubt try some of their tricks to knock Azula off her stride. Certainly, Azula had her new techniques taught to her by "Guru" Pathik, but Azula wanted to avoid using them unless absolutely necessary. She didn't think that she would need any tricks to defeat Zhao Sakamoto as they both sat down at their table and the game between them got underway.
Azula remembered the lessons she had tried to push on Katara and Yue when they had taken part in the finals, and the most important of those lessons was to keep their games short, especially at the start of the tournament. Even if nobody at the finals was an elderly statesman like Gyatso had been, fatigue would build up for everyone. Azula was in no mood to toy with Zhao, as much fun as it might be, so she seized initiative right out of the gate, haranguing him all across the board. Azula could tell that Zhao had only ever had one plan when he sat down at the table, and that was to stall her and hopefully force a draw. Azula wasn't going to fall for any of his obvious traps with which he tried to achieve his goal, attempting to simplify the situation on the board and force as many tile exchanges as possible. Azula had known that this would always be Zhao's strategy, and she and her girls had prepared for it.
It took Azula mere thirty moves to put Zhao in a very difficult situation, facing multiple threats everywhere across the board. Finding the optimal defensive move became harder and harder. Zhao was starting to struggle for time, having to rush some of his moves as the time limit approached. When these rushed moves resulted in several lost tiles, Zhao gave up his attempts to resist. When the tournament official approached them with the intent to reset their clocks, Zhao instead announced his resignation, giving Azula her first win of the tournament. Fighting revulsion, Azula exchanged a reluctant handshake with Zhao before she walked off the stage to the applause of the spectators.
Azula briefly considered staying behind and waiting for the other games to finish, but a glance at the display board showing the situation in Zuko's game with Piandao suggested that those two were in for the long haul. Ozai appeared to be winning against Aang, which was something Azula had expected. Becoming aware that Ozai might soon finish his game against Aang prompted Azula into action, and she turned to leave the hall in order to face the reporters gathered outside, ready to assault her with their usual inane questions. Azula steeled herself, knowing that she only had to survive them for a few minutes, and then she would be free to rejoin her girlfriends and spend the rest of her birthday enjoying the surprises that Katara and Yue had in store for her.
Katara was delighted about the way Azula's birthday had unfolded thus far. Yue's idea to rent a luxury yacht for a party had proved to be a splendid one, and it hadn't even been as expensive as Katara had initially feared. They had also chosen the option to have some catering for them, and together with a steady stream of party snacks and booze, the caterers had also provided them with an impressive lemon-vanilla birthday cake, something not overly sweet so that Azula could properly enjoy it.
It was simply an amazing, relaxed day, getting wined and dined onboard of a luxury yacht as it made a wide sweeping circle around the Ember Island, providing them all with astonishing views of the isle, surrounded by the turquoise green waters. Later in the afternoon, they made a stop at a secluded bay so that all those who wanted to partake could enjoy some snorkeling. Katara was a little disappointed that they hadn't been able to talk Azula into joining in. Even though Azula was a decent swimmer, water simply wasn't her element and she never felt particularly comfortable in it, not to mention that she was afraid of some kind of a freak accident that could endanger her participation in the tournament. In the end, Katara and Yue had been joined by Suki and Sokka, with the others turning down the invitation. Katara had felt a little guilty for enjoying something that Azula was not partaking in, but since Azula still seemed to be having a great time sunbathing on the deck while chatting away with Mai, Ty Lee, Zuko and Aang, Katara's guilt faded quickly. The four of them had then spent roughly an hour snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the bay, with Sokka constantly trying to unsuccessfully scare them by pretending to be a shark.
Once the snorkeling foursome were done with their fun and rejoined the others on the deck, they discovered that Azula had ordered for the champagne bottles to be opened and the festivities seemed to have advanced to the next phase. The captain informed them that they would be staying in the bay for another two hours until it got dark, before returning to the port under the cover of stars, so that they could enjoy some particularly romantic views of the sparsely illuminated coastline.
Soon enough, Katara had settled in comfortably on the cushions next to Azula, Yue on the other side of the birthday girl, as they all raised their champagne flutes to Azula's health. "To many more impressive victories like today, love," Katara said, leaning in to kiss Azula's cheek.
