A/N- I know it's yet another "Evelyn's thoughts on all the madness" story, which is fast becoming a PH cliché, but just hear (read) me out. This is my angsty take on it all.
Empty Reflections
The sky was awash in delicate swirls of pink and gold, tangerine and amethyst. Seagulls called back and forth to each other, their caws enhancing the sound of the waves pounding on the shoreline.
Evelyn stared sightlessly out onto the expanse of ocean before her. All she could think of was the broken mirror that was her life.
Everything had gone wrong. Everything. She felt like she was falling headfirst through the heavens, with no way of telling when she would hit the ground.
First, Rafe had gone off to England in his insane thirst to become a hero. Then he had crashed, and her world had gone into an uproar. As far as she knew, Rafe was gone, and he wasn't ever coming back.
Then, in her foolishness, she had turned to Danny for comfort. Her thirst for a shoulder to cry on had spiraled into a craziness that haunted her even know.
She loved Danny. She truly did. But she regretted how things had started, and how they had ended. She felt guilty for allowing herself to get caught up in the moment.
Then, all in one day, she had found herself pregnant, learned that Rafe wasn't dead at all and he was quite alive and well, regained him for a few short moments only to loose him again, and almost lost Danny into the bargain.
Then the Japanese had bombed the harbor and she had to deal with the flood of wounded and dying that had come into the hospital. She shuddered as she remembered the expressions of pain and anguish and defeat on the faces of those dying men. And she had lost Betty, the youngest nurse on the staff who had her entire future ahead of her.
Then Rafe and Danny had gone on that crazy mission to Tokyo….
Evelyn cut off that line of thought. She knew that therein lied only pain, and loss, and the pure terror that had flooded her when she learned that she would have to live the rest of her life without him.
She felt for Rafe, but he wasn't Danny. Rafe had run away and broken her heart. Danny had been there. Danny had saved her heart, had become the only man she could ever imagine being with.
But now, she had been shattered again.
She had to let Rafe think that she still loved him. He went through so much for her, at least she could let him be in her life.
But inside, she would always be a broken mirror, with each fragment reflecting a man with warm brown eyes, an infectious smile, and a heart that, once upon a time, had completed hers.
Evelyn let herself cry as she watched the sky fade to deep blue. Her tears reflected the light, like tiny mirrors. But the reflections, like the ones in her heart, were empty as the endless expanse of sky before her.
She cried for those empty reflections….
