Chapter 2: New Acquaintance

Kim glared at the blonde boy, looking down at him and judging his intentions as best she could (without using her powers). She glanced around to see that the rest of the tables were already nearly full… and a few students were watching her with great interest.

"Y-You don't have to, j-just thought I'd offer-" the boy squeaked, cutting off when the new girl simply sat down. Kim seemed to be ignoring him, even as she occupied the space right in front of him. "Oh, okay…" he mumbled, returning to his food.

Kim focused entirely on the lunch that she'd brought with her. She opened it up, observing a colorful mix of different things she'd never seen before. A smile was already returning to her face at the sight of food and the mystery of what it would taste like.

Kim caught the blonde in front of her glancing at her lunch, before sighing and returning to his own. He seemed to have gotten something form that food line she'd seen earlier. It appeared to be some sort of mix, honestly looking like a sloppy mess (the color wasn't all that appealing either). 'It might still taste good… I could try it a different day…' she mused.

"You wouldn't want to try this… trust me…" the blonde boy suddenly spoke up, playing with his food.

"What?"

"I noticed you looking at it… Trust me on this, if you have the chance to bring something from home? It's much better than eating this… stuff…" he added, taking a slow bite of his meal.

Kim simply eyed him, a scowl on her face. "If it's really that bad, then why are you eating it?" she challenged, wondering if he simply wanted to keep the school's food to himself. To be honest, Kim was still a bit miffed about what'd happened before with Josh and the cheerleaders.

The boy in front of her simply shrugged the question off. "I don't really have a choice, most days…"

Kim watched as he inspected the contents of his spoon once again, before slowly putting it into his mouth and swallowing. She could clearly see that he didn't seem to enjoy the slop all that much- hell, he was barely able to eat it at all! "I see… thank you for the heads up, I'll be sure to avoid getting my meal here…" she responded coolly, making sure to carefully weigh her words.

"I-It's not all bad… Sometimes they serve half decent pizza, so there's that…" he admitted.

"Pizza?" Kim asked, unfamiliar with that food. She'd only just learned what pancakes were today.

"Yeah… it's pretty good, I guess-" He noticed her confused expression. "You HAVE had pizza before, right?"

Kim's eyes widened for half a second, before her cold expression returned. Had she said something odd? Blown her cover so very casually?

"W-Wow… I-I've never heard of anyone not trying a pizza before…" he stuttered, carefully watching her face before glancing away. "But I guess I don't really get out much… sorry if that came out wrong."

Kim's expression calmed and she nodded, eagerly grasping the opportunity to pass the blame onto him. "It's fine… they just didn't have that where I came from…" she answered, going back to ignoring him and focusing on her own lunch.

Several minutes passed, Kim eagerly enjoying her food and the quiet from the boy in front of her. The silence was a welcome change of pace, after all she needed time to focus on her thoughts.

Specifically, the little predicament regarding her test. She was still nowhere near to finding out what she needed to do, let alone actually accomplishing it. The idea of capturing hearts, without her powers, was both annoying and challenging- but she was going to succeed in it, no matter what!

"S-Say… K-Kim…" the boy began.

Kim looked up from her now empty lunchbox at her unwanted companion, she could see that he'd already finished his meal and was now fiddling with something in his hand. An odd, glowing thing. He shoved it back into his pocket.

"How do you know my name?" she questioned, a bit of heat in her tone.

The blonde student just looked confused, and slightly hurt, for a moment. "I-I'm actually in your c-class…" he explained.

"You are?" It was Kim's turn to appear confused. Was he really in her class? If so, why hadn't she noticed him? Granted, ever since she'd met that annoying insect Josh, she had been in a pretty bad mood… Kim had probably ignored everyone around her, focusing on her class.

"Ouch… but, I guess it doesn't matter…" The blonde teen shook his head for a moment. "Anyways… I just wanted to give you a heads up…" he declared, moving his head closer (but not enough to actually reach her). "Before you came in… he- Josh was saying some stuff about you…" he admitted, noticing her serious expression.

"What exactly did he say?" she asked, her tone icy.

The boy glanced away for a moment, checking to see if anyone was looking at them. "Something about you threatening him… after he helped you… I wasn't listening from the start, sorry…"

"Did he now…" Kim growled, feeling her claws growing just a bit. She was seriously considering finding the inferior little shit and chopping him up into little pieces, before crushing his worthless soul and tearing it apart.

