Nadia Miniera, 13, District 12

Why do things happen? That question has begun to plague my mind more and more over the last few days, as the days run out, and as we get closer to the inevitable. If I can work out the answer to that question, then maybe I can work out why coal is unable to become a diamond.

My eyes move down to my little legs, carrying me as fast as they can across the gravel pathway with Seia just ahead, clambering up an escalating hill. They are coming… the careers. Well, three of them, I think I caught a glimpse of the boy from Four and the girl from One along with the girl from Nine as well. They have been hot on our trail for hours now and we've been managing to weave and hide in old shacks and houses before quickly making a break for it, whilst they weren't looking. As our luck had it, I had just finished the cure potion, seconds before we heard their voices through the window. So we ran again.

However, despite all this, the question still plagues my mind. Why do things happen? I've spent many years since the death of my family trying to work that question out. It's only now, while I'm running for my life, while the air expels desperately from my lungs and tears them until it feels like all the oxygen has been sucked out. Now I know what the ultimate question is that I've been searching for the answer to all these years. Now that I'm on death's door. It took me all this time but now I think I finally understand. Maybe it's the sight potion, something in it must have cleared my mind. Or maybe it's just my own intuition. I'm not sure anymore…

I spent all those years experimenting, studying, and trying to find answers to all those little queries I had, so that one day I might be able to piece together the answer to that big question. That's what I've been doing is it not? Why is my family dead? Why am I here in this hellscape… running for my life? Why is the life currently being sucked out of Seia and i'm not being allowed to save her? It's only now as I glance desperately behind me for our pursuers, that I've come to a realization…

"Nadia!" Seia calls from above me.

She is panting from atop the slope, sweating, her eyes are wide in exhaustion and fear. She is going pale. Deathly pale and her eyes are starting to look more… yellow.

"Hurry!" She yells.

I find myself paused below her, turning around again to the three shadowy figures at the end of the path.

What I realized is that maybe all these years I've been approaching that big question the wrong way. That's why I could find no answer after all this time of unconsciously searching. Why my mom and sister are gone? Why I'm here in the hunger games? Why can't coal become diamonds? Why can't I discover the answers to these questions? Because maybe there is no why…

Maybe why doesn't make sense as a question? It's just something we humans do to try to find reason in everything … but reason is only a human creation. "How" is the only question that makes sense to me anymore. It's the only question that the world will provide answers to. Or its the only question that my brain can comprehend? That's what I've been doing all these years, studying and inquiring and learning. I've been looking for the answers to hows, not whys. Science is my only path to doing that and science can answer those questions through my alchemy. Maybe one day, with some work, it will be able to answer the why's that we so desperately crave as well.

"Nadia come on!" Seia begs again from above me, impatiently.

For the first time since I've known her, she has genuine concern in her voice. When I first met her she came across as just some… misanthrope. I saw that word before in a dictionary once. It's someone that hates people but I don't think she is one deep down. Not anymore. Not after yesterday. I've been studying her closely since the day we met and I think there's a fun, kind girl hidden in there and I'd like to bring her out and in a way… I think Seia does too. Even if she doesn't realize it. How has she's come to be like this? I don't know but I can find a solution. I'm good at that. I may not have much time left either…

As I begin scrambling up the slope behind her, spending the last of my energy doing so, I'm taken back suddenly to a very different time…

It was the summer before that awful disease hit District 12. The summer before Katia died. She was running done a path much like the one I'm on at the moment, with the summer leaves blowing around us on the trees, colored with golden light. We were running but I was in front this time not behind, and we were smiling to the sunshine. I remember thinking then at eight years old, that this is all life was. That somehow it would last forever. Laughing with the people closest to you and just enjoying life together and we told ourselves that that's all that mattered.

"Girls, it's dinner time," my mom called, leaned against one of the wooden posts supporting our house.

I still remember her smile to this day under the setting sunlight.

But little did I know, on that late summer day, when the sun set, that it wouldn't rise in the same way for a long time. The darkness that came that winter never left me.

So, in my blackened state, I spent years trying to figure out how coal can become a diamond. After all the trauma and stress coal is put through, underneath the earth. There must be a way a diamond can emerge from that… surely?

I have to figure it out, I don't have long left. This path is running out, my energy is almost spent. I have to know the answer!

