Thank God I Found You (Mariah Carey)
My first wedding was beyond my control in every single conceivable way.
When I got married again, I knew that I needed to have a say, and because it was also Quinn's second wedding, I knew she'd want one too.
Thankfully, we were symbiotic.
Mami had wanted me to get married in a church this time, and I didn't just get any church; I found an affirming Catholic church.
Quinn didn't want to come down the aisle because she hated her father, but I did, and this time Papi refused to let anyone walk me down the aisle but him.
Benito begged to be the flower boy, and I would not rain on his parade.
The nerves that didn't come to me in my first wedding attacked me in my second as I paced the bridal suite while they played the wedding march for a second time.
My cue had come and gone twice, but I had cold feet.
There was a knock on the door, and Britt came in with a giant smile.
"Hey." I said as I reapplied the makeup I had painstakingly put on an hour before. My tears had wrecked what was supposed to be infallible.
"It's bad luck for my ex-wife to be in a room with me before the wedding." I said, and Britt rolled her eyes.
"Bullshit. You're finally freaking out."
"Is she out there?"
"Everyone is, including our very impatient son."
She rubbed her too-big belly, and it made me smile.
"How's is she?" I asked.
"Quinn is perfect. She's become best friends with the priest."
"Of course she did."
"Do you want to tell me why you're hiding in here instead of getting married?"
I put down my mascara and finally turned to look at Britt.
"Is this too fast?"
"You and I had a longer engagement; look how we ended up. I don't think the length of time matters."
"She loves me, right?"
"Yes."
"And you're okay with this, still?"
"I wouldn't be here, wearing a bra while I'm nine months pregnant if I didn't approve."
"Good point."
"Stop asking dumb questions and tell me what you're really afraid of."
"It's not her or the marriage…it's…stupid."
"Tell me."
"What if she gets tired of me like you did? What if she cheats? It wouldn't be the first time she stepped out in her life."
"Hey! I resent that. I did not get tired of you. You were hormonal and scary. I just needed to take the edge off."
I glared, and she rolled her eyes. "I shouldn't have married you; it ruined our friendship. I like being your friend way more than being your wife."
"What if she gets to that point?"
"She won't. I can feel it in my gut. She's your forever, and that's what scares you."
There was a bang on the door.
"Mami! Mama! Let's go!" Benito yelled. "I want cake!"
"You heard the kid, let's go…because I also really want cake. Don't make me wait too long, or I swear I will go into labor and ruin your day."
"You wouldn't dare!"
"Try me. I only promise to hold the baby in if you stop making me wait." Britt winked, "I'll tell them you broke a nail; that should buy you ten minutes; after that, I'm going to get Juni to pick you up and drag you down the aisle…chop, chop." Britt clapped at me and left me alone with what was left of my panic.
My phone buzzed.
Honey, I miss you. So does this guy!-Quinn
She sent a picture of her and the priest making a sad face, and I burst out laughing.
What the hell was I so afraid of?
I loved her.
Unequivocally.
For our reception, we changed into flawless cocktail dresses and did all the cliché things, like when she smashed cake into my face and I took her garter off with my teeth in front of our families.
And even though she said she wouldn't, the night ended with Britt's water breaking in the middle of the dance floor.
Her boyfriend ushered her to the hospital, and they promised to call with the news, but Britt insisted that we party it up for her.
Benito was a little jumping bean as he held onto our hands most of the night.
We'd chosen really good songs, but my son was over it.
"Benito!" He screamed at me.
"Huh?" Quinn mumbled.
"He wants Bad Bunny." I said, so Quinn picked him up and carried him to the DJ, where my son gave his request.
The party came alive, and we danced until it was time to leave.
I was tucking Benito into bed when we finally go the call.
"She's here." Britt whispered into the phone.
"Oh yeah? How is she?" I said, and she chuckled.
"Perfect in every way. I can't wait for Benny to meet her. Can you bring him in the morning?"