"Yeah… but I'm sure it'll all be forgotten in a few days…" the blonde in front of her soothed, sounding like he was trying to cheer her up… as odd as that sounded.

"I… see…" she replied, her voice suspicious. Kim waited for his request, the payment he would no doubt demand for all the information he had provided. Telling her about potentially harmful food, in addition to the reason why the rest of the students had given her the cold shoulder.

She'd deal with that in due time.

Kim waited for him to open his mouth, to ask/demand what he wanted from her. She continued waiting for almost two minutes, before finally becoming frustrated enough to look back up at him.

"W-What?"

"Aren't you going to ask me something?" she clarified, her tone a bit angry.

"Um… no?" he responded, grabbing the sides of his tray and picking it up as he stood. "A-Anyways, see you in class, Kim…" was the last thing he said, before walking away from the table.

Kim was left alone, thinking about what the nervous blonde student had said. He'd been very upfront about several useful things that would save her some time. 'Just like Josh was…' the crucial difference being that the one she'd just talked to seemed to honestly say those things for her benefit. That and the fact that he was quite meek and weak looking… while that insect Josh was confident.

Her thoughts stopped as soon as she heard a familiar bell ringing, marking the end of their break. She'd have time to sort her thoughts out later…

Class had, once again, been very informative for the demoness. She'd paid as much attention as she could, soaking up all the information she was told. At one point, something caught her eye. Kim glanced next to her, noticing that she was sitting next to a blonde student.

It was the same one who'd sat with her at lunch break, where he had given her those heads up. 'Oh… so he really IS in my class…' Kim understood why he was slightly hurt when she'd failed to recognize him. 'Not that it matters…' she scoffed to herself, returning her focus to her class. It was so much more interesting, after all.

The school was already over, for the most part. As soon as the bell rang again, their teacher had left the room. When he did so many students had followed suit, the rest left to take their time and finish talking to their friends.

Kim herself couldn't really do anything at the moment, not with everything that'd happed between her, Josh, and the rest of the student body. She just needed to take her time, until she powered through this little ordeal and got started on her task.

At the very least, it could serve to give her an opportunity to think about how to proceed from here. There was still the riddle of her test to work out, after all…

Her body moved out of the class, Kim making her way towards the school's exit. Her temporary, new home was her destination. She swore to eat something when she got there, to make up for this bust of a first day.

'Mmm? What's that?' The demoness could faintly hear something coming from one of the hallways that piqued her interest. Kim still had time, choosing to investigate a bit.

Walking for about a minute, the girl arrived at a strange scene. She was looking at four students who were talking about something. Well… talking might have been a bit of a stretch, considering that three of the boys were cornering the shorter one (who was backed up into a wall, as they closed in on him).

"You think your so clever Ronnie, muscling in on my territory?" The one leading said 'talk' was none other than that insect, Josh. On either side of him were two other students, their smirks clearly indicating their amusement.

'So, that's what he is…' Kim deduced, easily understanding the situation. That human Josh was the strongest one in this school, he used his power to torment the weaker ones. She couldn't say she disapproved, Kim had done the same (and much worse) in the past… Some of her classmates had lost limbs when they'd tried something, others were never found again (if they'd pissed her off enough).

It was a very demonic thing to do… very fitting for her and the way she lived her life.

"J-Josh! I-I don't know what you're talk-" The boy called Ronnie was slammed against the wall, Josh himself having shoved him against it.

Kim suddenly felt something… a familiar, warm feeling she basked in regularly… her anger.

For some reason, as soon as Kim understood the scene, she bared her teeth and her fist clenched. She didn't really understand why her body moved, Kim now standing in front of the four boys.

Josh's two lackeys stared at her in surprise, unsure of what to do upon being caught bullying someone. Josh simply spared her half a glance, before focusing his gaze back on his victim.

"I'm a bit busy Kim, mind if we do this later?" the blonde annoyance commented casually, ignoring her for the most part.

"No, I think now is better…" the girl hissed, enough hostility leaking through to encourage Josh's minions to back away.

Josh let "Ronnie" down. "Really now? Are you THAT eager to get on my good side?" He moved closer towards her. "Already regretting what you did-" he whispered, cutting off as a sudden pain filled his chest. So much so that he lost his balance and fell to one knee, before he started coughing.

"D-Dude, you okay?!" one of the guys asked, moving to the blonde's side.

Josh couldn't answer, pounding on his chest as if he had something stuck in his throat. The boy's eyes suddenly bulged out, before he ran past Kim and down the hall.

