Remembered Forever

Disclaimer- I do not own "The Last Unicorn", the story was created by Peter S. Beagle and belongs to him and probably a bunch of other people. I am not making any money off this story, so please do not sue me. ÒDust In The WindÓ belongs to Kansas, not me, but please donÕt sue me as IÕm not making any money off using the song in my story.

Author's Notes- Alright, this is another fanfic inspired by me reading "The Last Unicorn" and then listening to my Kansas CD. When I was listening to ÒDust In the WindÓ I was inspired to write this story, so here it is. It takes place sometime after the novel and is around the Unicorn and her thoughts. I hope you like it!

I close my eyes, only for a moment
And the moment's gone
All my dreams pass before my eyes
A curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is
Dust in the wind

How long had it been? The Unicorn did not know. Time had no meaning for her. She did not notice when it passed, for she alone was untouched by time.

But, there was a part of her, a little piece, that would always be mortal. And that piece ached to know how long it had been and what had happened to those she had known.

But, at the same time she didnÕt want to know. She sensed it had been a long time and that things had changed greatly in those years and that the mortals she had known were gone.

As gone as the Lady Amalthea who had only existed for a short time but whose loves and regrets would last forever in the heart of a Unicorn.

Same old songs, just a drop of water
In an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground
Though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind, all we are is
Dust in the wind

The Unicorn knew that she would never change. She would always simply be there and her forest would not change, but the outside world would and had.

She knew it from the hunters who occasionally rode in her woods. There clothes and weapons had changed, though her magic still stopped them from hunting here.

Other things had changed although she could not name them if she was asked. Not that anyone would ask.

She rarely ever saw people anymore. Very few ever came into the UnicornÕs Forrest, most had forgotten it had existed.

It was the one of the few pieces of the old world left.

Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever
But the earth and sky
It slips away, all your money wouldn't
Another minute buy

Sometimes she hated her immorality and she wished that L'r and Schmendrick had listened to Lady AmaltheaÕs plea to let her be, for at least then she would have known true peace.

Because her time as the Lady Amalthea had taught her that no immortal creature could ever know the true meaning of peace, joy, sorrow, regret, beauty...

A Unicorn was the most beautiful creature in the world, but they never changed. They never grew old, never died, never truly felt, and for those reasons mortals were more beautiful.

They knew the true meaning of so many emotions and because of it they were more beautiful than any immortal creature could ever realise.

Dust in the wind, all we are is
Dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind

Still, her last words to Schmendrick had been true. Her joy that her own kind was back would be with her forever and only one sorrow would be with her that long and she was actually thankful for it.

It hurt, but she now knew the meaning of regret and of love. She would carry the memory of the brave prince with her always and of the Lady Amalthea who had loved him.

He would be the one of the few mortals who would never be forgotten, because she would remember him forever.

And maybe that was one of the benefits of being what she was. Even after the rest of the world was dust in the wind, she would remember him, all of them.

The Unicorn is the only creature that lasts forever and the Unicorn never forgets.

The End