"And I would say to winning the title," Yue added, raising her glass only to then notice Zuko giving her a mildly admonishing stare. "But I have a feeling that some here might disagree with that," she added with a chuckle, before slipping a quick kiss to Azula.
"Hey, as long as one of you ends up defeating Ozai," Aang said joyfully. He was sitting in one of the folding chairs nearby, with Mai somehow having managed to tuck herself into her boyfriend's lap. "Let me tell you that I did not enjoy playing your dad one bit, Azula," Aang said, shuddering. He hadn't done the whole resistance to Ozai's glaring practice beforehand, and had suffered badly because of it, Ozai scoring a rather easy win over the Air Nation lad.
"I would prefer if you referred to him as Ozai, or as my father, if you must speak of him at all," Azula said. "Please don't call him my dad. That almost humanizes him, and I don't want to do that. It's much easier for me to focus on destroying him if I can dehumanize him. But if I'm being honest, he has dehumanized himself in my eyes with his very own actions."
"Sadly, I know what you mean," Zuko sighed, shaking his head. Sokka put a comforting arm around his boyfriend's shoulders, pulling Zuko tighter against him. The two of them were already on their second glass of champagne, looking far more relaxed than usual. Zuko had also stopped scowling, his face having assumed that annoyed expression ever since he had failed to achieve a breakthrough in his game against Piandao which had ended in a draw.
"Sorry I gave him such an easy win," Aang apologized, unnecessarily in Katara's opinion. "I'm going to prep harder and he's not going to find me such an easy mark the next time. It's a little annoying, though, because after the next round he's going to have two wins out of two, and we really don't want him to run away from the pack." Aang was referring to Ozai's next opponent being Zhao Sakamoto, which meant a guaranteed win for Ozai.
"We're going to stop him, don't you worry about that," Azula said. Her next game was against Piandao. Judging by how hard he had pushed Zuko, the former world champion from Shu Jing was in a very good shape, so Katara knew that Azula was going to face stiff opposition.
"Yeah, you better worry about your next opponent, Aang," Zuko said, smirking. He was going to face Aang in the next round, and if their previous record was to provide any indication, Zuko was highly likely to prevail.
"I know I'm up against it, Zuko," Aang said earnestly. "But I think I might surprise you yet."
"I'll think of a nice surprise for you if you manage to wipe that silly smirk from Zuko's face," Mai teasingly told her boyfriend.
"Ooh, extra motivation!" Aang cheered, then proceeding to kiss his girlfriend. The champagne had put everyone in a happy and mellow mood, so nobody felt like yelling at them for being gross.
"Speaking of things that are scary," Sokka spoke up, pointing at Ty Lee nearby. Ty Lee had spent the previous half an hour or so walking around the top of the railing of the upper deck, as if traversing a balance beam. Some of the crew members as well as the caterers had completely freaked out upon seeing Ty Lee maintaining a perfect balance as she walked around the railing. And now she was doing the same with a champagne flute in her left hand, taking the occasional sip which didn't seem to have any effect on her sense of balance.
"She's totally freaking me out here," Suki also admitted, looking at Ty Lee with a mixture of both fear and admiration. Katara was pleased to see that Ty Lee and Suki were getting along. Azula had sat Ty Lee down on the day of her arrival at Ember Island to make sure that Ty Lee didn't blurt out anything about her and Jet getting together in Yu Dao. They really didn't want Suki to find out this way and ruin their gathering of friends, and it seemed particularly pointless to do in case Jet had perished, which was what they all expected to have happened. If Jet somehow ended up alive and made his way back to Ba Sing Se, Katara was full of intent to make him tell Suki everything, and Azula and Yue had promised to back her up on this.
"Why do you have so little fate in me?" Ty Lee laughed. "I could do cartwheels on the railing if only someone would hold my glass."
"Don't worry, Ty Lee, we believe that you could," Azula replied hastily. Katara nodded in agreement. She knew that Ty Lee was capable of incredible feats of gymnastics, but she was slowly becoming impaired by alcohol, and Katara hoped that they would find a way to coax Ty into climbing down from the railing.
"How about joining me for a game of twister, Ty Lee? Why don't we take on Sokka and Zuko?" Suki called out to the Fire Nation girl, clearly on the same wavelength with Katara and wanting to get Ty Lee down from the railing. "Are you up to the challenge, boys?" Suki looked at the slightly tipsy couple. Sokka and Zuko exchanged glances before nodding in agreement.
