Angelo tripped over a rock and fell, sucking in his breath as pain stabbed into his leg. He tried not to scream in pain, lest he give away his position. He was so close to completing the mission, and he could not be caught now.

As quietly as he could, he crawled over to a tree to hide himself from view. Carefully, he reached into one of the pockets in his sack and pulled out a Full Restore. It was a healing item he'd taken from the Pokémon Dimension, and he never left home, Miitopia, without stocking up on them.

He carefully rolled up his pants leg and grimaced at the wound on his lower leg. He managed to scrape his leg pretty badly in the fall, and his foot was killing him. He cautiously aimed the Full Restore and pressed the nozzle, spraying his leg with the healing concoction and wincing as the cold spray came into contact with his injured skin. Almost immediately, the wound closed and his leg instantly felt a lot better.

Angelo stood and tested his weight on that leg. He laughed slightly as he realized there was no pain, and it felt like he never even fell at all (although the embarrassment of getting bested by a rock still stung).

Immediately after he healed his leg, he heard voices shouting in the distance, along with pounding footsteps. He gasped and pressed himself against the tree again, listening for anyone approaching.

Then he heard a woman's voice, closer than the others, ask, "Any sign of the intruder?"

His heart slammed against his chest, demanding to be let out so it could run away. The voice wasn't too close, but the person would still be in full view of the tree he was hiding behind. He needed to be careful how he pulled his next move.

Another voice, also female, answered back, "He must've gone this way, I'm sure of it."

It didn't take a genius to know that the "intruder" they were talking about was Angelo.

Hesitantly, he reached down and opened the sack that was slung over his shoulder. Inside, a glowing orb shone bright with every color imaginable. Two black lines crossed through it, forming the symbol of this dimension.

The people here called it a Smash Ball, and it was the reason Angelo was in this mess.

He journeyed through various dimensions, collecting souvenirs from each one to remind him of his experiences. This time was no different. Unfortunately, the Smash Ball apparently contained incredible power, and the people of this dimension didn't want him to have that. If they hadn't come at him with flaming swords, raging dragons, blasters blazing, deadly magic, flashing fists, and explosives, he could've explained that he just collected things from various dimensions and that he wasn't going to use it for any destructive purposes. But the people here didn't exactly seem like the diplomatic type, especially to outsiders.

He realized he was staring at the Smash Ball for too long and closed the sack. He honestly felt as if he could stare at the shifting colors for hours, but now was not the time. He needed to move.

Angelo looked around, trying to plan his escape. The two people behind the tree were still far enough away that if he ran now, he might escape. Unfortunately, he recognized the voices of the two women, and he knew he wouldn't be able to get away in time. He needed a distraction,

He glanced down and noticed a rock by his foot, and an idea came to his head. As quietly as he could, he reached down and picked it up. He looked to the left and noticed a faded path going through the woods. If he threw it in the other direction, he could hopefully distract them and get away before they realized what happened.

Angelo took a deep breath and aimed in the direction he wanted. With an overhead toss, he threw the rock away from the tree and away from the direction of the path he saw. He went back to his original position and waited as the clack of the rock hitting the ground echoed through the area.

One of the women said, "Did you hear that?"

The other one replied, "You go that way, Zelda. I'll go right."

He waited another second, then risked a glance around the tree. He tried not to gasp as he saw the two women who were slowly approaching the tree where Angelo threw the rock. One of them had a white dress with pink accents and pale-blond hair, confirming her to be Zelda. The other had a yellow sword and long blond hair as well, darker than Zelda's. It took a second for Angelo to remember her name...Mythra. She was the one he was most worried about. She was fast, both in battle and on foot, and would most definitely catch up to Angelo if he moved too slow.

"We do not wish to hurt you," Zelda called to Angelo, not knowing he was elsewhere. "We just want the Smash Ball back and you will be free to go. Trust us."

Mythra grunted. "He'll be lucky we don't let Ridley at him when we catch him."

