Chapter Four: The Deal
A few hours later, Raine and Eda were sitting in Raine's Apartment lounge eating the food of the gods that is McDonald's Chicken Nuggets and fries in civilian clothing. No, the Food wasn't in civilian clothing. That would be stupid.
Unless...
Right, right, sorry. On with the story.
"So Rainestorm." smirked Eda, twiddling her fries nonchalantly "How's it been?"
Raine smiled, letting out a sigh "Tiring." Not like They needed to say so, thought Eda. The bruise-like bags under their eyes looked like they had particularly large elephants laying about in them. Or particularly tiny elephants. Whichever description you prefer.
Eda sighed, placing a hand on their cheek "When was the last time you slept?"
"When was the last time you slept?"
"Touche."
There was a short, uncomfortable silence.
Raine sighed. This next topic of discussion was going to be... difficult to discuss.
"What are you doing back in the city, Eda?"
Eda smiled in a casual fashion, gesturing to the window with her hands "Oh, you know... wanted to get a taste of home-"
"You know you can't lie to me, Eda."
Eda gave a sad smile "Worth a shot. I know since... the incident-" Both of them flinched slightly "I haven't been doing the greatest health-wise... what with the zero cartilage on my right leg," at this, she tapped said leg with her cane "The amputation," she rolled up her right sleeve to reveal a shining metal prosthetic "And the... and the..." she trailed off for a second, rubbing her left arm for a moment.
She shook her head, moving on "Anyway, I'm not gonna do nothing while my city is in danger."
"Eda..."
"Let me finish!" she told them, carefully standing up on the couch and spreading out her prosthetic as she put on a dramatic tone "I'm gonna start teaching... the next generation of vigilantes!"
Raine breathed a sigh of relief "Oh, thank god. I thought you were gonna don the mask again."
Eda chuckled sadly "The Owl Lady's retired, Raine. I'll miss those days, but there are other ways I can help. Besides, I can vandalise my sister's car every once in a while."
Raine laughed so hard they felt like their spleen exploded "Good to have you back, Eda."
"Good to be back, Rainestorm." Smirked Eda, winking at her ex and making them blush with embarrassment "So, what case are you working on this time?"
"The murder of a Blight Industries employee. The Blights are involved, but I don't know how, why or how to prove it."
"Anything I can do to help?" asked Eda, tapping her stick with her long, pale fingers.
Raine sighed "Okay. But please don't try and fight with me. If someone gets you in the leg..."
"I know. Show me some of the facts, will ya?"
Raine grabbed the case file off their desk and showed it to Eda.
After a few minutes of going through them, she looked up "Welp, I'm stumped. Have the Blights been hanging out with anyone new recently?"
"I did meet their Butler recently. And he isn't just a Butler."
"Did he have any weapons on him?"
"I could sense a pistol in a shoulder holster. Blight Industries 76. pistol, I think. "
"Well then." Smiled Eda "Let's go and ask him a few questions, then."
Raine nodded, walking over to their bedroom. They lifted up their Ottoman bed, where several things lay, including a large box.
Raine entered a code into a Combination lock and opened the box, revealing...
Another box!
Once again, they put in a code, revealing...
You guessed it, yet another box!
Okay, this one actually contained the suit.
...
Alador Blight sat by his wife's bedside along with his children. Amity, Edric and Emira's expressions were unreadable. Not that Alador noticed.
Alador, on the other hand, was feeling a lot better than he had before. After all, Odalia was starting to wake up.
After five minutes, she whispered something, almost too faint to hear.
"Alador... Alador..."
"What is it, dear?" Alador asked, kneeling by the bed and clutching her hand.
"How long... have I been asleep?"
" A day and a half, dear." Alador told her, gravely.
"That's good." said Odalia, briskly sitting up, her strength miraculously returned "Nothing business-related will have happened yet."
As she leaped out of bed and shooed her children out, Alador felt torn. Torn by both relief of his wife being OK and the feeling of hurt at the first thing Odalia thought of being business.
He shook his head, clearing these thoughts "Are you okay, dear?"
"As a matter of fact, Alador." said Odalia, rolling up her dollar-sign pajama sleeves to reveal toned muscles that weren't there before she took the serum "I have never been better.
"You see, I have made a deal..."
...
"Okay Luz!" Announced Gus, getting off his computer at five o'clock in the afternoon "After hours of research, I've thought of a way to activate your strand-powers!"
Luz nodded, looking up from her phone "That's great, Gus! What've you got?" she asked, slapping her hands againsts her legs in excitement as she sat on Gus's bed.
"Well, try focusing on your weird wrist muscle a moment." Gus told her "I read that a lot of heroes did that when they're learning to use wings or their extra arms or whatever."
Luz nodded, closing her eyes. She concentrated on the weird wrist muscle for a second, trying to will herself into using it.
At once, a small, white, sticky projectile shot out of her wrist, hitting the ceiling with a dull schwelching sound.
"OH. EM. GEEEEEEE!" Gus screamed, doing an excited dance like the lovely nerd he was "You figured it out!"
"THIS IS AMAZING!" squealed Luz "Hey! Let's get started on costume design!"
"Great idea, Luz!" said Gus, sprinting over to his computer desk and putting the keyboard to one side
"I was thinking something fantasy-style... Maybe parts of my old witch costume?"
"A cape is a must..."
"A utility belt?"
"I know how to get some stretch cotton..."
As they talked, they drew and drew and drew the design.
