AN1: Fairy Tail 100 Year quest 109 was released May 31/22 and YES it does show the canon explanation of what Laxus Dragon Lacrima is. My story and explanation were released like over a year before that so obvious I had no idea. Naruto's teacher will not be that Thunder Dragon King so Laxus and his Lightning Dragon Slayer magic will not be connected to that Dragon King. (Although I will point out that God Serena ALSO has a Lightning dragon Lacrima. Just saying.
Yes I know the AN has born reposted but I know people will claim I intentionally changing canon to make Naruto 'special' hence why I will just repost the top one for awhile (so people can see I am explaining a plot point).
Fairy Tail 100 Year quest 115 was released. It showed that God Serena survived and the last three of his Dragon Lacrima-Diamond(stone), Flash(Light), dark (unnamed) along with his established other 5-Lightning (thunder), Cavern (Earth), Purgatory (Fire), Sea King (Water), Gale (wind).
For context in this story God Serena will have refined organ (heart) of the Lightning Dragon King (like Laxus did have in canon) and scales/bones from the other Dragons. Hence his Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic will be in general more effective then Laxus but less than Naruto's (as Serena will have a refined organ rather then just some leftover scales enchanted.) And just because Serena and Kirin (the 5th dragon slayer) have their magic from the "Lightning Dragon King" does not mean that Naruto own (through first generation) Lightning Dragon Slayer magic is inferior (a dragon does not need to be king to be strong after all).
RIP I know like 3.5 months since I updated this story (July, August, September) despite being my favorite of the ones I write… I kinda wrote myself into a corner with the race as I kept thinking which path to take for the race before I finally decided. Yeah sorry I know the ending will NOT be what people will be expecting but hey my story.
Chapter 51 The Unexpected Race
For the next few days Wendy could say were the happiest in her life. Everyone in the guild were very nice to her and despite her worries nobody looked down at her for being younger then almost everyone else in the guild. It also helped anyone who acted even slightly annoying (at least in his mind) to her was subtly threatened by an overprotective Naruto much to her embarrassment.
'This is so nice…. I haven't been this happy since Sensei…' Wendy thought before her face turned red when she thought of the private lessons with her sensei which she enjoyed way more then she could ever admit.
"Wendy-chan? Are you alright?" Lucy asked worried as she looked at the younger girl with eyes full of worry.
"Nothing! I was just thinking about how nice everyone is here!" Wendy squeaked shaking her head.
Gray and Erza shared an uncertain look while Natsu just grinned. Naruto bent down to put his forehead against hers as he closed his eyes.
"Hmm… You don't seem to have a fever… Although your heart rate just sped up." Naruto noted as he listened to her heartrate with his enhanced listening. AN2:
"Sensei!" Wendy squeaked as her face turned scarlet at the close contact.
Across the bar Mira's eye twitched but she just sighed as she assumed it was just a schoolgirl crush as Naruto did fit the ideal boyfriend status in many girls' eyes.
'If only he knew how many girls would want YOU to be modelling.' Mira thought drily as she was well aware how many guys loved her photoshoots but slowly but surely Naruto was having a female fanbase based on the Sorcerer Weekly articles.
'Good thing Wendy is so little or Mira-Nee might go ballistic if Naruto-Nii showed that kind of affection or at least attention to anyone else.' Lisanna thought drily as she kept a careful eye out on her older sister.
Gray and Natsu shared grins at their younger teammates getting pampered by the blonde. Carla sighed when Wendy looked ready to pass out. Erza and Lucy smiled as the little girl looked rather adorable in their opinion.
"Maybe she is just nervous?" Erza suggested with a kind smile as Naruto backed away with a thoughtful expression.
Wendy took several breathes as her face returned back to normal although Lucy did see her eyes shifted to disappointment briefly.
"You might be right Erza. Wendy-chan just remember you can rely on me or anyone at Fairy Tail for anything always." Naruto assured her warmly as he patted her on the forehead.
Wendy pouted but did not make Naruto take his hand off making him chuckle.
"Hai I understand." Wendy said softly.
"Why don't we go on a job? It feels like ages since we went as a group on a job?" Natsu whined as he crossed his arms.
Erza smacked him on the head as he grunted holding his head in mild pain.
"Don't be rude. Wendy and Kinana have just moved into their new homes. We of course would let them take time before we start our new routines." Erza scolded him as she put her hands on her hips.
"Yeah Natsu. Don't forget that Wendy is part of our team now so we not going to exclude her from jobs and just go with the rest of the team." Lucy reminded him as Natsu rubbed his cheek.
