Part of the To Serve and Protect universe and a sequel to Chapter 17 (Kaede/Totosai, Investigator, Tawny).
"You're going to get me in trouble." Kagome adjusted her dress, silver satin hugging her curves, a slit clear up to her thigh.
One that her husband was currently taking advantage of, his fingers kneading her ass.
"He touched you," Sesshoumaru grumbled, his face buried against her neck.
"He's supposed to," she said. "That's part of the plan, remember? You can't keep pulling me away. He's going to notice—" The rest of her words were swallowed by his mouth on hers, Kagome helpless against his desperation.
She melted against him, fingers stroking the back of his neck. Forcing herself to pull back, she gave him a reassuring peck on the corner of his lips. "I'll be alright."
"Only your previous experience convinced me of that," he muttered, one hand splayed wide on her back. The low dip of her dress did not help matters when it was Hakudoshi's arm around her waist.
Naraku's lackey had wasted no time taking over his operations after the former mob boss had fallen under the weight of Kagome's evidence. The only reason she'd been given this assignment was due to the long recovery needed after the altercation with Naraku.
It had kept her out of the public's eye, neither Naraku nor Hakudoshi ever finding out who'd pulled the plug on their southern base. Kagome's family has been placed in witness protection, but after no inquiries had been made on the Higurashi name after a year, they'd all breathed a sigh of relief.
Sesshoumaru still hadn't forgiven himself for not checking her injuries more thoroughly, the images of her slumped over in a pool of blood still causing him to wake in a cold sweat. The fact that Kagome now lay next to him on a nightly basis helped, and he knew she didn't blame him for it, but he'd come so close to losing her.
Something he now dealt with every moment she was part of this deadly farce. If Hakudoshi found out she was a cop, let alone married to him, they'd never find her body.
Biting back a whimper, he returned his face to her hair, dragging in a ragged breath.
"I'm not the only one here," she said, trying to reassure him.
"I am aware." He would likely receive a stern reprimand from her captain when it was discovered he had his own people helping Kagome, but he didn't care.
His wife came first.
"I have to get back," she whispered. "He thinks I'm in the bathroom."
He painstakingly removed his hands from her person, fingers clenched into fists to keep from reaching for her again.
She cupped his jaw. "Soon."
"Not soon enough."
"I know." Moving towards the doorway, she pulled a small vial of perfume from her clutch, erasing all traces of him before disappearing back into the ballroom, her voice rising in timbre as she approached her target.
Sesshoumaru waited several minutes before following, ignoring the giggles and compliments paid to the enemy. He didn't dare look at her—he would not risk her safety—but the temptation was significant enough that he was forced to remove himself from the room altogether.
Once he was out of earshot, he placed a call to Kagura. The mission needed to end.