"H-Hey! Josh, wait up!" the two boys called out, hurrying after their leader.

"Well… that was unexpected…" Kim muttered, walking away from the blonde victim (who was now staring at her). She smirked to herself, pleased at the little punishment she'd given the insect who DARED think he was stronger than her.

The girl proceeded to make her way out of school- which was now much quieter, as most students had left already. She suddenly heard someone jogging towards her.

"H-Hey! Kim! Hold on a sec!" shouted a familiar voice, the redheaded demoness stopped and turned to face him. 'Great… now what?' she groused, staring at the weak boy she'd sat with during lunchtime.

"I-I just wanted to say… t-thanks. You know, for earlier…" He scratched his head and looked away, clearly feeling awkward.

"What? Before? What are you talking about?" she asked, faking confusion.

Kim had never touched Josh, hadn't even really approached him. The only thing she'd done was cast a little spell… something to make him more understanding, of course. No one could have been able to see anything… which begged the question, what did this boy mean?

"Well, you stopped him… Most- well, everyone just stays out of his way… But you made him stop, so I just wanted to say thanks!" he exclaimed, smiling brightly.

"I was just there by coincidence…" she shot back, waiting for his response.

"I know… but at least you distracted him long enough until he… You know, I'm not sure what happened to him… A stomachache, maybe?" the blonde suggested, before his eyes lit up. "He must have eaten the cafeteria food!"

Kim simply stared at the boy, her expression morphing from a dead serious face to a slight smile. 'He thinks that it was the FOOD?' The demoness couldn't help but start laughing at the ridiculousness of his reasoning.

His response was simply too idiotic to take seriously.

"Well, then I guess it's a good idea you warned me about it, Ronnie!" Kim suddenly declared, after her laughter had quieted down, her smile still apparent on her face.

"Ron…" the boy corrected.

"What?"

"My… my name, it's actually Ron" the blonde- Ron elaborated.

"It is?" Kim wondered aloud. "But I thought I heard that- Josh call you that…"

"Oh… yeah. It's sort of like his nickname for me, along with a few others, he likes to use it when they make fun of me…" He shook his head a few times. "Anyways, it's Ron… Ron Stoppable…"

"I see… Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow then, Ron-" the demoness replied, before he cut her off.

"Are you in a hurry right now?" he asked suddenly.

"No, just heading home…" Kim admitted, still no closer to her elusive answer.

"I was going to get some real food and I remembered that you've never had pizza before… so, I thought I'd offer… What do you say?" Ron asked.

Kim was left staring at the boy- Ron, recalling their little discussion during lunch. Oh well, it could prove to be interesting if nothing else. There was no danger for her, not to mention that the possibility of trying some new food was quite tempting.

"Sure, I have some time…" she agreed, watching how his face lit up.

The two ambled along, Ron leading the way with Kim walking next to him. While they travelled, Ron told her a few more things about their classes and teachers. Something about them not giving her a hard time because she was new, but that would soon fade. She appreciated the warning.

Something was bugging Kim, while they chatted idly. Why had she even chosen to intrude in the first place? Josh was asking for it, sure. But that didn't change the fact that she could've simply walked away and confronted him later, when no one else was around.

Why did she feel the need to intervene?

In several ways, Josh was like her. Kim was the strongest person where she came from, and was always more than happy to demonstrate as much if anyone challenged her! But what Josh had done? That wasn't REAL power… walking up in a group, cornering someone weaker than him away from prying eyes? That was something only a pathetic fool would do, just to feel an illusion of power.

Heaven, even SHE didn't do that… In hell, everyone knew how strong she was. Kim never made a move against someone weaker than her, just to prove she was strong. What was the point? If the demoness wanted to show how strong she was then she would go and challenge someone who was considered stronger, or one of her teachers!

This only proved how pathetic humans really were…

It took some time before the pair finally reached their destination. Kim looked in slight awe at the very large, oddly-shaped building as people went in and out of it. Various signs and glowing letters were attached to the structure. All in all? To her, it looked like the work of a madman.

Ron pulled Kim inside, leading her to the second floor of the place. The interior was cool, despite the strong lights attached to the ceiling. From there, the two entered an open area.

The first thing that caught Kim's attention was the smell, it made her head turn and really take notice of where she was.

"Well, welcome to the Middleton food court!" Ron shouted, before directing her to sit at a free table for four. "Give me a sec to get our food" he said, smiling before leaving her to stare at his back.