"I guess. Sorry Wendy. We don't need to rush." Natsu told her.
"That's okay. Thank you for understanding Natsu-san." Wendy told him as she gave a polite bow.
Gray decided he had to take one final dig at Natsu while he could.
"Plus Natsu. Unless you are literally scraping by I think you have at least some jewels in storage right?" Gray teased as Natsu glared at him.
Erza sighed and coughed as the boys shuddered and instantly clammed down.
'I am glad Wendy-chan is adjusting. Its hard to be in a place after all.' Naruto thought happily before his thoughts turned to a certain Fairy.
'I had Mavis after all. If it wasn't for her… Then I…' Naruto thought as he felt a stab of gratitude to his first friend in Earthland and person he felt he owed most to.
A voice appeared in his mind of something from his past.
"Why protect that thing behind her? Perhaps pity of the fate she has had to endure? She is naught but a form of magic power at this point?" A deep voice asked amused. AN3:
"She isn't a source of magic power!" Naruto shouted angrily as his form was covered in yellow chakra.
"If anything, she is the only thing in this world that truly matters to me!" Naruto declared as he stood in front of Mavis with his arm in front as if he just deflected an attack.
'Not anymore of course but back then she might've been the only thing in this world that I would gladly put my life on the line to protect.' Naruto mused with a slight smile as he looked off in the distance.
Meanwhile on Tenrou Island
"Did Naruto talk about me?" Mavis asked a rabbit who tilted her head in confusion.
"I swear I sneezed and that usually happens when someone you care about talks about you right?" Mavis asked the same rabbit who just blinked.
"Gosh! I am speaking fast? I think I am talking fast? Its just hard to not when he is talking about me." Mavis noted in rapid tones as she started to pace.
'My heart rate is through the roof! I mean I am just a thought Projection so its not like its going to hurt me or anything but this feeling… Its so intense and pure.' Mavis thought to herself as she placed a hand over her chest.
'Is this what true love feels like?' Mavis thought hopefully before she turned scarlet red.
"I swear if Yuri or Zera saw me now they wouldn't stop teasing me! They would call me a schoolgirl in love rather then the wise master of Fairy Tail!" Mavis noted as she smiled with a blush on her face.
"Let's meet soon Naruto and say safe." Mavis shouted as the animals around her just did their routine.
'My beloved.' Mavis added to herself. AN4:
Back to Fairy Tail Guild Hall
"Phew one last person who is trying to steal my beloved Gray-sama." Juvia whispered from behind a pillar. She had more or less accepted Naruto would probably not steal her Gray and with Wendy age there was almost no chances.
'I mean if Naruto-san takes all the girls for himself or at least distracts them then Gray-sama will focus only on me.' Juvia thought deviously as she had no romantic feelings towards Naruto despite noticing several girls seemingly to be attracted to him.
'Not that I wish him harm of course. He is one of Juvia's guild mates and he is rather nice to everyone.' Juvia added to herself. AN5:
Gray shuddered although he wasn't sure why being an ice wizard and immune to cold weather.
Erza turned to Naruto who walked over to his fellow S-class wizard.
"Naruto there is something I wish to ask you about those swords." Erza stated as the guild stopped their conversations to look over their way.
"Hmm? Oh, you mean them." Naruto noted as he waved his hand with a slight electric charge and blue breeze appearing around his hand.
Near instantly two swords appeared on his hip.
"More swords?" Lisanna noted with interest as she took in the appearances on the two swords.
"Yeah they are like crazy strong!" Lucy noted as she nodded her head.
"Hehe. The right one name is Tessaiga and the left one is Tensaiga." Naruto introduced as he grabbed the swords within their sheathes and put them into each hand.
Carla decided to have her opinion heard as she flew into the air and looked down at Naruto skeptically.
"You named your blades? Isn't that abit redundant?" She asked crossing her small arms.
Naruto frowned and shook his head.
"No. I didn't name them. These are their names." Naruto said firmly.
Wakaba and Macao shared a dry laugh.
"But seriously Tessaiga (Iron-Crushing Fang) and Tensaiga (Heavenly Rebirth Fang) are kinda stupid names." Wakaba claimed.
All the sudden blades of wind flew from Tessaiga shelthed blades at Wakaba and shards of Lightning flew from Tensaiga sheathed blades at Macao much to their horror.
Before anyone could react, Naruto jumped in front of them with wind in his right hand and Lightning in his left and cancelled out the attacks by batting them with his hands.
