This was my first TXF fic - a short one. Anyway, I wrote this at least six years ago - so I was not sharp with the wordy tools, OK...
FAIRE DES COURSES
Amanda Urlen was shopping in the frozen meats section when
she came across an item not on her list. He was rather small - but
cute she was quick to notice. He stood there in a uniform looking
rather sullen, with a basket and list. The superstore vultures
were already hovering. Amanda circled once and then dived for the
kill.
"Prozac's in the third aisle." she said.
He looked up at here with a slightly bemused and annoyed expression. This was gonna be a toughie, she thought.
"You look a little lost."she added with her 2die4 smile.
"I am." he said quietly
"When was the last time you came shopping?"
He seemed to weigh his answer as he gave it.
"Not since...well, not in a long time. It is not for me."
Amanda almost frowned. Not for him? Damn, was this a conspiracy or what! All the cute guys taken? No way!?
"Shopping for your girlfriend?" she ventured.
"No. For my landlord." he seemed to want to get away now, but that was not on Amanda's agenda.
"Oh!" she felt relieved for a moment, but then checked "Close friends are you?"
"He and his wife are helping me out of a tight spot." He
started to walk away.
"I could help you with your list if you want, I don't bite
you know." Well not unless you want me too, she thought.
He stopped and turned, considering the idea.
"OK." he said.
The shopping was almost done and Amanda still knew little
about him.
"So you work with animals, Eugene, that must be nice." she
was still admiring the uniform fit.
"I like it."
He seemed unaffected by her, so - as they were at the
checkout - she was more direct.
"You know, I could cook dinner for you one time - tonight, if
you are interested. My old boyfriend used to love lamb's liver,
like it was going out of fashion! I still have some in the
freezer, it would be no problem - if your landlord doesn't mind
you being a little late?"
"Liver?" he replied, looking at the floor - his eyes were
yellow.
He's being shy she thought as he looked down - how cute!
"You like liver, Eugene?" she asked, as if she could not
sense she had hit a weak spot.
"Yes."
The shopping paid for they walked to their cars in the
parking lot.
"Nice van, I guess you need it for your work. Just follow my
car and we'll be there in a tick. Are you OK Eugene?"
He was looking at another car not far from his van. A man
with dark hair in a trench coat waved back.
"Do you know him, Eugene? Eugene!"
He had climbed into his van, having hastily thrown the
shopping in the front seat. He turned on the ignition.
"Wait a minute! Eugene! What about dinner?"
Leaning out of the window he said grimly: "Perhaps...some
other time."
In a swirl of dust he drove off. Amanda stared daggers at the
mystery man in the car - who shrugged smiling and then drove off
in pursuit.
"Damn! It almost worked this time too! What is it with the
IRS these days! People are squeezed tight enough for money as it
is!"
Back to icecream and old movies, she thought, why nobody was
safe anymore!