"Alright, that sounds fun," Ty Lee agreed much to everyone's relief as she hopped down from the railing and came over to the twister mat. Soon enough, the four of them were hopelessly entangled, laughing all the way as Aang spun the spinner and called out the color and limb combinations.
Katara soon began to feel like joining in as she sat at Azula's side and observed the antics of the others with a broad grin on her face. She would probably have to partner up with Yue, though, because Azula held herself above such lower-class entertainment as a game of twister. It seemed really fun to Katara, though, especially in the right company. She'd probably ask Sokka and Zuko to take a break while they challenged Suki and Ty Lee, but then again, maybe Yue wouldn't want to do something that involved such close physical proximity with Ty Lee. Perhaps it was better to just forget about the whole idea, but it was still curious to see how Suki seemed to enjoy the activity despite being Sokka's ex.
In fact, Suki was getting along with Sokka and Zuko so well that Yue had actually developed some crazy ideas and eventually shared them with Katara. Katara had found it really hard to imagine Sokka and Zuko being onboard with something like that, but when she had learned about the three of them sharing a cottage on Ember Island, Katara had become just as suspicious as Yue. She had finally managed to subtly confront Sokka about it a few days ago, and her brother had categorically denied all such rumors, telling Katara to stop imagining threesomes everywhere. In Sokka's own words, just because Suki was his gorgeous ex who also got on really well with his boyfriend, it didn't mean that they had some kind of a twisted agreement where he and Zuko were basically keeping Suki warm for Jet, and Katara was out of her mind if she thought that there was anything else between them other than friendship. The whole conversation had made Katara feel even more confused than before, which upon further reflection, might have been Sokka's intention.
In any case, Katara was over thinking about her brother's relationships. He was a grown ass adult and could figure things out without her interference, and Sokka had been doing that successfully for a while now. Katara felt like she had a good handle on her curiosity now. She definitely was not planning to create some kind of a situation where they would have Suki alone with them so that they could get her drunk and coax the actual truth out of her. Katara was so done with that sort of meddling into the lives of others.
Instead, Katara had Azula and her tournament performance to focus upon. She leaned in even closer to Azula, enjoying the sensation of Azula's skin against her, both of them wearing nothing but their bikinis. Katara felt greatly encouraged by how relaxed Azula had been so far, and she considered it a good sign even if the tournament had only just begun. Katara had expected Azula to show some signs of tension as soon as she came into contact with her father, but so far Azula was holding up and she wasn't exhibiting any worrying signs at all. Katara hated to think that the awful training by "Guru" Pathik had actually done Azula any good, and even if some of the things Azula had learned, such as deep meditation, appeared very helpful, Katara still hated that Azula had put herself through something like that, because it could have so easily backfired and caused a massive setback.
Azula had proposed a similar approach to the tournament as she had preached to Yue and Katara two years ago. Azula intended to keep her games as short as possible at the start of the tournament, even if it meant agreeing to a draw in some of the games which she might have been able to win at the great cost of expended energy. This worked well in conjunction with her attempt to keep herself just a few steps behind the leaders throughout the early stages of the tournament, trying to fly under the radar. Azula doubted whether she would truly be able to escape Ozai's attention, but if she could make Piandao, Zuko, or even Aang appear as more credible threats to her father's title, then Azula felt that it would take the spotlight away from her. The plan was to manufacture a surge as the tournament came to a close, with Azula feeling both relatively fresh physically, and also mentally, as a result of having reduced pressure on herself throughout the tournament.
Katara's thoughts about Azula's chances to prevail against her competition were interrupted by some shouting and yelling by the foursome involved in the game of twister. It appeared that in all the chaos, Suki had lost the top of her swimsuit, and she emerged from the pile of humanity appearing embarrassed, trying to cover herself up as quickly as possible. Once Suki had managed to restore some decency to her appearance, she whirled around to face Sokka and Zuko, glaring at the two boys. "Alright, which one of you pulled that off?" she demanded angrily.
Zuko and Sokka exchanged confused looks. "I wouldn't do something like that, three glasses of champagne or not, you know that, Suki," Sokka said apologetically.
"Well, it wasn't me, either," Zuko said. "I would never do something so disrespectful to a friend, Suki."