"Enough! Calm down!" Naruto shouted as his face grew serious as he stared firmly at his blades.
The blades appeared to pulsate for a moment before they lost their glow seemingly at Naruto's tone.
Naruto turned to Macao and Wakaba with an annoyed stare before he sighed.
"Please don't insult them. They are very proud fangs from dragons." Naruto informed them as he placed his hands on the swords guards for a moment before releasing them.
"Yup no need to remind us twice." Macao noted with a fake smile as he started to sweat.
Makarov decided to join in the conversation.
"Fangs from dragons?" He asked with a curious expression.
Naruto nodded as he patted the swords which sent warm magic appearing to be pleased.
"Yeah. From a lightning dragon and Sky Dragon. You can probably tell which sword has which blade has which." Naruto pointed out as Tessaiga sent a ring of wind and Tenseiga sent a ring of electricity to prove his point for a moment.
"So in a way they are like Dragon Lacrima correct?" Makarov suggested but instantly regretted when Naruto eyes narrowed.
The guild stepped back a few feet when Naruto eyes flashed from sky blue with a mini hurricane surrounding him and lightning blue as small arcs of electricity surrounding the hurricane.
"Master. Do not degrade my beloved swords to those things you call Dragon lacrima. My swords are nothing like those artificial hunks of Dragon Slayer magic." Naruto said coldly as his swords vibrated as if agreeing with him.
"Despite their owners being long dead my sword still retain the pride of the Lightning and Sky Dragon who offered their fangs long ago. They are nothing like Dragon lacrima which are nothing besides enchanted bones, scales or organs from Dragons." Naruto claimed as he took several deep breaths to calm down as his magic slowly rescinded. AN6:
"Organs?" Natsu asked with notable disgust.
"Yup. My Teacher told me in theory its possible to take organs from recently dead dragons and refine them into Dragon Lacrima. In theory they are more effective at channeling magic power then if you use scales or bones but its really up to the user on how well the magic works." Naruto added with a notable scoff at the end.
The guild looked uneasy at the idea of how Dragon Lacrima was created with Wendy having slight tears and Gajeel gripping his fist in anger.
After a few awkward minutes Wendy had something on her mind she wanted to ask.
Wendy opened her mouth but Naruto raised a hand up.
"I know what you are going to ask. These fangs are not from my teacher or Wendy-chan's mother. They are from different dragons." Naruto revealed before he looked amused at Natsu.
"Despite what Natsu might believe there is more then one dragon of an element. Igneel might have the king of Fire dragons but not the only one." Naruto pointed out.
'My teacher was not the 'king' of Lightning Dragons but he implied he could have been if he tried.' Naruto noted silently.
"That does make sense. Also guys don't try to pick them up. They are enchanted or something." Erza noted as Naruto smirked.
"More like they are picky with their wielders. They were from proud dragons after all. They might not have their hearts but they are not pieces of enchanted Dragon flesh like Dragon Lacrima are." Naruto insisted.
"Here let me show you." Naruto stated as Tenseiga returned to his hip while he put Tessaiga out in his hand and offered the sheathed blade out.
"Master please hold onto Tessaiga." Naruto asked brightly as Makarov looked amused but nodded.
Makarov grabbed the guard and as soon as Naruto let go Makarov comically was sent crashing into the floor with him being surprised.
Makarov angrily tried to pick up the sword with both hands but it stubbornly stayed on the floor no matter how much Makarov tugged on it.
"Master put some elbow grease into it! That blade can't weigh that much!" Cana chanted with drink in hand.
"That's it!" Makarov roared as his eyes glowed, he soon turned into a giant and started to pull. Despite his massive size and strength, the blade stayed flat on the earth and did not budge.
The guild was shocked while Naruto just smirked.
"Wow not even master can lift the sword let alone wield it. It must find Naruto-kun special huh?" Mira pointed out with an impressed look.
After a few minutes Makarov gave up with a sigh as he returned to normal size.
Naruto whistled as he picked up the sword effortlessly and spun it around before he pointed the sheathed blade at Makarov.
"The simple answer is 'you are not worthy'." Naruto noted with a bold smirk.
"According to the blade at least." Naruto admitted sheepishly as both swords glowed before they vanished.
Cana gave him a dry look as she put her hands on her hips which also caused her breasts to bounce to the pleasure of the majority of the guild. Gray looked away with a blush while Juvia glared heatedly at her 'rival'.