I make it to the top of the slope and Seia seizes me by the arms! Her eyes are wide with adrenaline and fear.

"Nadia snap out of it! We have to hurry!" She pants.

Her voice is beginning to crackle under the weight of the curse. It seems to taking its toll.

"How… how can coal become a diamond?" I mutter under my breath, staring down at her feet.

"What?" She blurts back.

My eyes move back to hers.

"Oh… I thought you might have an idea…"

"What's gotten into you? You're delirious," she exclaims, turning back to race on.

The sun is beginning to dip now below the trees, transforming the sky into a blood red hue. The path darkens around us but we make it through another shack, that has a front and back door leading back to the path, which cuts through it directly. We don't have time to raid the place or find somewhere to hide. The careers are right behind us!

No! I need more time! I haven't found the answer to the question yet! If there is one why this has all happened, it's so that I can find the answer to that question! The world owes me that!

However, the twilight path in front of us is suddenly intercepted by a girl… blond-haired, twirling a knife in her hand calmly. The girl from Five!

"Evening ladies," she greets, turning to face us.

Seia freezes dead in front of me, gasping and clenching her fists! No! This can't be it! I need more time!

I spin around in a last-ditch attempt to run the opposite way however someone else leaps out from the bushes… someone a whole lot larger!

He lands with a thud and pushes himself up, towering way above me. His eyes are glowing almost red in the new moonlight. My old enemy has come back to haunt me… Charon! How did he find me?

Is this it? How is coal ever supposed to become a diamond? Not with all these obstacles in the way. These obstacles are people. Seia is right. We are our own greatest enemy!

His empty eyes lock onto me from his gaunt face but they look different... While back on the train there was always something underhand going on beneath them, now they just look sunkenly tired, desperate, and almost tear-filled.

His ally's footsteps approach me from behind, so I turn back to her. In contrast to Charon, she appears stern, purpose-filled, and at this moment… capable of anything. She clenches her knife tight and strides forward with her eyes fixed on me!

"I believe you have something for us… Nadia," she scowls.

I step back with an inner gasp.

"What are you talking about?" I question.

"The potion," she responds, glancing down at my sachet around my shoulder.

"Nadia! Don't give it to them… please!" Seia pants.

"Shut it!" Heather hisses, before turning back to me.

"Look, none of this matters!" Seia interjects.

"Three tributes are headed this way right now and two of them are careers… they'll be here any second!"

"We don't have to outrun them… only you," the girl shoots back.

Then she takes a big step towards me with her knife pointed directly at me!

"Now… the potion!" She requests, her eyes lit up with determination.

Gritting her teeth, she sticks the blade up towards my neck causing me to recoil and simultaneously slip one of the potions into my hand from my sachet. The poison potion. Not the one she's looking for I don't think but she can have it!

"Stop!" Charon suddenly bellows from behind me.

I spin back to him. He is now facing down the direction of the careers, with his back to us, as the night draws in around. The blood-red moon has fully appeared in the sky behind him now, encircled by the twinkling stars.

After glancing up at the moon, he takes a deep breath and slowly turns back to us.

"Heather I'm… I'm sorry…" he mutters.

"There's been a slight change of plan…"

His words are slurred slightly while his eyes fall downwards to the ground.

"What?" Heather blurts back.

He calmly strides toward me causing me to instinctively jolt back but for some reason… I don't feel afraid of him. Well, not like I did on the train. His eyes are calm and bitter-sweet almost. He kneels down in front of me and places his hand gently on my shoulder, looking me dead in the eyes.

"You don't have to be scared now, I'm going to make things alright," he smiles before standing back up and facing down the path again with a new found purpose.

"Charon, what are you doing?" Heather pleads, her body becomes droopy and her knife sinks down.

"Take them and get out of here! That's my final wish," he answers sternly.

"Charon… no," she mutters.

"My compliments to you all… now for God's sake get out of here!" He yells, shooting his eyes back briefly.

He throws his shoulders back and begins pacing down the path to where the careers are, like a wild wolf.

"This is my moment," I hear him mutter.

After glancing back at Seia again, we slowly begin to plod back, leaving Heather just in front of us on her own. Her limbs have fallen low in defeat. My heart is filled with sudden… sorrow.

