"Why Mikos Have Seishi"
a quick bit of silliness by Ryuen
~ ~ ~
"Okay. Now, let's try this just ONE more time."
The violet-haired eighteen-year-old took a long step back, turned to gaze up at Hotohori's private balcony. "Okay, Tasuki!" he exclaimed. "Let it go!"
Grinning widely, Tasuki nodded and--after just a moment of measuring and angling, released the bundle. Anchored by a thick length of rope, the heavy bundle of clothing and weighty robes soared down from the balcony, hit the end of the line at about three feet off the ground, and went soaring in a straight, speedy line towards the lone figure standing in the center of the palace walkway...
*THUD*
Miaka went crashing to the ground, landing on her back with a surprised yelp of pain.
Nuriko let out an exasperated sigh, walked quickly to the girl's side. He extended a slim hand, helped Miaka to her feet. "You almost had it that time," he encouraged, managing a thin, wincing smile. "Did you think about what we talked about? About focusing and concentrating and--most importantly--not standing there with your mouth hanging open waiting for someone to save you?"
The girl nodded...then, sighed, leaned her back against the nearby wall. "I don't know what's wrong with me, Nuriko," she lamented. "I see it coming at me, and I KNOW I should move..." She sighed. "But, I just can't! No matter what happens, I just stand there and stare at it! I guess maybe 'cause someone's always been there to save me before things hit me...I dunno." Suddenly, though, Miaka brightened, stood straight and brought her hands into fists before her. "Let's do it again! I'll try really hard this time!"
Nuriko grinned. "Okay." He turned, lifted the roped bundle into his thin arms. "Tasuki? Ya ready? We're gonna try it again."
Tasuki let out a howl. "AGAIN!? C'mon, Nuriko, we've been doin' this for, like, four @(#$&@$ hours already!! I gotta go to the @#(*&$ bathroom!"
"Just one more time...right Miaka?"
The girl nodded. "Un! This time...this time I'll get it right for sure!!"
The flame-haired bandit sighed. "Right," he muttered.
"Okay. Miaka, you ready?"
"Hai!"
Nuriko grinned. "Okay...now, you're going to jump out of the way this time, right?"
"Hai!"
"And, you're going to NOT stand there and wait for someone to save you, right?"
"Hai!"
"Okay, good. Tasuki, let it go!"
Swoooooooooooooooooooooooooooosh. *THUD*
Nuriko sighed, watching as Miaka again began to pick herself up from the ground. "This," he muttered, "must be why Mikos have seishi..."
Once Miaka had brushed herself off and was again standing in the center of the walkway, looking determined and a little bruised, Nuriko stepped forward, tossed the bundle back up to an irritated-looking Tasuki. "Okay," he sighed. "Let's try it again..."
