Inklings.
They were in the Den. No change there then, Tommy often felt that he knew Merton's refuge from the outside world better than his own home. He smiled slightly, the thought was equally disturbing and almost, what comforting? He'd never had a friend that he felt this unconcered about spending so much time with. Merton's sigh from behind the computer screen caused him to cross the room and stand behind him.
"What'cha looking for?" Tommy put his hand's on his friend's shoulders as he leant closer to the screen and caught a whiff of eau-de-Merton. Most people find Patchouli a little noxious, not him, it was part of Merton and he kinda liked it.
"A cure for your lycanthropy of course, I know you hate it getting in your way. But so far, nothing, sorry." He sighed. Tommy had to admire him for trying so continuously but he hated to see his friend so despondent.
"Doesn't matter buddy, hey it's a pain in the ass but we've got plenty of time and it's not so bad. After al, without it we wouldn't have much to talk about would we!"
Merton smiled, even though Tommy's tone had been light hearted, they both knew that was the basic truth of it. Not that he didn't enjoy Tommy's company but the circumstances were a little strange, even he had to admit that. He dreaded the day Tomy found another equally understanding person whose company he preferred. He frowned at the screen, man those rogue thoughts were creeping him out. Sure Tommy was his friend but thinking stuff like that made him feel he was being a little too clingy. With a sigh he stretched and pushed away from the computer, bumping into Tommy in the process and causing him to stumble. Only then did he realise that Tommy had been standing there the whole time, his hands resting gently on his shoulders.
"Woah, sorry Tommy, didn't mean to get you there!" Merton jumped to his feet to apologise.
"Hey no problem, I've been hit with far more force than that on the football field believe me!"
"Well, I was gonna leave it there before I go square-eyed."
"Yeah, good choice!"
A slightly awkward silence briefly descended, as if something else wass supposed to happen and neither could remember what it was. Tommy broke it,
"So, see you in school tomorrow then O.K?"
"Yeah, bye Tommy" replied Merton with a smile.
It wasn't until Tommy was walking away that he recognised the silence and realised that Merton probably wouldn't. It was a date silence, and the thought worried him.