How can coal become a diamond? I think I finally know the answer… Charon Aytygin. Coal cannot become a diamond. Not on its own. Not without the people around us to help us, not just the people we love. The people I love are gone mostly… No, I mean just people in general. Strangers. Together if we help each other… if we work together… we can make diamonds out of all of us. I thought I had to shut myself away, that I had to grieve all alone, that… that was the only way to feel whole again but it's not true. It's together that we overcome obstacles because without each other what's the point?

So, with the help of Charon, we turn and run. Run again until we can no more. Run to fight another day. This time I'm ahead again. Ahead of Seia. While the night air rushes past our hair there is an unmistakable howl that echoes through the wind all around us.

AWOOOOOO

Charon Aytigin, 18, District 12

"Charon!" Heather's voice booms through the evening air from behind me.

I shift back to face her.

"Are you out of your mind?" She bellows, squeezing her fists tight and frowning.

She strides right up to me, almost purple in the face!

But I remain cold, fixated, unchanging. This monster inside of me is who I am, it always has been. The game makers were just able to figure that out and personify it. If I can just aim it at the right people though… yes I've finally figured out my purpose in all of this.

"Let's just talk about this… please," her voice trails into something more despairing than I've ever heard.

Her lips are now quivering and she's dragging her feet. Her eyes descend downwards.

My attention turns back to the blood moon radiating the night sky above us and then back to her.

"It's… it's too late for me now… this last transformation will finish me off," I swallow.

"And I just kind of figured… wouldn't it be kind of cool for me to do the right thing for once in my life?" I smile.

Her tear-stricken eyes move back up to face me again.

"Please… I don't want to be alone…not anymore," she begs.

My hand goes to her shoulder, rubbing it gently.

"You won't be," I reassure her, glancing back down the path.

"Try to protect Nadia… if it's the last thing you do… I owe it to her," I say.

She shakes her head.

"You got me all wrong… I'm just a killer. Nothing more."

"That's your father talking, not you. Don't be what he made you, you're more than that. I know it deep down… don't… don't make the same mistake that I did," I smile again.

She takes a deep breath, wiping the tears from her eyes and straightening her back.

Then it begins… my heart starts thudding again at a million miles an hour, being pumped full of an electrical current! Red mist descends across my eyes with each pump… my senses begin to sharpen into their wolf state. The sounds of the careers footsteps now fill my ears as their stench penetrates my nostrils. Cicadas and rustling leaves echo all around me in the background.

"Now… go," I murmur to her calmly.

"Go!"

She hesitantly begins to back away… back towards Nadia and Seia.

"See you on the other side… asswipe," I call to her.

"See you there… fucker," she calls back.

With that, we turn our separate ways. My vision narrows down on the dark path ahead and I begin charging faster and faster! My body starts to mutate for the last time! As my muscles and bones stretch and expand outwards, tearing through my shirt, I find it's not nearly as painful as the first time! For the first time in my life, I'm in control of my inner demon and we're thriving together!

I now zone into the small shack directly ahead, letting out a final howl from the bottom of my lungs!

AWOOOOO

Serenity Jasper, 16, District 9

"Hurry up Jade!" I call back to the blond career behind us.

A scowl immediately lines her face and her eyes pierce into me like she wants to throw her sword right through me. But there's nothing she can do about my new attitude. She knows it and I'm reveling in every second of it.

As my attention shifts to Taliesin beside me, his devilish eyes are glowing red under this new moonlight, his smirk infects me and I find myself grinning profusely. I never thought I'd get so much enjoyment out of degrading someone as prideful as Jade but, reducing her to a career being bossed about by a kid from District Nine is filling my veins with pleasure. I can't deny it.

I think I'm at last starting to understand why Taliesin gets such a kick out of all of this. It's the same reason I always got a thrill out of my endeavors back home. Yes, it pumps my heart with adrenaline but it's more than that… maybe it did give me pleasure to see the looks on others' faces when they lost everything. When their winning streak had run out and their game was over. What is life but a game? A game that we're all taking part in, that we're all competing in for others' enjoyment. Just like the hunger games. Why can't we get a bit of enjoyment out of it ourselves? Since we're the ones playing it. I know I'm going to enjoy watching Taliesin finally lose everything.

