Author Notes: This was a writing assignment that was given to my old 9th grade English class. Since for some strange *************reason I kept it, I figured 'why not post it?' Anyway, please R/R. Thanks!

*

The company of the Ring

Fled from Balin's tomb

Ores were pursuing

Through the darkened gloom

*

Down the unlit staircase

The weary heroes stumbled

While approaching the stair's base

The drums continued to rumble

*

Ahead in the darkness

Flickered glowing red light

The temperature rose with the brightness

And the fellowship slowed its flight

*

In the Second Hall

A great gorge ran deep

Fire would break your fall

But you would be theirs for keeps

*

The Bridge of Khazad-dum

Narrow and made of stone

Here Gandalf faced his doom

And opposed the Balrog alone

*

A shadowy creature of fire

The Balrog raised its flaming sword

To battle was its great desire

And a fight was its reward

*

Gandalf on his staff sustained

His sword, Glamdring, in hand

To the Balrog, he proclaimed

You cannot cross this span!

*

On the bridge they fought

With swords of red and white

To the loser death would be brought

The fire would be its blight

*

Stepping back Gandalf smote the bridge

The Balrog screamed its last breath

Gandalf stood on the fissure's edge

And the devilish monster fell to its death

*

Up from the abyss came the Balrog's whip

To wrap around Gandalf's knees

The wizard fell and could find nothing to grip

Fly, you fools! was his last decree
