Yours Truly, Dorie

DISCLAIMER: I don't own Dorie because I think he was a real person. But I do own Maria.

Stealing sucks, and so do the people who do it. If you wanna borrow something, please ask! I won't bite! :-)

Thanks to Jean Griffin in the Pearl Harbor forum for giving me the idea to write about Dorie!

December 6, 1941

My dearest Maria,

First, I want to tell you something. Don't let it worry you, though. And don't let it break your heart.

I'm not exactly a Navy general. Okay, I'm not even close. But I do work with a lot of Navy men. I'm a lousy cook in a smelly galley in the U.S.S. Arizona. But the lieutenant says I'm good at my job. He says he'll promote me, so I can have a real Navy uniform.

As usual, I was in the ring, boxing with a big "champion" navy man. He was beating me up real bad at first, but then my friends called me to my corner and said I had to win, for all the black Navy men. I guess that made me win (can you believe your Dorie won?), but I think it was all because of this army pilot. His name is Captain Walker, I think, and I'm sure he was the only white guy to bet on my winnings. When I went back in that ring, I hit him (the "champ", not Walker) a good one and he went down.

Well, I better go, Maria. It's nearly three o'clock, and I need to start fixing supper for the men. We just got a shipment of potatoes, which means one thing: tomorrow's breakfast is eggs and potatoes. I'll probably have to get up at four o'clock to peel them.

Oh, and Maria, please don't tell my Mama I'm just a stupid cook. But don't lie to her either. I don't want her to be disappointed in me.

I miss you every day, and I love you even more.

Yours truly,
Dorie

Maria held the letter in her hands, letting her tears drop to the paper, blurring the ink. It was December 14, and Maria hoped with all her heart that Dorie was still alive. Or maybe it was all a dream, the bombing. Or maybe it wasn't the Arizona that sank. But either way, all Maria wanted was Dorie right now, to hold her in her arms, and tell her everything would be all right.