"Yes." Britt was smiling with fat tears in her eyes. "Are you crying?"
"Yeah. God knew I was sad to see my wife marry someone else, so he gave me something else to focus on. I'm so happy."
"I remember that feeling. It's the best. Isn't it?"
"Yes, I feel complete. I have one of each. What about you? Are you happy?"
"I've never felt this happy, B, not just for me, but also for you."
She sighed and smiled as she cradled a little bundle against her chest.
"I feel the same way."
"Rest while you can, B."
"Where's Q?"
"Passed out."
"Let me see."
I pointed the camera towards my wife, who was naked except for a sheet, snoring into my pillow.
"She's flawless, isn't she?" I said, beaming into the phone.
"She is."
"Hey, I love you, B."
"I love you too! Come in the morning before you leave for your honeymoon, promise me."
"I promise."
"Good."
Britt had stars in her eyes as she held her daughter the next morning.
Quinn rushed to be the first to hold her while I had to talk Benito into excepting that he wasn't the only baby in his Mama's life anymore.
He was not happy, but then he saw little Diana and changed his mind.
"Oh my gosh, oh my gosh!" He squealed as he sat next to B, and she helped him hold the baby. "Is she mines?"
"Yes." Britt said.
"I can't believe she is going with the name you chose."
"Me either.
"Diana is a beautiful name." I said, and Quinn shrugged.
"I still think it would be better spelled my way with two Ns."
"Yes, but she wanted to include the Ana from my name."
Britt's parents showed up soon after us and insisted on keeping Benito while Britt was in the hospital, and as much as I loved them, I had already promised that my parents could have him for the night.
I could see their sadness and Britt wanting to protest, but this was how it was.
Custody of Benito was mine, and while I wanted him to still be close to Britt's family, I wasn't going to break my word just because the Pierce family is as fickle as the wind.
"Please?" Britt asked me just before we left, and then she gave me those giant puppy dog eyes, and I nearly buckled.
"Tomorrow. Today, let your parents enjoy their newest little love."
Britt nodded, even through her tears.
I could tell by looking at Q that she agreed with Britt, but I wouldn't let anyone bully me.
My parents asked first, end of story.
Quinn seemed annoyed, and then I pressed my hand between her legs as she drove. She glared at me. "Santana, Benito is asleep right behind you."
"He can't see what I'm doing. Besides, I'm not stripping you down. I'm just trying to help my wife to fix her face."
At the word wife, Quinn brightened up.
"Wife. I like the sound of that."
"Good, because I like it when it refers to you."
"Speaking of being your wife, you weren't putting your foot down about not leaving Benito on my account, were you?"
"No."
"Then why?"
"My parents asked for him tonight since they are heading back to Lima tomorrow night. Britt's parents plan to stay at her place for another two weeks to help with the baby, so they'll have plenty of time with him."
"Oh, okay. Good."
"What's with you, Q?"
"Britt got in my head."
I groaned. "Of course she did. What did she say?"
"Just that you're a control freak who has both sides of a conversation in your head."
"She's not wrong, but that doesn't really apply to you."
"It doesn't?"
"With her, I had to think for both of us because she's Brittany. She's a giant toddler most days. I can say with the utmost certainty that you are nothing like a toddler."
"Is that your way of acknowledging that I'm smarter than you?"
"Papi once told Juni and me that if we married someone smarter than ourselves, it wouldn't be the worst thing if we gave into it. I ended up being the smarter one in my last relationship, and I know how frustrating that can be, so I promise that as the dumber one, I'll take your opinion into consideration, knowing that you've probably analyzed things from fifteen different angles."
I loved watching Quinn blush, and I swore I would keep making that happen for as long as I had breath in my body.
We dropped Benito off at my parent's hotel room with instructions for them to take Benito to see Britt and her parents the next day.
And then, we got an airport shuttle and set off on the most epic honeymoon.
