Uh-Oh…

A "Strong Medicine" Fan Fiction

It was another day at the Ritten House Woman's Health Center. It was the beginning of yet another day, Lu was in chat room and Dana was tending to patients.
Lana comes into the room, "Lu they need you in ER…now."
"Okay girls, same time same place tomorrow." Lu says as she runs out the door.

When Lu got to the OR she saw one of her regular patients.
"Amy what's wrong?" Lu asked when she saw Amy's daughter, Annie on the bed.
"Yesterday Annie hit her head, today she woke up and she was totally off balance. I don't know what happened. She just fell."
"Okay Amy, I'm going to take care of her. Annie is going to be just fine." Lu said walking over to the bed, "What happened here?"
"We don't really know doctor."
"I want a CT right away. Annie, can you hear me?"
"Dr. Delgado?"
"Yeah, Annie we're going to take an x-ray of your brain, and see what made you fall. Okay." Lu looked at her. She could tell this ten-year-old girl was scared to death.
"Okay." Annie said.

Dana was with her patient, Abby Fisher, who was in for a regular check-up.
"Well Abby, you're just fine. You are in tip top shape."
"Thanks Dr. Stowe."
"No problem Abby."

Lu was looking at the Cat Scans. She saw what appeared to be to her a brain tumor at the brain stem, one of the most common cancers among children. Lu didn't want to tell any family that one of their loved ones has cancer, but she had no choice. Annie would need specialists for this. First she needed to tell Amy, Annie, and Amy's husband, Shawn.

When Lu walked into her office she saw Amy and Shawn sitting there, wondering what was going on.
"Amy, Shawn, I think I know why Annie is off balance. This has nothing to do with her fall. Annie has a brain tumor at the stem of her brain. This is one of the most common forms of cancer among children. About 10,000 children are diagnosed with this condition every year."
Amy stared at Lu in disbelief.
"Lu would you still be Annie's doctor in this case?" Shawn asked her.
"No, Annie would need specialists for this. I don't know what course of treatment they'd take. I can get the specialist Annie would have right now if you'd like to meet him."
"Yes I would like to meet him now."
"All right, well I'll have someone page him." Lu walked out of the office to talk to Lana, "Lana, could you page Dr. Herrick for me? I need him to come to my office. Right now."
"Sure Lu."
"Thank you so much."
"May I ask why you need him?"
"Lana, Dr. Patient privilege."
"Right."
"Just a young girl has cancer."
"Oh."
"Thanks again Lana." Lu said walking back into her office.
"He should be coming." Lu told Amy and Shawn.
"Lu what would happen if we chose to take no treatment on Annie?" Amy asked her.
"Well she would die, Amy."
"Dr. Delgado, you wanted to talk to me."
"Yes Dr. Herrick, This is Amy and Shawn Johnson. They are the parents of Annie, the little girl with a brain tumor."
"Ah yes." He said looking at them, "Well I looked at Annie's cat scans and I've decided I can try to remove some of the tumor, since this is at the brain stem it makes this procedure so much more risky."
