Remember the Rose

The sun had just set. The rising moon was beginning to shed its silver light over the land. The air was beginning to cool, but was still warm from the heat of the day.

Serena sat waiting in the garden. Darien should be there any minute. She didn't know why he wanted to meet her there. Earlier that evening she had received his message telling her to meet him there at sunset.

Darien slowly walked along the moonlit path that threaded its way through the rosebushes. He didn't stop to admire the beauty around him. He was thinking about Serena. Serena with her clear, blue eyes and long, golden hair. He loved her, and never wanted to leave her.

Serena looked up and saw Darien approaching. She smiled and stood to welcome him. He smiled back and motioned for her to sit by him near the fountain.

She sat down beside him and said, "Hi, Darien. What did you want to tell me?"

"Serena," he answered, "I love you and I can't bear to leave you."

"I love you, too," she said.

"Serena, I have to go to the U.S."

"But, why?"

"I've been offered an important job. It pays extremely well."

"I understand."

Darien reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, white, velvet box. "This is for you," he said as he handed it to her.

She took the box and opened it and there on the white velvet lining, lay a ring. The band was made of gold and there was a small, diamond rose on it. Serena gasped, "It's beautiful, Darien."

"Serena, will you marry me?" he asked.

She looked up into his crystal clear eyes and saw the sincere look in them. "Of course," she replied.

"I'll come back as soon as I can he promised," he promised.

He reached over and pulled a perfect, red rose off the bush nearest to him and handed it to her. "Remember," he said.

Their kiss was short, but it held enough passion to last a lifetime. Then, Serena silently watched as Darien disappeared into the night.

"Come back soon," she whispered as she gazed at the ring on her finger.
