Eyes of Rage
A world of eternal darkness. That was what the Xyz Dimension had become over the last three years. Even during the daytime, almost no light could penetrate the veil of darkness the clouds above produced. The only other constant was the permanent threat of death if you ran into Academia's forces. Unfortunately, that was exactly what he had done.

Feeling the torrent of fire wash over him, the boy had to use every ounce of his strength to stay standing. Did it hurt like hell? Yes. Was it worth it to see the look of irritation on the mook's face? Also yes.
"I activate Half Unbreak! During this turn, Gagaga Magician can't be destroyed by battle, and any damage I take from battles involving it is halved!"
"Heh, so you had the foresight to use it before the Battle Phase. Not bad, but you'll still lose most of your Life Points. Battle! Ultimate Ancient Gear Hunting Hound attacks Gagaga Magician!"

"Oh, I forgot to mention," the mook grinned. "Ultimate Ancient Gear Hunting Hound can attack three times each turn."
The boy's eyes widened at the statement. That... was a problem.
'If I knew that it could attack three times in a row, I would have activated Guardraw after Half Unbreak! I can still win this, but I'll need to time it perfectly. On the next attack, I'll...!'
"I attack with Ancient Gear Hunting Hound! Finish this!"
"I activate the effect of Tasuke Knight in my Graveyard! Since my opponent declared an attack while I had no cards in my hand, I can Special Summon it from the Graveyard and end the Battle Phase! And with that, I win!" The boy boasted. In truth, it was a bluff, but his opponent didn't need to know that.
"And how do you plan on doing that?" The goon laughed. "No Xyz Monster you could make with Level 4 monsters has enough Attack Points to defeat Ultimate Ancient Gear Hunting Hound. But I'll humor you before you die. I end my turn. Now go ahead and beat me," the soldier mocked.
Wiping that smirk off his face was going to feel good.

This was it. This draw would determine whether or not he could win on this turn or if he'd have to wait, potentially giving his opponent a chance for a comeback.
"It's my turn!" He shouted, digging his heel into the dirt. Flipping the card over in his hand, he smirked once he saw its name. "I'm gonna jet! I overlay Level 4 Gagaga Magician and Tasuke Knight!" He announced. "King of wishes, hear my cry! Inherit the will of the light and soar on white wings! Carrying the blade of hope, cut through despair and forge a new path! Xyz Summon! Rank Four! Until the rising sun appears over the horizon, I will believe! Utopia, Knight of Hope!"

"I told you it's useless! Twenty-five hundred is still too weak to beat Hunting Hound! Now stop wasting my time and just roll over and die like the Xyz trash you are already!" The man yelled.
That hit a nerve. While it wasn't breaking any new ground in terms of Academia's insults, the boy couldn't stand to hear his people being degraded like that. Oh yeah, this was over.
"Battle! Utopia attacks Hunting Hound! Hope Sword Knight Slash! Then I activate Utopia's effect! If a monster attacks, I can negate the attack! Moon Barrier!"
The man broke out into an uncontrollable fit of laughter once the boy negated his own attack. "'And with that, I win,' is that right? Give me a break, you can't even duel properly! Here's a bit of advice. You're supposed to keep me from attacking you, not keep yourself from attacking me."
"I wasn't done yet!" The boy cried, visibly annoyed at having been called a bad duelist. "Utopia's effect lets me drop the Attack Points of a monster my opponent controls by five-hundred multiplied by the difference in its Rank and my opponent's monster's Level or Rank, then it gains five-hundred Attack Points for every one thousand Attack Points your monster lost until my next End Phase! Moon Gazer! Which means, uh... just hold on a sec..." The boy said, counting it out on his fingers as his Duel Disk's computer calculated it automatically.

"T-t-thirty-five hundred Attack Points?!" The man stammered, stumbling backwards.
"Wait, uh... Y-yeah! W-what you said! Utopia has thirty-five hundred Attack Points and Hunting Hound has three hundred. That's right... I hope..." He muttered the last part under his breath.
"But even with all of those Attack Points, you still can't attack Hunting Hound! I can just switch it to Defense Position next turn, then you can't win!" The man said, clearly having been rattled.
"I didn't say I was finished yet, did I?" The boy smiled. "I activate the Quick-Play Spell Double or Nothing! If a monster's attack was negated, its Attack Points are doubled and it can make another attack this turn!"