"Okay please settle this. Who decides who is 'worthy'?" Cana asked him.
"The swords." Naruto replied back easily with a grin.
"So, are those swords alive or something or is there some trick to wielding them?" Cana challenged him as Naruto sweatdropped.
"No. they are not alive like you or me. They are just picky on who actually wields them." Naruto clarified.
'Is it because he uses the same kind of Dragon Slayer magic as the swords.' Erza wondered but decided to not bring it up.
Gajeel gave a bloodthristing smirk.
"I wonder how those blades would taste?" Gajeel crackled as most members looked rather uncomfortable at the notion.
The swords returned along and glowed as if offended at Gajeel words.
Naruto scoffed and starred at Gajeel.
"I will promise you if you tried that you would either be cut to 1000 pieces or shocked to a crisp. You think them making it impossible to lift them is bad. They will attack people who try to harm them." Naruto warned with a dark smile.
Gajeel shuddered and stepped aside.
'Okay I forgot how dangerous blondie is. He makes Ivan and Jose look like puppies compared to him.' Gajeel thought with a shudder. Part of his secret mission with Makarov was to infiltrate the 'Anti Fairy Tail' guild Raven Tail as a spy. Ivan thought Gajeel was spying on Makarov for him while it was really the other way around.
Luckily Raven Tail unlike Phantom Lord was not interested in doing a flashy war especially as they were still classified as a Dark Guild. They also thought Naruto's strength were just rumours and exaggerated. It helped that Gajeel acted like he resented Naruto being the main reason 'his' guild Phantom Lord lost the war. Gajeel really sold the ideal to Ivan that Naruto brief hot streak was just due consuming the Jupiter Blast which Ivan eagerly ate up.
"Gajeel-kun. Please try to be nice." Juvia chided her fellow former Phantom Lord member with a notable sigh.
Gajeel rolled his eyes and avoided looking at Naruto who smirked at Iron Dragon Slayer.
"Tell you what? If you can lift either sword you can use it. No strings attached." Naruto suggested as the guild focused on the blond with various looks of surprise. AN7:
"If master couldn't lift them…" Mira added with a frown.
"I guess anyone who could lift them would be more worthy then master." Naruto joked as the old man huffed.
"You are not joking?" Gray asked skeptically crossing his arms as his shirt mysteriously disappeared again much to Juvia joy with her eyes like hearts.
"Nope. If anyone can lift them you can use them." Naruto promised as he took the swords out of the sheathes and stabbed them lightly into the ground just an inch into the ground.
To anyone eyes it would seem it would only take a single pull to drag them out of the ground but Naruto and the guild members who went on Alliance meeting knew better.
"You will regret this blondie! Come here!" Gajeel shouted as he leaped forward towards the sword.
He went towards Tenseigan since in the normal state it looked superior to its Wind Counterpart. Gajeel put both of hands onto Tenseigan handle and pulled expecting it to easily be pulled out. Much to his and most of the guild's surprise the blade stayed in the ground as if it was stuck inside.
Gajeel growled as he put all his strength and pulled back the blade but it stayed stuck inside with no signs it was getting loose. Gajeel spent several minutes trying to pull it and comically failing.
"What is this?!" Gajeel shouted angrily as he started to pant from the effort.
Naruto shrugged his shoulders and winked tilting his head at the blade.
"Screw this! If I can't pull it out then I will simply eat it!" Gajeel declared in frustration.
Before anyone could stop him, he opened his moth wide and chomped onto the handle. The instant his teeth touched the handle the entire sword became electrified and shocked Gajeel. Gajeel let go with his eyes wide as he was shocked. To add salt to injury the other blade seemed to be annoyed as it sent a wave of wind which caught Gajeel off guard. It sent him flying across the guild and he got knocked out when the wind slammed into the ground leaving a small Gajeel sized crater into the ground.
"Anyone else want to try?" Naruto asked rhetorically. The guild rapidly shook their head as Naruto chuckled and easily pulled the swords out and put them back into their respective sheathes.
Lucy went up to him crossing her arms over her impressive chest.
"You knew nobody could pull them out right? You weren't worried?" Lucy accused as Naruto smiled.
"I mean there is always a chance other people could be worthy but its up to the swords themselves." Naruto commented as he waved his hand. Both swords disappeared again and returned to Tenrou Island.
'No point of keeping them on me and not use them. I think they would rather be unused and at peace on Tenrou Island then on me but never used.' Naruto thought.
"Is there any form of magic you can't use?" Laki asked drily as Naruto tilted his head.