"Mythra, not helping," the other Fighter whispered.

The threat terrified Angelo. He'd only been in this dimension for a few days, yet he'd seen Ridley in action. That dragon would gladly tear him apart if given the chance.

Angelo watched as the two Fighters continued to close in on the tree. Just a few more steps and he'd be able to make his getaway.

He watched as Mythra heaved a sigh. "Come on, kid," she said. "We've got you surrounded. Just come out now and we'll go easy on you."

Zelda gave the swordswoman an irritated look. "Maybe we shouldn't threaten the intruder when we're so close to catching him." she said.

Mythra growled in frustration. "That's it! Come here!" she shouted as she jumped around the tree to find...nothing.

"Wha...w-what?" she said, flabbergasted.

That's when Angelo made his move. He pushed off the tree and started sprinting down the path.

He only made it a few yards before something heavy slammed down in front of him.

Angelo was knocked back and fell hard on his rear end, stunned by the impact. He shook his head and looked up, then gasped as he beheld the dragon in front of him.

Immediately, he recognized the creature. It wasn't Ridley, thank goodness. It was Charizard, a dragon-like Pokémon Fighter.

The Pokémon roared at Angelo, the sound echoing throughout the woods. On its back, Red, its Trainer, pointed at Angelo and shouted, "There he is!" to Zelda and Mythra.

Angelo's heart jumped as he quickly got to his feet. He turned and ran in the other direction while he reached into one of the pockets in his sack, searching for something, anything that might help him.

He didn't get very far before Mythra intercepted him, dashing right in front of him with her sword at the ready and causing him to falter. That one moment of hesitation allowed Charizard and Zelda to surround him as well, forming a circle around him.

Angelo looked around at the Fighters, trying to stay calm. On the outside, he looked completely neutral, but his heart was racing faster than Sonic running to the nearest chili dog stand. He was absolutely terrified.

"Welp," he said with false nonchalance, "I guess you caught me. I just cannot believe this happened."

As he spoke, his hand grasped an object in his sack that he forgot he had. He almost sighed out loud when he realized what it was, but he managed to keep cool.

Zelda stepped forward a little. "You need to give us back that Smash Ball. It is much too powerful for a boy like you," she told him. "We cannot have someone like you freely carrying that thing around."

Angelo shifted his grip on the object in his sack. Charizard must have detected the movement and growled, startling Angelo.

Mythra must have sensed it too. She pointed at his sack. "What do you have in there?" she demanded.

Angelo decided to make his move now. "Just a little surprise. Wanna see?"

In a flash, he pulled out a Bob-omb and held it high. The Fighters all stumbled back in shock.

"Look out!" Red cried.

Angelo took advantage of the surprise and dashed forward, extending the Bob-omb towards Chariard's tail, which had a flickering flame at the end. The fuse lit, giving Angelo about 5 seconds before the thing exploded. He had to get away before that happened.

Angelo pulled something else out of his sack, a small rectangular device out of a pocket he kept especially reserved for this one item. He held it tightly in his hand and sprinted away, holding the Bob-omb to his chest.

He heard someone cry out and run after him. If it was Mythra, he needed to act now.

The Bob-omb started to flash red, an indicator that the small explosive was about to, well, explode. He threw it to the ground directly in front of him and ran past it as it hit the dirt, ready to blow. He knew it worked when the Bob-omb exploded just a second later and he heard Mythra cry out in pain as she was blown sky-high by the blast. Someone behind him shouted, "Mythra!" but he didn't have time to focus on that. He was finally escaping!

Then his attention was directed to the sound of swooping wings above him. He looked up and saw Dark Pit with his Silver Bow in hand, taking aim with a glowing purple arrow made of darkness. Angelo yelped and ducked behind a tree, flinching when the projectile struck the bark.

He fumbled with the small thing in his hand and pressed the button on it, causing the button to change from red to green. The small rectangular device expanded and took on a cylindrical shape, covering Angelo's hand and booting up with many clicks and whirs.