I think I finally know now what Taliesin was talking about… about the scarecrows…

AWOOOOOO

The howl of a… wolf. It shatters its way across the night. The thoughts bounding through my mind are immediately interrupted.

"That sounded like it was close," I say to Taliesin.

He just shrugs.

"We have them cornered… like mise in mousetraps. Let's push on," he insists.

He marches towards the wooden door of the shack and turns the handle however when he swings the door open we're met with the sight of some kind of beast… towering above us with its enormous frame! Taliesin freezes in shock in front of the heaving, snarling creature! Between its snout, its dagger teeth are clenched tight like a vice! Its fearsome eyes are glaring down at us! It looks like a wolf but is humanoid. A werewolf… just like the old tales I used to hear around The Dens, over a vodka shot and a game of cards. Taliesin remains motionless, shellshocked, his hand twitches frantically under his jacket to where he keeps his knives! This is the first time I've seen Taliesin actually seem… panicked in any way! He's been taken by complete surprise! We all have!

He begins slowly stepping backwards as the monster paces forwards! My hand goes instantly to my belt where my gun is strapped!

The voice of the mayor reverberates through my head.

"Three silver bullets."

But the gun is stuck! It's caught on my belt straps! I… I can't get it out! My frantic fiddling is doing nothing to help! Only making it worse!

Bearing its teeth… the creature winds up a wide swipe with its razor claws and Taliesin only just manages to roll under, to its left. However, it still slices some of the strands of his hair! Taking them with it!

My hand is now yanking at my gun.

"Come on!" I groan.

The creature's right ear then pricks towards me! It shifts its focus to me but Jade is fast to intercept! Swinging at its neck with her scimitar! It just manages to jolt its head out the way and the blade impacts the thick bones on the monster's shoulder causing it to howl in pain! In spite of that… now her blade is stuck!

I don't think I'll ever forget the desperation that suddenly floods Jade's eyes as she fails to pull the sword back out! The fear as she's staring wide-eyed into the face of death, what she must be going through rebounds into my lungs with force!

The tugging at my gun has slowed, I… what do I do?

The creature then seizes Jade by her throat! Crushing down on her neck! While its other claw clamps around her sword arm, rendering her helpless. It lifts her body up, squeezing down on her windpipe! All she can do is gasp in agony for air as her feet are taken off the ground! She goes from purple to white in a matter of moments! It only finally releases her neck to bite into it, sending a jet of blood everywhere! Splattering on the beast's face and drenching poor Jade. She's unable to even yell in agony.

With a tug, it rips her throat out and flings her through the air until she crashes into a tree, slumped in a puddle of gore!

BOOM

The panic in my heart finally allows me to go free. I close my eyes for a split second. My body begins to focus again with my mind. My hand follows suit and quickly whips out the gun!

WHACK

Before I can even think about pulling the trigger, the gun is swatted out of my hand as the wolf-beast brings its paw around! The impact also sends me spinning down face-first into the grass!

Dread is the next thing that hits me with the sight of my gun laying across from me on the grass and the creature's gigantic legs in between me and it! No! This can't be it! I have to keep going! I always do! No matter what tricky situation I've found myself in the past, no matter who I'm running from, no matter who I owe money to. I always get out. Every time! For my brother! So he doesn't grow up having to gamble in order to keep our family afloat… like me. If I survive the games, he'll never have to go to bed hungry again or not have running water!

It stares down at me, with its all too human, glowing eyes. Its fangs are now dripping with blood… Jade's blood. The dark liquid is oozing out of its jaw all over its timber-grey fur. Somehow, despite the grotesque sight, despite just tearing out my ally's throat, I can feel its… hesitation. What's going on? I assumed it was just another killing machine made by the game makers?

Taliesin suddenly reappears at its side! Slashing wildly with his knives, his teeth are gritted! Gosh, I'd never have thought I'd be so pleased to see him. However, it is quick to backhand him across the field with its knuckles…he hits the grass with a thud.

Though, the distraction gives me enough time to heave myself back towards my gun, using the tufts of grass to haul myself at it. Left hand then right hand. I'm almost on it now! Just a few inches more… I only need to reach for it now.

But I'm not fast enough… claws dig into my jacket! I'm lifted up by my arms with enormous strength just as my fingertips touch the edge of the gun!

"No!" I groan!