Kim was busy looking around, her eyes practically bulging out, everything was so different! Large, interesting, and (most importantly) it smelled so delicious! She could barely hold herself back from getting up and exploring on her own.

After two, excruciatingly long minutes Ron finally returned. He carried with him a single tray, with an odd-looking round object upon it.

"Is this… pizza?" she asked, in her opinion the thing looked quite big for a single person. Just something that proved humans always wanted more than they could have.

"Yep! Don't worry, it's on me!" the blonde boy exclaimed. He grabbed two napkins to hold the circle in place, cutting the pizza into smaller triangles with rounded ends. Ron grabbed a bigger napkin and put a slice on top of it, before presenting the food to Kim. "Here… try it!"

The redheaded demoness stared at the treat, it smelled delicious and really awakened her appetite. Glancing at the blonde boy with her, she watched him take a big bite out of his own slice.

Kim opened her mouth slowly, taking a small nibble. Her eyes opened wide, before she began to devour the whole thing.

A few hours later the two left the mall, Ron having shown her around the place as best he could.

"I still can't believe you've never tried it before…" he remarked.

"Is it really that odd?" Kim asked, feeling a bit giddy at the moment.

"Well, yeah… considering that you ate almost the whole thing-" The blonde boy suddenly froze, momentarily looking horrified. "T-That came out wrong… Sorry, I-I didn't-"

Kim cut him off, her head tilting to the side. "Why are you apologizing?"

"I-I, well… I offended you, didn't I?" he wondered aloud, looking quite timid (just like he had in school).

"No… I did eat a lot of it, so…" The girl simply shrugged it off, he'd just pointed out what she had done. Nothing bad, or offensive. Kim watched his expression return to the same smile she'd seen nearly continuously over the last few hours.

"I just meant that I- Never mind… and thanks again for today!" he enthused, recalling her 'help'.

"It's fine, I enjoyed it as well…" She honestly had, much to her surprise. Kim had assumed that their outing would end up similarly to what'd happened with Josh. But Ron seemed to be the complete opposite of the confident blonde. So much so, that Kim was willing admit that she'd had a good time (and not only because she had gotten to try pizza for the first time).

"Really?" Ron replied, sounding shocked, before smirking at her. "Well, if that's the case… we can always come here again- I-If you want, that is…" the blonde student amended, his smile becoming a bit nervous once more.

The demoness simply nodded her head for a yes. "Sure, I don't see why not… tomorrow then?"

"Wha- tomorrow?" Ron sounded surprised for a moment, before his expression changed to discomfort. "I-I would like to… but I have work tomorrow after school…"

Kim took a moment to understand, recalling what she'd learned about the human world in hell. Specifically, how important money/currency was to them (and how they would do unspeakable things to one another for more of it).

She wondered if Ron was one of those humans, before she scoffed. 'Of course he is… all of them are…' the girl chastised herself, already certain of the truth. "Okay, then I guess we'll postpone it…"

Ron agreed, the pair making their way back to an area more familiar to Kim before breaking off and heading for their respective homes.

Kim arrived at her new, temporary house. She closed the door after herself, walking deeper inside. She quickly noticed someone coming to greet her, a big smile on their face.

"Oh! Hey Kimmi!" Ann- her "mother" exclaimed with a bright expression, quite happy to see her "daughter". "You're a bit later than I expected, did something happen at school?" the older woman asked.

Kim took a moment, before she shook her head. "No… nothing…" The human didn't need to know about what she was up to.

"Really? And here I thought that classes ended a few hours ago…" the older women smiled. "Now come and join us, I've made dinner!"

The red demoness simply strode into the kitchen, joining her new "family". This time, it seemed that everyone was present. The father was sitting next to a free space where Ann would most likely to be, there was an extra chair next to the twins that was most likely hers.

Kim simply took a seat and stared into space, as if waiting for something, busy with her thoughts. She was still considering her task… not worrying about it, obviously. But still a bit confused about how she should go about achieving it.

Her thoughts were cut off, noticing her "brothers" staring at her very intently. Her head turned to the two smaller boys, sending them a flat look. "What is it?" she asked.

"Oh… it's nothing!" both boys insisted at the same time, before glancing at each other with big smiles plastered on their faces.

"What is it?" the redheaded demoness asked once more, in a much more threatening tone.

"We saw you today… at the mall!" began one of them.

"With a boy!" the other finished, they both laughed at the same time.