'Cute!' Mira thought as her eyes shone.
"Hmm. I wouldn't call myself some sort of King of magic or anything but I do think having alternate forms of magic is more useful then just having one or two." Naruto remarked.
'I don't just copy magic after all. I learn it fair and square like everyone else.' Naruto thought proudly.
'Better then you were the brat who could only spam Shadow clones and Rasengans in your youth.' Kurama teased with a wide grin as Naruto mentally eye twitched.
'That same brat managed to defeat you while you had half your chakra and still the mightiest of us.' Gyuki reminded the bigger tailed beast.
Kurama growled as he swung one of his tails sending a shockwave at the 8 tails who laughed before catching the breeze with a single hand.
Naruto tuned out the tailed beasts inside of him as he lazily flicked his hand. The glass beer mug stopped in mid air as it zoomed at his face while he was somewhat occupied. It appeared in his few moments thinking to the tailed beasts the guild had devolved again into a rowdy guild again.
"Well, I guess its never a bad time to start a brawl in the guild." Naruto said lazily as he sat down and the mug flew back to the bar unshattered.
Lucy and Wendy sat next to him as Lucy sweatdropped and Wendy looked worried.
"Aren't you going to stop this Sensei?" Wendy squeaked as Naruto merely raised an eyebrow.
"Try to not make too much a mess. It will make Kinana-chan job harder later on." Is all Naruto said as he yawned largely ignoring the guild fighting each other.
"You get used to it Wendy-chan." Lucy tried to assure her as Wendy squeaked.
"Watch out Lucy-san!" Wendy shouted as Lucy turned only to see Natsu flying at her with his fist on fire.
"Get out of the way Lucy! This is for Naruto!" Natsu shouted as he had lost track of his trajectory and aimed at Lucy instead of Naruto by mistake.
"Natsu! Eep!" Lucy screamed as she put her hands in front of her face expecting an impact.
"Sigh." Naruto sighed as he casually grabbed Natsu in mid air by the wrist preventing him from hitting Lucy.
"Here fight Gray." Naruto said flatly as he swung around and threw Natsu back into the crowd of people.
Elfman was currently fighting 'like a man' Macao and Wakaba at the same time with his massive fists. Gray was trying to do a sneak attack on Elfman from behind but then it was ruined by Natsu slamming into him.
"You idiot! You messed up my sneak attack!" Gray shouted as he butted heads with Natsu.
"Well it wasn't much a sneak attack! I could have blocked it with my eyes gouged out!" Natsu claimed as they started to brawl.
"Is this what normal really is in this so-called guild?!" Carla demanded as she floated next to Wendy.
"Pretty much. We are a spirited guild after all." Lucy and Naruto answered at the same time.
"Plus, you don't see Erza complaining." Naruto pointed out as Erza was sitting at a table by herself along with Mira who handed her a slice of strawberry cake.
"Not a great example. Erza-san literally forgets the world when she is eating cake." Lucy reminded him as Naruto gave a small chuckle but didn't dispute it.
"Don't worry about it. I won't let anything happen to either of you." Naruto stated absentmindly as Lucy turned away a light blush on her cheeks.
'Stupid oblivious Baka. How can he say something to a maiden and not bat an eye!' Lucy silently fumed as once again her heart was beating out of her chest.
Wendy turned red as Naruto chuckled at her cute expression while Carla glared at him.
Naruto just stretched not seeing his teammates blushes or Miras glare.
Makarov groaned before he tapped Naruto on the shoulder.
"Please make them settle down. I have an announcement to the guild." Makarov asked as Naruto nodded.
"Of course, Master." Naruto replied as he pointed his finger into the middle of the guildhall.
Naruto sent a blue blast of Lightning Dragon Slayer magic into the air which exploded casing a burst of light and mini sonic boom to erupt.
Instantly everyone covered their eyes besides Naruto and when the flash was over, they turned to Naruto. Naruto shrugged his shoulders as he pointed to Makarov who coughed.
"You brats! I have something I need to say to you all! So, listen up!" Makarov shouted as the guild settled down and separated ignoring the bruises and bumps from their little spat.
'Should I heal everyone? Those wounds look shallow so I should have enough magic power to at least cover the pain.' Wendy thought as she glanced at Naruto.
As if he could read her mind, he shook his head and put a finger as a form of silence.
"Tomorrow is a special day! It is the yearly 24-hour race!" Makarov shouted as the guild was silent for a moment.
"Oh crap! It's already been a year?" Macao whined.
