Prologue

Palm Beach, August 1999

Rita Lorenzo walked across a cemetery in the sweltering August sun. It
was a bittersweet day for Rita. She was visiting her husband's grave for
perhaps the final time.
She came upon her husband's tombstone which held the inscription:

Christopher Lorenzo
Loving husband, friend, father
Killed in the line of duty
December 10, 1995

Rita knelt down by the grave and gently touched the raised letters on the
tombstone as she'd done for most of the last four years.
"Hey Sam," she spoke using the nickname she and Chris used to call each
other.
"Everybody's fine. Cap's got his job back, thank goodness. Frannie's
fine; doctor's telling her to be careful after her heart attack a couple
months ago."
She closed her eyes fighting the tears as she'd had for the better part
of four years. She could still hear the hail of bullets that fatally slammed
into her husband from the backseat of their car just minutes after being
rescued from mobster Montoya. She could see the way Chris looked in the
hospital, the love in his eyes. She'd remember always the long beep as
doctors futilely tried to save her Chris's life and finally pronounced him
dead. Her life changed irrevocably that day.
"Little Christopher's fine, he's becoming more and more like his daddy
everyday," Rita said of her and Chris' son Christopher Lorenzo, JR. Born six
months after Chris' death.
After Chris' death, Rita roamed aimlessly, lost and without the anchor
that she'd had with Chris. She'd visited Chris's dad in Philadelphia,
trekked across country and ended up visiting her look - alike cousin Alex
Riker in California.
Rita shook her head. She couldn't go back and change the past, as much
as she badly wanted too. She missed Chris badly, but couldn't go back and
alter things. It wasn't as if people came back from the dead.....
She took a deep breath and began to speak again, "I've got something to
tell you. I've got a job offer today. Police commissioner of a small town
in upstate New York. I think it would be helpful to Christopher, so I'm
going to take it."
"I'm leaving tonight for Port Charles, so I'm hear to say goodbye for
awhile. Wish me luck."
Rita kissed her hand, and placed it lovingly on Chris' tombstone. "I love
you Sam."
She stood up and walked away, away from Chris, away from all the memories
and experiences she'd had in Palm Beach, looking to a new future in Port
Charles.
She knew even if the town was a good environment for her son, the first
few months were going to be hard for her. She'd be thrown to the wolves
immediately.
A bomb exploded on a yacht a few months ago, killing her predecessor, Mac
Scorpio, and several of Port Charles prominent families and citizens. The
tragedy was rumored to be mob - related. It was thought to be a retaliation
against returning local mobster Sonny Corinthos, who ironically along with
his associate Jason Morgan, got away from the explosion with hardly a
scratch.
God help both Corinthos and whoever his rival is, if it truly turns out
to be mob related, Rita thought.
Rita got into the car and prepared to drive out of a huge chapter in her
life. Christopher, Jr., would stay with Chris' dad Benny in Philadelphia
until Rita got settled and found a place for her and her son to live.
"Goodbye Chris," Rita said starting the car toward the airport, where a
flight was waiting to take her to a new life in Port Charles.

Somewhere in Port Charles

He dreamed of her again. A dark - haired angel with green eyes.
