Last Goodbyes
By: Raven Littrell
Spock looked around his bare room on Vulcan for what was to be the last time for years. He was leaving Vulcan to join Starfleet. He had not yet said his farewells with his mother, Amanda. As for his father, Sarek, no good-bye's would be needed.
Sarek had dearly, or as dearly as a Vulcan could, wished for Spock to follow in Sarek's footsteps, to go the Vulcan Science Academy and become a diplomat. Spock had had his own ideas. Though Spock would never admit to it, the badgering of Vulcan children and the pressure Sarek put on him tested his emotional balance. He was, after all, half human.
With the tiniest undetectable sigh, Spock gathered up the few belongings he was taking with him and left the room. In the outer hallway, Spock saw Sarek in the main room. Mentally making sure that the Vulcan mask was on his face, Spock proceeded into the main room.
Amanda was waiting in the main room, a look of deep sorrow on her face. When Spock entered the room, she threw her arms around him, tears streaming from her eyes. Not knowing what to do, Spock simply stood stiff, not returning the hug or declining it. Amanda looked at him, her eyes puffy.
"Spock, are you sure you want to do this?" she asked, already knowing his answer.
"Mother, I do not fit in on Vulcan. I must find where I will," he responded, emotionlessly. Amanda wiped her eyes and pulled back, looking him in the face.
"Yes, of course. It is only..." Amanda choked on the word, "logical." Spock nodded and headed out the door, without so much as a word for Sarek. Amanda walked to the door with him and stood in the open doorway, watching Spock's retreating back. "Spock!" she called. He turned around.
"Yes?" Spock asked. Amanda held up her hand in the Vulcan greeting.
"Live long and prosper, Spock."
"Live long and prosper, Mother," Spock stated, returning the sign. Then he left. Amanda stood in the door until he was out of sight in the Vulcan city. Sarek stood stock still in the room behind her, not looking out the door. Amanda turned on him.
"You, you... Vulcan! How dare you! You've driven off our son with your Vulcan ways and stubbornness!" Tears erupted from Amanda's eyes and she ran to Sarek. Burying her face in his chest, she began to beat on his chest with her fists, shaking visibly. Sarek didn't move to stop her for a while.
"My wife, attend," he finally said. She looked up at him and joined their fingers in the traditional manner. Though the future looked bleak, Amanda knew instinctively that someday, the rift between Sarek and his son would heal.
*okay, i know this is like, majorly short! this is one of the only two short stories i've ever written, so be nice! i usually can't keep a story short! well, hope u liked it! please r&r! c yas!*