"Yes! Time to shine again!" Jet shouted with a smirk.
"You wish! I am getting number one this year!" Natsu claimed as Happy rolled his eyes.
Naruto, Wendy, Carla, Lucy, Gajeel, Juvia and Carla looked confused.
"24-hour race?" Naruto asked the unspoken question.
Before Makarov could explain Mira already walked over with an attractive swing to her wide hips. She sat down in front of Naruto leaning forward so her abundant cleavage could be easily visible in her red dress. She smiled happily when Naruto eyes lingered on her breasts making Erza and Lucy frown behind her.
"Let me explain Naruto-kun. Once a year at this time the guild has a race to a location and back which takes the average wizard about 24 hours to complete. Whoever comes in last has to suffer a punishment game selected by Master himself. All wizards have to compete except for Lisanna and Kinana-chan. As they are more staff to the guild rather then active wizards." Mira explained calmly. AN8:
"That's right! We must keep ourselves diligent and assess ourselves each year to make sure our wizards are still the top in Fiore!" Makarov announced as the guild shouted in cheer.
"Now rest up as tomorrow will be the race of your lives! Whoever loses shall have one hell of a punishment. I cannot wait to give it out!" Makarov claimed with a huge grin.
"Master? Why is there a punishment anyways? Most of us work in teams so this kind of test would encourage sabotaging each other to get ahead." Naruto asked.
The guild was silent as this never occurred to any of them.
"Good night! Rest up my children!" Makarov stated as he quickly ran into his office and slammed the door shut.
'He totally avoided the point of this race. Is it so he can punish the last person without seeming to be biased on mean.' Naruto thought flatly.
"Time to show what a real man can do!" Elfman claimed as Mira smiled at her brothers enthusiasm.
"Levy! You can watch me win the race right?" Jet asked Levy excitedly who smiled politely.
"I will be more watching out to not be last but sure." Levy replied rather flatly.
Lucy turned to Erza with a questioning look.
"Jet seems rather confidant. Is he really that good?" Lucy asked Erza who shrugged.
"Jet speciality is speed magic which boosts his running speed dozens of times for short periods of time. So yeah, he has won the last couple of times by outrunning everyone." Erza noted.
Lucy eyes widened at the wizard she considered rather ordinary at least compared to the majority of the guilds varied wizards.
"But to be honest running is all Jet can do. If you give him a solid hit while he isn't looking, he will go down for sure." Mira noted with a smirk.
"Mira-chan! How can you be so rude?" Jet whined.
"Well, she isn't wrong. The force of his punches aren't anything to brag about either. I didn't even feel it last time he ran past me in the race." Erza claimed as Jet head dropped even more. AN9:
"Levy! Please correct them! You know I am strong too, right?" Jet whined to his teammate.
Levy looked down at him with an emotionless expression before turning away much to his horror.
"Good luck Lu-chan! Wendy-chan! Gajeel-san. Juvia! And Naruto-san! Try to not come in last place!" Levy shouted as Lucy and Naruto waved to her back in greeting.
Juvia nodded whole Gajeel looked away but with the most tiny smile on his gruff face.
As people started to leave the guild hall to return to their homes or do various last minute training Naruto turned to Makarov with a smirk.
"So, what's the objective to the race?" Naruto asked cheerfully.
"Go to Mount Ivor, grab a Wyven scale and come back. Anyone who doesn't grab a scale and come back in 24 hour loses and whoever comes in last with a scale loses the race." Makarov explained raising an eyebrow when Naruto smirk grew.
"And is there any restrictions on how we race?" Naruto asked whistling as Makarov frowned.
"Normally no but this year I will be adding a no flying rule as people have complained it makes very unfair height difference." Makarov admitted as Naruto nodded.
"Alright! See you tomorrow master!" Naruto shouted as he raised an arm in greeting as he started to walk away.
"Do you plan to do something Naruto?" Makarov asked wearily.
Naruto stopped with his back to Makarov.
"Just remember not to change the rules afterwards Master. It wouldn't be fair to change the game after it ends." Naruto stated ominously as he walked away leaving Makarov sighing.
"I forget sometime no matter how mature he is, Naruto is still a brat at the end of the day. Oh well. I suppose there is no harm, right? What's the worst that can happen if I let Naruto Uzumaki do what he wishes?" Makarov asked himself with a chuckle.
The next day
The more or less 100 members of Fairy Tail were lined up at the racing line while Lisanna and Kinana stood next to Makarov side.