Angelo dove out from behind the tree and aimed his new arm cannon at Dark Pit, firing multiple energy blasts at the dark angel. Dark Pit cried out and flew up to avoid the shots, only to get struck in the left wing. He screamed as he spiraled down and landed in the branches of a tree, still shouting in pain.

Angelo turned and ran, only to hear Dark Pit yell, "Guys, help! He's over here!"

Why couldn't the angel keep his mouth shut?

He couldn't dwell on that for long as he suddenly heard more voices coming from the direction he ran from. He kicked up his speed a couple levels and ran even faster. He needed to be far away from the Fighters to be able to escape.

They were a good distance away from him. Despite that, he knew he wasn't safe, since many of the Fighters didn't even need to be close to hurt him.

This was confirmed when a pale form teleported directly in front of him in a purple flash, causing Angelo to yelp and falter again. It was Mewtwo, a Legendary Pokémon who was feared for his Psychic capabilities.

Angelo quickly pressed a button on his arm cannon, causing the light on it to flash purple. A faint whirring sound came out of it as Angelo dashed forward, trying to get around Mewtwo. The Pokémon extended an arm and tried to stop Angelo with its telekinesis, only for the new Psychic Shield from his arm cannon to stop it. The telekinetic command bounced off the shield and was sent back at Mewtwo. The Pokémon reeled back and clutched its head as its mind was overwhelmed by its own Psychic attack. Angelo allowed himself a small smile and kept running.

Something moved above Angelo. He leaped to the side and heard something land right next to him, in the spot he was in just a second ago. He turned to see Pit standing up and aiming his Palutena Bow at him, drawing a glowing arrow.

Angelo jumped back to bait him, then activated the Echo Reflector on his arm cannon as Pit fired the arrow. The glowing projectile bounced off the reflector and was sent back at the angel, who yelped and jumped to the side. Angelo shut off the reflector and kept running.

The other Fighters were getting closer now, while Angelo was no closer to escaping. He needed a minute to charge up the Portal Blast on his arm cannon so he could get out of here, and he couldn't exactly do that with 80 plus Fighters on his tail.

He charged up his arm cannon and pointed it downwards, blasting himself up into the air and landing on a tree branch. He hoped that this would at least confuse the Fighters as to where he had gone.

Angelo knew it worked when he saw the main force of them running towards him, then pass below the tree he was hiding in. They all stopped and looked around, confused as to where he had gone.

"Where is he?" said one of them, which Angelo recognized as Lucina.

Another Fighter, Ken, shook his head. "He was just here a second ago!"

Angelo took a few deep breaths as the Fighters below him struggled to locate him. He was about to sigh with relief when he noticed one of the Fighters looking suspiciously at the trees. His heart dropped like Hero Kaclang when he realized it was Lucario, the Aura Pokémon. Lucario could sense the auras of other creatures, even through solid objects, so he would have no trouble finding Angelo in the trees.

Lucario's gaze passed over Angelo's hiding spot, and he gasped. "There he is!" the Fighting/Steel Fighter shouted. "In the tree!"

Instantly, Angelo used his arm cannon to blast off, flying to another tree as the one behind him exploded from about a thousand different projectiles being thrown at it.

He landed in another tree as the Fighters below him cried out and pointed at him. Several took flight and flew up to his perch. Angelo aimed his arm cannon and fired, trying to keep the flying Fighters at bay as they swooped at him with various weapons, trying to knock him down. He saw Red on Charizard barrelling towards him, and he decided to use his arm cannon to blast off to another tree to get away.

As he flew through the air, he caught a glimpse of a blue object hurtling at him from below. He only recognized it as Sonic the Hedgehog when it slammed into his midsection, causing him to gasp and fall.