It hauls me up… right above its head, its eyes fixed on my neck, its blood-soaked tongue wiggling about like it can practically taste my blood already. The grip from its paws is so intense that they are beginning to crush my arms!

"Arghhhh!"

There is a flash before my eyes… it's my brother.

Harper is by my side again, his eyes are glimmering from the orange-glowing sunny fields of District Nine, swooshing behind him in the breeze.

It was his first day of school, so his cheeks were red. He was avoiding eye contact with me, keeping them down to the ground.

"Hey," I inquired, lifting his chin up gently with my hand.

"Don't be nervous… you're gonna crush this," I smiled.

"Besides… I'm always here for you, if anyone ever picks on you," I reassured him.

He returned a faint smile but then shook his head.

"It's not just that… I know that mom and dad spent the last of their money to finally get me into school and…"

"Harper!" I interject.

"Again… I'm always here for you," I reminded him, giving his hair a rub.

"I'll make the money for the family if I have to."

"No matter what happens… I'll find a way… I always do…"

I'll find a way… I'll find a way…

I'll find a way! I'm back facing down this monstrosity! With my arms pinned in the air, it moves its gaping jaw towards my throat but what it does not know is a new gush of air envelops my lungs! My entire body is stricken with a burst of energy. I'll find a way! I spring my knee back towards my chest and plant my heel directly into its lower jaw! The surprise attack seems to send it into a panic. It lifts me high into the air and slams me back into the grass, knocking the wind out of me! I groan and gasp for air, clutching my ribs. But I feel something digging into my back. My gun! I'm now lying on it!

Without a moment to lose my hand finds its way to the hilt of the gun, clasping it firmly. The monster howls again and raises its shining claws to bring them down swiftly on my neck. Simultaneously, I manage to yank the gun out from underneath my body, pointing up towards its chest… my finger taps the trigger.

BANG

My attacker's chest seems to explode from the inside as my silver bullet impacts its body! Blood and flesh jettison out in many directions including all over my face!

Its eyes plunge down in the moonlight to its gaping wound. It looks oddly… relieved. Its jaw hangs low before its limbs flop and it collapses down on the grass beside me.

Its eyes are now wide and empty while its pointed tongue lies strewn out on the grass, a river of blood now runs out of its mouth.

BOOM

Another boom… but this time a cannon? That can't have been a tribute? No! What did the game makers do to them? My eyes move one last time to the blood-stained, furry corpse lying next to me! It doesn't matter either way. I did what had to be done. I won that hand and I'll win the entire game. I have to. I'll find a way.

From the sight of the dead monster, I glance over to Jade's bloodied corpse, slumped against the tree. The two bangs shook the air but now what follows is silence. Except for the sound of cicadas from the trees around me. I'm left with the cicadas and the two corpses in the night.

Footsteps in the grass. Taliesin wanders over to me through the darkness, rubbing his now bruised head. I'd almost forgotten all about him. For the first time in the entire games…

"Not bad, poker girl," he grins, offering out his hand.

I clasp my hand around his and he yanks me up to my feet. As he releases my hand he stares down at the body of the beast.

"What a shot," he compliments.

"What a performance we're putting on…"

His slithering, pointed face is full of glee once again.

I nod, wiping the blood and gore from mine.

"Well… it looks like we won't be needing to kill her after all," he says, looking back at Jade's mangled body momentarily.

"Yeah…just us now…" I comment.

"Like it always should have been," he smiles.

It's not a smile that brings me much comfort but at least I feel we're on the same page for now. We both have the winning hand and so we're simultaneously each other's greatest obstacle. However, I know something now. Something I didn't think he wanted me to know. He doesn't do well with surprises much… I've found a chink in his armour, armour that seemed impenetrable before.

Kate Wakai, 18, District 4 - The Capitol

My hand slams down a second shot of vodka on the bar table, my entire mouth winces as my throat burns. My eyes move to my wrist to check my watch. Just gone Six. Definitely not too early.

Most of the bar is empty, except for the barman who raises his eyebrows when I slide my second shot across the top.

The chatter is low, so the voice of the announcer from the TV behind the bar echoes throughout.

"Everyone is still gob smacked by the Charon reveal two days ago. Clever work by our editors. Well, here is one of our lead scientists to explain how it was all done…"

"Sorry Severus," Marisol interrupts him.