"Man, I haven't seen everyone here gathered here in years." Gray remarked as he had Juvia trailing a few feet away from him.
'Should Juvia win to impress Gray-sama? Of course not! I could never beat Gray-sama! I got it! I shall make sure to be behind Gray-sama and make sure we are not the losers of the race!' Juvia thought to her self in a desperate monologue.
"That's right. Besides Gildartz, Mystogan and Him I believe everyone has gathered here today." Erza remarked as she briefly glanced at Freed, Bickslow, and Evergreen who were in the line but with a notable nervous expression.
Erza had requipped into a 'runners' outfit which happened to be a rather small red tank top (that exposed a fairly decent amount of her abundant cleavage), yellow short shorts exposing her long legs, a red and white cap, black sunglasses and white running shoes.
Several members almost whistled at the attractive red headed S-class wizard but several swords had hovered around her head as well making them back off sheepishly.
"I really don't want to lose!" Lucy declared as she was wearing her signature white button up shirt and blue mini skirt and brown boots.
"What are you complaining about? Unless you suck and get last place there isn't even a punishment." Gajeel remarked gruffly crossing his arms.
"I don't really care who gets last or even second place. First place will be mine and I can finally prove myself to Levy-chan!" Jet declared as Levy briefly looked up at him with a flat look.
"Good luck with that." Levy said politely.
'Hasn't worked the other times but yeah I will definitely be swooning after the race.' Levy thought sarcastically as she honestly could not see herself being in a relationship with either of her teammates.
"SO COOL!" A loud voice shouted as everyone turned around to see the reporter Jason from Sorcerer Weekly appear seemingly out of nowhere with microphone in one hand and pen and paper in the other.
"Listen viewers of Sorcerer Weekly! I am here today with the members of Fairy Tail in their annual race! I sadly was never able to catch live interview in previous years but today is our cool day!" Jason stated as he was impressively writing everything he said while he said it was a magical pen.
"Um Master is it okay for him to watch this?" Lisanna whispered to Makarov who coughed.
"There is nothing wrong with a little publicity one in a while Lisanna-chan." Makarov as she gave him a dry look.
"Oh my gosh! It's the Jason! I am so screwed! I should have worn a sexy dress or at least brushed my hair for him to take pictures of my body!" Lucy whined as Naruto merely raised an eyebrow.
"It would hinder your running speed running in a party dress." Happy reminded her as she glared up at him.
"Shut up Mr. I-can-fly cat!" Lucy hissed.
"Is there anything you would like to say before the race starts Master Makarov?" Jason asked as he out his microphone to record Makarov words.
"Yes. Cough cough. Fairy Tail! Today is a day not for punishment or rewards but a day to celebrate another year of growing stronger and closer! However, a race will be meaningless without an outcome so whomever cannot retrieve a Wyven Scale and return to this line within 24 hours will lose! Also whoever is in last place in the race shall lose!" Makarov declared putting a fist on his chest in salute.
"One last thing! Due to complaints from previous years. Flying shall no longer be allowed. All other form of magic and abilities will be permitted as long as no lasting injuries occour!" Makarov added.
'I am so screwed!' Evergreen and Happy thought in horror.
Even Carla started to sweat as she was used to being carried in Wendy's arms or flying neither possible during a race.
Mira in a pair of form fitting black jeans and black top looked at Naruto curiously as she heard he could fly using Sky devil or Sky Dragon magic but he seemed eerily calm.
Natsu suddenly raised his fist up and set it on fire.
"Gramps! What does the first-place winner receive?" Natsu shouted.
"Hmm. I suppose one wish that is realistic from me as guild master should be sufficient." Makarov thought out loud as suddenly Jet grin grew.
'Yes I can ask Master to have jobs that only require Team Shadow Gear so I can show off more to Levy-chan!' Jet thought.
'Hmm probably not going to win but I guess more booze budget or maybe get some poor rich kid to pay off my debts in exchange for looking down my top.' Cana thought drily.
As other people were thinking of possible victories or at least thinking of not being the dead last Naruto grew a fox-like grin which was not noticed by the guild.
'Oh, bad move Master. You really should have just stuck to your guns and only had a punishment.' Naruto thought greedily.
'I won't be too mean. I mean they did think I was just someone who got S-class by virtue of luck then skill.' Naruto rationalized as despite accepting why the guild didn't trust him at first doesn't mean he forgot his somewhat cold reception when he kept his S-class title.
"Now you brats!" Makarov announced as everyone got into a running stance except Naruto who looked absolutely relaxed and at east.