Momentarily stunned, his body reacted almost on its own as he aimed his arm cannon diagonally downward and fired. He was too dazed to properly charge up a shot that would keep him airborne, but this shot would keep him from hitting the ground head-on as well as slow his fall, therefore keeping him from being hurt too badly. He still grunted in pain as he hit the ground and rolled to a stop. Sonic quickly jumped to his feet and ran a few yards away from Angelo, leaving him alone on the ground as he struggled to stand back up.

When he finally regained his footing, he noticed he was surrounded. All the Fighters had formed a circle around Angelo, trapping him in one spot.

The sight of over 80 Fighters gathered around him was the most terrifying thing he had ever seen in his life, even more terrifying than when he'd been chased by Chain Chomps in the Mushroom Kingdom dimension. Every single one of them was ready with various weapons, forms of magic, or simply their fists. Angelo knew he might have to fight his way out of this...but how?

He measured his options. There was no way he could overpower them all. It was suicide to go up against that many. He couldn't exactly run away again, due to the small fact that he was surrounded. Then he decided he could try to talk his way out of this. They needed to understand that he wasn't trying to use the Smash Ball for any destructive or evil purposes. He just wanted to keep it as a souvenir of his time here. This dimension was awesome, with daily battles and epic smackdowns between legendary Fighters from different dimensions. He also couldn't just take something else instead of the Smash Ball. It was the only thing unique to this dimension, so he was intent on taking it with him.

Once again, it was time to act a whole lot more confident than he felt.

"All right, great job, you guys!" he said with a few sarcastic claps, turning his arm cannon back into a small device. "You managed to catch me! Only took, like, all of you at the same time to do it. Guess I'm just that good, huh?"

A Fighter growled in anger and stomped up to Angelo. He recognized him as Ganondorf, judging from his impressive muscular frame and all-around cheerful temper. "Enough, boy!" he practically shouted. "Give us the Smash Ball and pray we don't make you suffer for what you've done! I am tired of your antics!"

Another Fighter stepped forward. It took a second, but Angelo remembered her as Pyra. She and Mythra were apparently two people called the Aegis. He didn't fully understand how it worked, but the two could switch between each other freely, although they were never existent at the same time. If Angelo had to guess, Mythra was badly injured in his escape explosion, so Pyra took her place. Judging from the way Pyra was glaring at him, she wasn't too happy about Angelo hurting her other half (or whatever they were to each other).

"I, for one, do not think we should...do that," she said, sort of getting between Ganondorf and Angelo. "I mean, of course, we still need that Smash Ball back, but we should just let him go afterwards."

Angelo nodded. "Thank you, Pyra. That's exactly what I was thinking. However, what you guys don't seem to understand is that I reeeaaalllyyy wanna keep this thing. I swear I'm not gonna do anything crazy with–"

"Ha! As If we're supposed to believe that!" someone else yelled out.

Angelo shrugged. "Whatever. I'm not leaving this dimension without the Smash Ball."

Ganondorf's eyes narrowed. "Is that a threat?" he asked.

Angelo grinned. "It's a promise."

In a flash, he pressed a button on the watch on his wrist. It immediately began to change, clicking and whirring and elongating into a long metal object. A handle extended outward from the bottom, which Angelo grasped.

Angelo took a fighting stance and faced Ganondorf with his sword, the polished blade gleaming in the sunlight streaming through the trees.

"So!" he said cheerfully. "Who wants to go first?"

Every single Fighter surged forward, and for some reason, Angelo wasn't terrified.

Ganondorf was closest, so of course he was the first to swing at Angelo. The Fighter threw a punch at Angelo's head, which he ducked under. From his crouching position, he jabbed at Ganondorf's leg and sliced it. Not a huge wound, but enough to slow the evil king down.

Ganondorf cried out and stumbled. Angelo jumped up and used his wide shoulders as a springboard to jump away.

80 plus Fighters all converged on one spot and slammed into each other, momentarily stunning them all. Angelo landed on top of one of them–King Dedede, he remembered–and knocked him to the ground (the Fighter made Angelo's landing very soft). His mind raced as he looked around, trying to find a way out of this.