Kim could only scoff, closing her eyes in annoyance. 'They're supposed to be my brothers… so I can't kill them… yet…' she told herself, gritting her teeth and holding herself back.

"Oh, is that right Kim?" her "father" interjected, staring at his "daughter" with a bit more interest than before.

"It's just someone from school…" she answered simply, the boredom in her voice apparent.

"Is he your boyfriend?" both twins asked, their grins even bigger than before.

"I'll make sure to skin your hides later…" Kim hissed angrily, before realizing what she'd just said. The redheaded demonesses eyes opened in shock at her little slipup. She frantically wracked her brain for some excuse, perhaps she could claim that it was simply a joke, when she heard her brothers yell.

"MOM! Kim is threatening to kill us!" they called out, giving her away.

All hope of pretense was thrown out the window, they'd clearly both heard her and were now spreading that little blunder around. Was this it? Had she failed her mission already?

Her claws started to pop out underneath the table, Kim was seconds away from using her powers to wipe their memories… or make sure they all "mysteriously disappeared". Before she could act Ann suddenly spoke up, back still to her family.

"Kimmi, don't threaten your brother at the dinner table…" the woman chided weakly, continuing to work. "And that goes for you two as well… don't annoy your sister…" Ann lightly scolded.

'W-What?' Kim couldn't help but freeze, her claws retracting once more. Was that… it? Her slipup was brushed over as a mere joke? On the one hand, she was grateful that she was still safe. But, on the other hand… what was WRONG with these humans?

Kim sat in her new room, in front of her desk, staring at a nearly blank page inside her notebook. The demoness was glaring at two simple words that she'd written there several minutes ago.

'Heart Collecting'.

'What does that even mean?' Kim fumed, her pencil rhythmically tapping on the paper over and over as she thought.

After their meal was finished, she'd thanked Ann and headed up to her room. Kim really had enjoyed dinner, as it was much meatier than what she'd been expecting based on this morning. It had been no less incredible, she could definitely get used to this…

The redheaded girl excused herself, claiming she had some homework to work on… Which was kinda true, when she thought about it.

'How am I supposed to do this?' Kim mused, the question kept popping up. She wasn't supposed to use her powers, or make other humans do it for her, nor was she allowed to rip them apart (like her inferior, Bonnie, had suggested at the time).

"Still no answer…" she hissed to herself, before noticing something out of the corner of her eye.

Two sets of heads were peeking over her shoulders, an interested look on their faces.

"What are you two doing here?!" she yelled, turning around to face the small humans.

"What ya working on, big sis?" one of the little annoyances asked with clear interest (and not an ounce of fear).

Kim grumbled and closed the notebook. "Just some school stuff… now what are you doing in my room?!" she exclaimed, confident they would never figure out her true identity.

The twins looked at her for a moment before glancing at each other, as if having a silent conversation. "Do you need some help?"

Kim froze for a moment… help? SHE needed help? The redheaded demoness was beyond stunned. Never- in her existence- had she asked for, or needed, assistance with pretty much anything.

And these… pesky and annoying little creatures wanted to help HER?!

Kim would have smitten them down, to hell with her cover! …if only she wasn't so stump at the moment. The girl sighed, before grabbing her notebook and opening to the page she'd written her task.

Both twins looked at the two words in confusion. "This is what you need to do?" they asked, slightly confused.

"It's not so simple…" she responded. "Think of it like a final test, or a very large project…" Kim closed the notebook, sliding it across her desk. "Now… if you don't mind, I'd like to go back to work-"

"So, you need them to admire you?" one of the twins suddenly asked.

"W-What?" Kim yelped, now she was the confused one.

"Yeah, like, make them acknowledge and praise you for something you did…" the other twin added.

Kim's eyes widened, she needed their… PRAISE?

It… it made sense, in a way…

'No powers, or magic… keeping my cover…' Was this her last test? To make humans admire her?

"That's it!" she suddenly shouted, shocked by the realization.

It was so simple! So much so, that it had been almost impossible to figure out!

"So… did we help out?" the twins asked at the same time.

"Y-You…" She sighed and smiled. "Yes, you did… I guess I won't have to kill you two after all…" she lowkey threatened once more.

"Oh yeah! Jim and Tim to the rescue!" they both declared with huge smirks in an annoying tone.

"I take it back… I WILL end you when I get the chance!" Kim declared angrily.

"You're welcome, big sis!" one of them called out, both brothers rushing out of the room.

"No one will find your bodies!"