The mook managed to get away before the boy got to ask him any questions, but that was fine. There's always tomorrow, he thought. Until light comes to this world again, I'll hold onto my hope. It's what Dad would've wanted.
"Let me make sure I understand this. You're a time traveler from twenty years in your world's future who woke up in the Standard Dimension after having been stranded in the void between realities," Reiji said, his gaze locked on the Pendulum creator's lookalike, the glow of the monitors tinting his visage in a soft green light.
"Yeah, that about sums it up," the alternate Yuya replied from his seat next to the gray-haired CEO, taking a sip of his coffee. "I don't remember much from immediately before I woke up here. It's kind of like waking up from a dream, you know? You can remember almost all of it, but the end gets really fuzzy when you try to think about it."
Admittedly, he did remember that it seemed like something had been calling him before he exited the void, but he chalked that up to his imagination. And even if that had been the case, he was still slightly paranoid that Reiji would throw him into the nearest dimensional portal the moment he slipped up, so he felt it best to keep that nugget of information to himself for the time being. Well, that and hope that Reiji didn't figure out he was hiding something on his own, given that the other man was currently staring holes through him. Fortunately for him, a large man with black hair and sunglasses approached Reiji at that moment.
"Pardon the intrusion, President, but it's time to depart for your 4 o'clock meeting with Queen, the CEO of SOL Technologies. Den City is some time from here, so it would be best to leave early in case of traffic," Nakajima stated.
"Tell her that unforeseen circumstances prevented me from being able to attend and that I can meet with her at any time next week. We can continue our discussion about the VRAINS project then. And please update the Lancers Selection with the names of the new arrivals who are fighting against Fusion. I'll have a message sent to their Duel Disks once the Selection Test concludes," Reiji instructed, waving his hand.
"Of course, sir. Right away," Nakajima replied, bowing before taking his leave.
"As for you," the CEO began, refocusing his attention on the duplicate. "I would like for you to become a member of the Lancers, as well."
"Well, got my cardio for the week in," Yuya panted, lifting his head slightly to gaze at the vastness of the ruins before him. "Really should've come up with an actual plan before I bolted, but I wanted to get away from those three before I went crazy. Not sure why my first thought was to come here of all places, but I guess it works," he mused to himself, thinking back to the three Fusion deserters (or so he assumed) that he had encountered after Yuto disappeared. And at that moment, he took off again. It was as if every one of his instincts were screaming at him to hurry, that something terrible was about to happen.
And what he found once he reached his destination was Yuto, battered and gasping for breath, three Obelisk Force soldiers standing before him. While they had two copies of Ancient Gear Howitzer in Defense Position, one Ancient Gear Castle, and an Ancient Gear Hydra, Yuto's field looked quite bare by comparison, with simply Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon and two face-down cards.
"At the start of the Battle Phase, I activate the Trap Card The Phantom Knights Fall Back!" Yuto called, as Dark Rebellion soared high into the sky and out of view. "I banish Dark Rebellion until the End Phase, but in exchange I reduce all damage I take this turn by one thousand points for each Overlay Unit Dark Rebellion had when it was banished! Dark Rebellion had two Overlay Units, meaning the damage is reduced by 2000 points!" Dark Rebellion's Overlay Units then came crashing down from the sky, striking the soldiers'

"You'll reduce the damage, but you won't block it completely! Ancient Gear Hydra attacks the player directly!" One of the soldiers declared as Hydra fired a blast from its mouth at Yuto.

"It's my turn! I draw!" Yuto's expression shifted to a frown when he saw the card he'd drawn.
"Didn't get want you wanted, Xyz trash?" One of the soldiers smirked.
"Y-Yuto?" Yuya asked nervously.
"Yuya. If you're just going to stand there and watch, then watch closely. I'll show you a kind of Xyz Monster you've never even imagined. Bear witness to Alter Xyz Change."
"Alter Xyz what?" Yuya asked, not entirely sure if he'd heard right. It sounded like some sort of transformation, but the pounding in his head and storm of emotions that had seized him left him unsure of his senses.
"With the Rank 4 Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, I rebuild the Overlay Network! This is the power of an Xyz Monster, reborn and transformed! Watch as Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon takes on a new existence! Jet-black dragon of rebellion, be reborn from the abyss of my soul, and pass judgment on those foolish enough to rise against you with scornful fangs! Alter Xyz Change! Descend! RANK FOUR! DARK REVILER XYZ DRAGON!" Yuto cried, as Dark Rebellion, or at least what Yuya thought was Dark Rebellion appeared on the field. Even while being a short distance away, Yuya could feel its power radiating off of it. It was like its power was permeating throughout the atmosphere. He felt as if he was suffocating, though from what he wasn't entirely sure. But even as Dark Reviler appeared, he couldn't help but worry. Move, he thought. Why am I just standing here, he thought. I have to do something, he thought. If he could see himself, he may have noticed that his hair was starting to rise on end, and that his eyes were beginning to glower with a bright red light.