"But we've just got word that Charon and Heather found Nadia and Seia. Something huge could be about to go down here!"

"They're preparing an ambush!" Severus beams, like an excited child.

I roll my eyes and push my way off the bar stool. After I've paid, I'm quickly back into the elevator so the noise of the games is drowned out by the closing door. My finger finds its way to the button to District Four's floor.

The District Eleven mentor hobbles in briefly and we exchange a nod before we hit my floor.

"DING!"

The corridor to our apartment is short so I'm quick to scan my finger on the door and push my way in.

I'm dazzled immediately by how bright it is inside! Glamour is seated at the end of the dining table, a big grin extended across her face as she drinks merrily with Rio.

What is the big occasion?

"Oh Kate," Glamour stands up, extending out her hand towards a young lady leaned against the kitchen top.

She has her back to me so her long, curly, wavy auburn hair being all I can see.

"This is Sevilla Floranna… our new District Four Chairman!"

The young woman turns around with a smirk plastered on her face and holding an oval glass of champagne. Her eyes stand out like a lighting strike, they are green but a stormy green. She can't be a lot older than me.

"Kate!" She smiles, offering out her hand.

I tentatively reach forward and shake it.

"I'm a big fan of yours… I especially love the way you fired that nail gun into the District One girl's eye…" she mentions casually, still smiling.

I slowly release her hand.

"I didn't know District Four had a seat on the committee," I say, turning back to Glamour and Rio.

"We do now! Hence… me," Sevilla gestures to herself.

"Right next to One and Two," she says, placing her hand playfully against her cheek.

My eyes squint in on her like an x-ray examining her.

"I've never heard of you… or your family," I question.

She shrugs with a shake of the head.

"I get that a lot… my family has preferred to keep a low profile…"

"I don't know. My family knows a lot of people…" I continue to press.

"Well… there are some things we all like to keep under wraps… isn't that right Kate Wakai," she says, raising her eyebrows.

The tension in the room has suddenly hit boiling point like someone activated a bomb beneath our feet. Glamour and Rio are frozen in silence, their eyes darting between us, waiting to see who will land the next blow.

"Anyway! We shouldn't keep you," Rio suddenly interjects.

I continue my stare down of her.

"Yeah. I gotta run," she says, flipping an apple from the counter into her palm and taking a bite out of it.

She doesn't speak like most people I've experienced who come from high standing backgrounds… she speaks almost as if she's trying to mimic it or… mock it. Like it's a big game for her.

"Ya know where my office is, if ya need anything," she exclaims, shooting her fingers out like guns and pointing them playfully.

I keep my eyes fixed on her the entire time, so she sends me a wink before kicking the door open behind her.

"What's gotten into you," Rio groans.

"Are you drunk?"

I push past him and head into my bedroom. I don't like this Sevilla Floranna one bit. If that even is her real name…

Ok so I wrote this a little while ago and it was the last one I stockpiled so who knows when the next one will be. Nadia is finally finding her place in all this, Charon went out in his blaze of glory and Serenity has made a few discoveries of her own other than the fact that one of the tributes was a werewolf and who is this mysterious new woman that has entered the District Four apartment? - Nautics.

Day 3

16th: Adelina Claire (D10F) Killed by Gargoyle mutts.

Day 4

0 deaths.

Day 5

0 deaths.

Day 6

15th: Jade Hastings (D1F) Killed by Charon Aytigin – Throat ripped out. Jade was a character created by me and Team-Shadow to act as a kind of side antagonist. So of course, she was never going to win or get that far and I thought she would be the best candidate for werewolf fodder. I hope she at least had an interesting arc with Marissa and the rest of the careers and a shame she got killed before she could divulge Taliesin's schemes or not for Taliesin. Thanks for the submission us!

14th: Charon Aytigin (D12M) Killed by Serenity Jasper – Shot in the chest. I loved Charon! He was so close to being irredeemable but not quite… and when I read that on his form I knew I had the perfect arc for him. I love a good sacrifice arc especially when it comes from an unexpected character. I tried to make it as gradual as possible since the games started until now, actually from the night before technically. Turning him into a werewolf as well as his relationship to Heather and Nadia really made him reassess who he was and it meant that Nadia, Seia and Heather could live on. Thanks for the submission RuneWhisperer!
