Crack
The shot echoed in the air.

Hum
The subaudible sound of the green forcefield extending from his fingertips.

That moment saved us.
That moment damned us.

Would it have been better to die by the bullet than to be as we are now? Forced to remain here, be tested upon over and over to the brink of death only to be denied that release by a team of specialists?

Oh we will die. But not yet.

Not until they want us to.
Not until every shred of our dignity is torn from our bodies as the layers of skin and flesh they slice off. Until we are as cold and frozen inside as the ice baths they shock us with. Or the corpses we assume we will become.

We? Yes, we. For amid all this there is still one secret they cannot strip from us.
Our bond, our lifeline, the thing that holds us all together. That thing that keeps us sane in the chaos. Our retreat.

It's amazing what wonders adversity can create. The dreamworld of light mists and caring caresses. Supporting eachother with the only thing we have. Ourselves. Our souls.

King, Princess, Warrior, Queen.
Rank and birth matter little now.
We are one. We are whole.

A chanted litany in my head as they draw yet more of my life's blood.
We are one. We are whole.......
A thundering song in my ears as the light glints off a freshly polished tray of tools.
We are one. We are whole.......
A white noise as I feel no more, slipping from this world.
Their voices join mine in the ether.

We are one and we are whole.