"I want to trust you, but one of you must've-" Suki began, at which point Ty Lee betrayed herself by starting to laugh. "It was you?" Suki turned on Ty Lee, pointing accusingly at the other girl. "Why don't you flash your own tits, skanky bitch?"
"Pfft, ask and you shall receive," Ty Lee rolled her eyes, her hand sneaking behind her back to undo the clasp of her bikini top.
"Stop!" Katara was the first to react, shouting before Ty Lee had gone through with her intentions. "Don't do that, Ty Lee, please," she implored. "Just how many drinks have you had today, Ty?" she asked, relieved that Ty Lee had stopped just in time. It was important to stop Ty Lee and Suki from getting into an argument, because there was always the danger that Ty Lee's involvement with Jet in Yu Dao could come out and cause a lot of tension.
"Four," Ty Lee replied. "That I know of," she added, giggling drunkenly. "I have no idea. Once I've had four drinks, I can no longer count past four."
"See, this is why I will never play twister, especially with someone who's this sloshed," Azula rolled her eyes. Katara nodded in quiet agreement. She wasn't exactly overly shy about her body, not anymore, and she wouldn't have had any problems with baring herself if it had been just her and the girls, but the presence of the boys would have definitely made her extremely embarrassed and possibly even petrified with shame.
Fortunately, no more potentially risky and embarrassing incidents followed, and after the sun had fully set some half an hour later, the yacht began to slowly make its way around the island following a particularly scenic course. The sky above was darkening quickly and Katara, Yue and Azula were leaning against the railing slightly away from the others, savoring a private moment together as they enjoyed the beauty of the night lights coming from the illuminated island ahead of them.
"Did you enjoy that?" Katara asked softly, lowering her head on Azula's shoulder.
"Absolutely," Azula replied, her tone of voice indicating complete sincerity. "It was just about the perfect day on Ember Island, despite some of Ty Lee's antics."
"I'm so glad that we managed to make you happy on your birthday," Yue said, moving to stand a little behind Azula, leaning in to place a kiss on Azula's neck. Katara could feel the excited tremble running through her Fire Nation girlfriend as she rested her head on Azula's shoulder.
"You know me so well. This was exactly what I needed," Azula replied. "Also, the trip gave me a lot of ideas about what to do on other off days. There are many hidden places on Ember Island that you won't find out about from the tourism brochures. I just spied a beautiful lagoon I remember from my childhood that we should come and explore."
"That sounds lovely, Azula," Katara smiled against her girlfriend's shoulder. "I would definitely appreciate suggestions."
"Indeed," Yue added. Her voice became sultry as she spoke up again, her palm slipping lower to rest on Azula's lower abdomen. "And once we get back to the cottage, I think Katara and I will spend some time exploring a lagoon of a different kind, if you know what I mean…"
"That was terrible," Azula groaned. Katara agreed wholeheartedly, but the awful joke still sent a spike of excitement straight to her core, and the way Azula had trembled again suggested a very similar reaction.
"Jokes aside, we do have something prepared for you back at the cottage, Zula," Yue whispered.
"Okay, now I'm extremely curious," Azula said, unable to keep the excitement out of her voice.
"Let's just say that we're about to fulfill some of your role-playing desires, Zula," Katara said, turning to kiss Azula's cheek. This was definitely one of those special occasions when Katara and Yue were more than happy to indulge in Azula's fantasies. Katara had her sexy nurse's outfit ready and prepared back at the cottage, stethoscope and all. Yue was similarly prepared to dress up as the strict schoolmarm, with cute little glasses to wear on the tip of her nose, and a plastic ruler for some light spanking of misbehaving girlfriends. Katara realized that she couldn't wait to get back to the cottage as quickly as possible.
"Katara?" she heard Azula asking her. "Could you do something for me, love?"
"Yes, what is it, Zula?" Katara asked.
"Could you please go and ask the captain if this yacht can go any faster?" Azula asked in a completely serious tone of voice. Katara and Yue exchanged glances, starting to laugh. "I wasn't actually making a joke, you know," Azula said sternly.
"Oh, we know, love," Yue replied. She then reached out and took Katara's hand. "Come on, Kat, let's go and speak with the captain together. I'm sure we can manage to convince him that we must return to the port with the utmost urgency."
