disclaimer- You know the drill DB and some other people own the characters, yadda yadda yadda. They're not mine. Don't sue. I have no money, anyway.
Author's Note- I know that Renee's the devil and I'm supposed to hate her, but even though I don't want her to be with Harm for shipperish reasons, I've started to feel a little bit bad for her. She's annoying, but occasionally she shows that yes, she is human, after all. Here's my fic to show that vulnerable side of her. She really is a strong character...
Renee sat alone in a dark room, staring with red eyes out the window at the storm. She turned her tear stained face to the door when Bud knocked.
Maam, would you like some coffee?
She tried to smile.
Sure, Bud. Thanks.
She took the cup and held it in her hands, looking down into the dark liquid. She tried not to, but she started crying again.
Bud, not knowing what to do, started to leave, but turned back. Standing as though uncertain of himself, he opened his mouth, then shut it again.
You know Maam, he's going to come back. The Commander has been in bad situations before, but he always pulls through. He will this time.
Renee's tortured eyes told him she knew he wasn't half as certain as he sounded.
All I can think, Lietenant, is that everyone's luck runs out at some point.
She stopped talking for a moment, returning her eyes to the cup of coffee.
I love him. I know everyone thinks I'm a joke, but I do. Is that so hard to believe? And now I'll never be with him again...
Bud, kind hearted, yet ever unsure of himself, took a step forward, then, deciding on a course of action, he sat down in the chair beside her and, setting her untouched coffee on the window sill, took her hands into his.
Speaking slowly, hesitantly as was his manner with serious issues he said, I don't think you're a joke, maam.
He paused for a short moment, then continued.
I have to admit, a lot of us at JAG were surprised when you and Harm started dating. You're so different from the type of woman we've seen him with before. But none of his relationships with those women worked out. And here you are, still, so what we thought in the beginning be damned.
It's not so hard to believe you love him, because he loves you too. So don't talk like that- Commander Rabb is going to be back. You will see him again.
For the first time since she said she loved Harm, Renee looked up.
You're very sweet, Bud. Harm's lucky to have a friend like you. But you're also half blind.
He may care about me, in fact, I'm pretty sure he does. But I didn't say I wouldn't see him again. I'm not sure I will, but knowing Harm, he's got as good of a chance of getting through this as anyone.
But it was her he was coming back to. Not me. I'll never be with him again because I won't allow myself to continue loving someone who's relationships will never work out, because he's in love
here she paused and looked out the window again
with someone else.
She got up and started walking out of the room, and a befuddled Bud stood up to go after her, then faltered.
"Renee..."
She turned her head back to look at him, then smiled a sad smile and walked out of the room.