Launching the burst of electricity at Ancient Gear Hydra, the Fusion user's monster immediately dropped to the ground from its position in the air, as if it were being crushed underneath the lightning coursing through it. Just then, a bolt shot out from the monster's body and struck its master, as Dark Reviler reabsorbed some of the discharge and sent it towards Yuto's heart. The sight of it caused Yuya's heart to beat faster, to the point that he could hear it in his ears. It felt like he could...

Yuto declared, as Dark Reviler rocketed towards the machine at blinding speeds, totaling it in a single strike. "With that, I play one card face-down and end my turn," Yuto said as he braced himself for the next round.

"It's-" Obelisk Force Red began, before pausing as he felt the air pressure thicken. His throat felt like a hand was clamped tightly around it, like a single false move would cause his throat to be crushed. Looking around, he saw nothing but the green-haired boy from before, but something about him felt... different, somehow. Wrong, even. His fears were only amplified once the boy spoke.
"It's my turn," Yuya spoke, his voice coming out as a low growl, as his eyes burned with a cold fury and his hair appeared to be wilder, giving him an overall intimidating visage. He didn't even flinch at the shock from the intrusion penalty. If anything, the dark aura radiating off of him only seemed to grow slightly larger from it.

"It's my turn. I draw. With the Scale One Stargazer Magician, and the Scale Eight Timegazer Magician, I set the Pendulum Scale," Yuya said. Despite his fearsome appearance, Obelisk Force Blue mentally noted that he seemed to be completely calm, which was frankly even more terrifying to him.
"I Pendulum Summon a monster. Come forth, Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon. I then activate the Spell Card Pendulum Storm. I destroy as many Pendulum Monsters in the Pendulum Zones as possible, then I destroy one of my opponent's Spell or Trap cards. I destroy my Magicians, then I destroy Ancient Gear Castle. I then activate the Spell Card Pendulum Call. I discard Performapal Whip Snake and add Xiangke Magician and Xiangsheng Magician from my Deck to my hand. With the Scale Three Xiangke Magician, and the Scale Eight Xiangsheng Magician, I set the Pendulum Scales!" Yuya shouted, raising his voice for the first time since he had joined the Duel.

Looking for the source of the voice, Yellow locked eyes with Yuto, who had been silent for the entire turn, but whose eyes burned with the same ferocity as Yuya's.
"I activate the Trap Card Phantom Knights' Overture. This card changes the Level of all monsters on the field to the Level of a monster of my choice. I choose Ancient Gear Hydra, meaning that both of the Howitzers become Level Seven monsters!"

"It's over," the two said in unison. "Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon attacks the player directly! Imperial Wrath Revolt – STRIKE DISOBEY!"

And almost as suddenly as the hurricane inside of Yuya's head had appeared, it vanished. Blinking rapidly, he attempted to re-orient himself to his surroundings. His trance was broken by Judai (or Johan, he didn't know who was who) calling his name.
"Yo! Sakaki!" Judai called. "Take a chill pill next time you start getting that angry. I thought the world was about to end from how loud you got for a minute there. That Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon was pretty cool, though."
Yuya blinked.
"What's an Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon?"

Yeah, Stolen Memories would've actually come after Memoir 2 originally, but I was having some troubles in the writing processes for this chapter and M2, so I just bumped Stolen Memories up one spot, since that chapter is mostly setup for Synchro. No other manga Yu-boys, though.
Kirbstagoon's Review: I swear, the only reason I know who Honest's true identity is likely to turn out being is because I came off reading another fanfic with him in it (I won't spoil things for the people who read the reviews and the review replies, I'm cheeky that way) and I called both Judai and Yusei being in this, Yusei was easier to call due to watching 5d's rn, and by that logic, surely Yuma and Yugi will turn up. I honestly caught the joke with manga Yuya saying that he's just a phantom, as his nickname in the manga was Phantom (I just read the whole thing and reviewed after it)
I'm actually enjoying this so far, and if I'm correct about the protag thing, can Kaito PLEASE use a hybrid of his Cipher and Photon decks? Galaxy Eyes Photon Dragon is iconic to anyone who's seen Zexal and it honestly works pretty well with Galaxy Eyes Cipher dragon

Thank you for being polite and not dropping any potential spoilers. The legacy character introduced in this chapter shouldn't be too hard to guess, but I dunno about Yugi, man. All I'll say about him for now is that he may or may not show up at some point. ;) I got some new stuff planned for Kaito's deck, but we're still a while off from Xyz at this point, so stick around, I suppose.