"Get set!" Makarov stated as everyone was on edge except Naruto who continued to stretch his arms into the air.
"And…..!" Makarov shouted slowly down as he smirked seeing everyone just barely containing themselves from starting early and possibly getting disqualified.
'Hurry up Geezer! Stop posturing!' Gray mentally snapped as his eye twitched.
"Go!" Makarov shouted.
"Cool!" Jason screamed as he was wide eyed.
"See you losers!" Jet shouted as he activated his Speed magic causing him to accelerate instantly.
The force of his magic on his feet and the ground caused the ground to collapse and crack making everyone near him fall on their asses.
"Not fair!" Everyone whined as Jet was already a dozen meters away in the few moments.
Naruto had jumped when the ground cracked as he closed his eyes and took a small breath.
'Ready? Kurama?' Naruto thought with a smirk as he got a grunt in response.
Naruto opened his eyes revealing they were were orange with small slit for the pupils.
"Nani!" Makarov shouted as suddenly what could only be considered a sonic boom erupted.
Naruto had flicked his finger as an invisible barrier appeared in front of Makarov, Kinanna, Lisanna and Jason shielding them.
Everyone else was blown back dozens of feet from the impact of a flash of yellow light. Even Jet was sent flying back behind the starting line.
"What kind of train hit me?" Natsu asked groggily as his eyes were in swirls as he was sent flying back and hit his head like most of guild.
"Was that a person? But who could produce so much force from whatever that was?" Erza asked as she coughed as there was a massive dust cloud from whatever hit them.
"No fair. I was ahead." Jet complained as he was squished between several members of his guild landing on him. Unfortunately, none were Levy who had landed with Lucy on their butts but not with other members on top of them.
Everyone looked up as their heard a familiar whistle.
"Hey guys. Did you enjoy your nap?" Naruto asked rather a cocky grin.
Naruto stood one foot away from the starting line facing it showing he was presumably on his way back to the finish line. He had one hand raised up as red energy hovered and took the form of a massive claw that was holding something above his head.
"Naruto? What's happening?" Erza asked.
"That's impossible!" Makarov whispered as he had his jaw to the floor.
Everyone turned to the shell-shocked master of Fairy Tail.
"Master? What's wrong?" Lisanna asked sweetly as she was surprised but pleased, she was not blown away but whatever happened.
"That's all of the Wyven scales I placed at Mount Ivor." Makarov gasped as he pointed to the claw hovering in front of Naruto.
Everyone quickly turned to Naruto who was still whistling and smirking. Indeed, in his red claw was not random pieces of junk but a massive amount of Wyven Scales piled and held up by the claw.
"Wait!" Jet screamed.
"It can't be!" Macao shouted.
"Naruto-sensei… Did you?!" Wendy asked wide eyed.
Naruto took two feet forward as he crossed the finish line.
"I win!" Naruto said cheerfully as he crossed his arms and let the claw gently place the scales in front of him.
'Master never said we couldn't take more then one scale and he did specify that ANYONE who couldn't bring back a scale before the 24 hours was a loser so…' Naruto thought as a chibi him with an evil smrik appeared in his mind.
AN2: The Troupe is usually the younger guy has an attractive older woman who 'nurses' him in anime and is unaware the effect they have on them. But in this case it Naruto being attentive to the younger Wendy and not realizing the effect it has on her.
AN3: I promise this little exchange will pay off. It's a small hint of Naruto past with Mavis.
AN4: Yeah I had to add another Mavis cameo. Kinda got a Mavis vibe after the omake in chapter 50 lol. She has a lot of history with Naruto after all (they did spend 7 years together more or less alone). She loves Naruto while Naruto thinks of her as 'important' and 'precious'.
AN5: Yeah she is just Juvia to herself. Not with any honorifics.
AN6: technically a retcon from chapter 26 but its more Naruto acknowledging the possibility of organs becoming Dragon lacrima.
AN7: Yeah I am ripping the Avengers: Age of Ultron scene but you know I did explicitly say that they wont let just anyone pick them up anyways.
AN8: My head canon on why Fairy tail 75 Mira was shown explicitly exempt from the race (and the only one who was). But here she didn't lose Lisanna so she is still active while Lisanna is more 'very loosely' part time as she works mostly at the bar now with Kinanna.
AN9: probably an exaggeration but I have not seen anything in the manga/anime that suggests simply increasing his running speed increases the force of his attacks (unlike say flash from the DC).