Muscly arms...
A dark Purple witch's hat...
A stunning black one-piece suit with a star on it...
A yellow utility belt...
Some old riding boots that had once belonged to Luz's Dad...
A bright sparkly blue cape that the wind danced with in an impressive manner...
And finally, a domino mask to conceal Luz's identity.
Luz clapped her hands, excited "I'll ask my mom if you can come round to my house tomorrow to make the costume. We'll say it's for a cosplay and she won't suspect a thing."
"This is the greatest plan you have ever come up with!"
"Definitely better than the 'trying to make dogs regurgitate food' idea."
"I still have nightmares!"
"So do I..." Luz shuddered, grimacing
At that moment, she got a text from her mom.
She looked at her messages. It looked like she had gotten a text from Amity and Willow a couple days ago, too. In the excitement, she hadn't really been looking at her phone.
Mom's text read: Be there soon, Mijah!
Amity's read: You feeling better, Luz?
Willow's read: How are you doing, Luz?
Luz blinked. In the excitement she had forgotten all about them.
"Hey, Gus?"
"Yeah?"
"Should we tell Willow and Amity?"
The twelve-year-old thought to himself for a moment "Not yet. Let's be... dramatic about it."
"What do you mean?"
"PICTURE THIS: The day after your first night out, you're all over the news and everyone's talking about you. Then we have a sleepover at Mine, and you appear at my window. You climb in, and lo and behold! You take off your mask!"
Luz took a deep breath, placing her hands together "Gus... THIS IS AN AMAZING IDEA!"
...
Sometime during the day and a half Odalia was asleep...
Odalia woke up.
She was sitting in an old-fashioned green armchair in a white, window-less room across an identical chair. To her left was an oak door with a claw-shaped knob.
She looked around. Where was she? Why was she in a room where the only feature was two chairs and a door? She would never have picked a design so horrible.
At that moment, the door opened, revealing...
Herself.
"Good evening, Odalia." said her doppelganger with a smile Odalia knew had been on her face many times before.
"W-what- h-how?" stammered Odalia, for once in her life lost for words (I mean, wouldn't you be?).
Her double sat down, calmly pressing her fingers together.
"Wh-who-?"
"Pull yourself together!" The lookalike barked "You're a businesswoman, for crying out loud! Act like one!"
This snapped Odalia out of it.
"Who are you?" She asked, pulling herself together.
"I am... well, I suppose I don't really have a name. I'll let you give me one somewhere along the line." Replied her double, sitting down on the other chair with complete and utter calmness "I am what they call a split personality."
Odalia's heart skipped a beat. "I-Impossible! I'm not-"
"Insane? Oh, no no no no. You are far from it. It's just that the serum created me in your mind. I know that does sound like insanity, but you can get rid of me whenever you like." the double explained in a calm manner "But before you do, I want to make a deal with you."
"...Go on."
The doppelganger smiled "You have a problem. 'merican Weapons."
Odalia raised an eyebrow "Go on."
"You are a businesswoman. You know how to fire a gun, and you have a killer instinct. However, you're a businesswoman, not a warrior. You get people who could fail instead of doing your own dirty work. I'm something more effective than a warrior. I'm a monster."
"You're offering to ruin my rival companies?"
"Indeed. I destroy their funding, you buy what's left and you not only keep the company, but you also get richer."
"And what do you get out of this?"
"Me?" The lookalike adopted a look of mock innocence "Well, you see I delight in destruction, decimation and demolition."
Odalia thought for a moment.
On the one hand, this 'Split Personality' was really something she should get looked at.
On the other, she'd be deemed unfit to be CEO of the company, and she was desperate.
"How do I know you're telling the truth? That you'll hold up your end of the bargain?"
"Since when have you mistrusted your own mind?"
Good point. thought Odalia, making a descision.
"You are to conceal my face." Odalia told the woman opposite her "And you cannot do anything to hurt my company."
"I wasn't planning to, 'Partner'."
...
Now, 'merican Weapons Facility #21, Gravesfield City, Midnight...
General Greene was at the building outdoor 400m running track, observing the serum's test subject run around it.
When the subject crossed the finish line, 'merican Weapons CEO John Smith paused a stopwatch, announcing "Fifty-seven seconds!"
The General looked pleased"And this serum enhances the performance by one hundred per cent, you say?"
"Indeed!" Smiled Smith "We would have made it do more, but we didn't want to risk anyone's health or safety."
"Well, glad to know some business giants practice business ethics." smiled the General, standing up with a smile "I believe the President will be very pleased with you."
Smith bowed modestly "It's nothing, General. Anything for my country."
"How Noble!" came a mocking voice that sent chills down everyone's spines.
Eeryone looked to the roof of the building. A tall, armoured figure stood there, their face cloaked in shadow "Let ME make a contribution to America!"
The figure rose up into the sky on a strange, winged, flat machine and surged towards them...
Wait... thought the General I know that Glider...
Oh no...
"HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
...
I hope you enjoyed the fic! Also, Am I the only one who thinks Adora from She-ra would make an Excellent Green Lantern in her own Superhero AU?
I've been thinking. I know the Suit in the 'So, you're awesome girlfriend is a superhero' fic is stated to be red and blue, but should I change that? Let me know in the reviews! Also, any ideas on what Raine's Daredevil costume can look like? I was thinking yellow and red, or maybe just red with yellow lines. Any ideas?
Favourite and Review!