Someone grabbed his arm and yanked him back, throwing him to the floor. For a moment, he was caught in a tangle of bodies and limbs as he tripped multiple Fighters in his fall. A knee hit him in the face, and he was momentarily stunned as he tried to stand back up, his legs feeling like jelly.

All around him, he heard the various cries and shouts of the Fighters as they all tripped over one another, trying to locate Angelo in the confusion. He jumped to his feet, turned his sword back into his watch, and slowly picked his way to the edge of the crowd, shouting a few times to blend in.

He burst out of the crowd and started running again, hoping to put some distance between him and the Fighters. He allowed himself a small smile as got farther and farther from the confused mob. He suddenly stopped and veered to the side, allowing the trees to conceal himself as he began to hear shouts of outraged confusion as to where he had gone.

He just reactivated his arm cannon when something teleported in front of him. He skidded to a halt and caught his breath as he recognized the Fighter before him.

Meta Knight was standing a few yards away from him, holding his golden sword at the ready. Angelo tensed and waited for the masked Fighter to call the others, but he simply stood there.

Then he spoke. "I, unlike the others, actually see reason." He gestured vaguely at the mob, who still hadn't caught on to where Angelo had gone. "I believe you when you say you intend no harm to anyone or anything with the Smash Ball. I am good at reading people. However, I cannot just let you go."

Angelo deactivated his arm cannon and activated his sword again. "Soooo, why are we here?" he replied.

"I believe you are of noble intent. If you say you truly mean no harm, then prove it in a little contest. If you win, you may leave freely, and you will keep the Smash Ball. If I win, well, you must return the Smash Ball to us."

Angelo couldn't believe it. He was about to get away. All he had to do was defeat Meta Knight in battle and he could go.

There was just one problem with that. Meta Knight was no pushover. He was fast and masterful with the sword. Angelo had been watching the masked Fighter in battles and thought he had a good idea of how he fought, but he wasn't 100% sure about this. Was he good enough to beat Meta Knight?

He figured the only thing he could do was try.

"Alright, I accept," he said. "Let's do this!"

Meta Knight jumped backwards and spread his wings, then flew forwards at incredible speed, nearly opening up Angelo's chest with an opening attack. Angelo held up his sword and blocked the slash, causing an audible clang! as their blades clashed. Meta Knight grunted in surprise and pushed with his sword, forcing Angelo back a few feet as they separated. Angelo responded by lunging forward and hitting Meta Knight with a few quick slashes, all of which were blocked. The two swordsmen spent the next few seconds trading blows at the speed of sound, yet it felt like an eternity in the heat of battle. Angelo immediately went on the defensive, trying to gauge the small knight's skills and figure out how he could take him down. Angelo was also extremely skilled with the blade, and he was hoping it would be enough to best the knight.

Angelo quickly took note of Meta Knight's fighting style. The small swordsman struck very fast, but the blows lacked physical strength. This meant that Angelo couldn't do much more than guard himself, but if he found an opening and struck back, he could win this. He just had to be patient.

Meta Knight flew backwards and spun around, forming a small tornado around him. Angelo recognized the move, Mach Tornado, and prepared to guard himself.

Meta Knight zoomed straight at Angelo, only to get deflected by a counterattack from the other swordsman. The force of the attack made Angelo grunt. The masked Fighter was stronger than he let on. Meta Knight flew back, still spinning, and rushed Angelo again. He deflected attack after attack as the Fighter continued to slam into him at high speed for multiple directions.

Somehow, Angelo managed to stay alive under the onslaught. Meta Knight stopped spinning and swung his cape around, disappearing into thin air. Angelo felt movement behind him a second later and spun around almost instantaneously to block the knight's powerful sword slash. He remembered, then, that Meta Knight could use that move, Dimensional Cape, to teleport behind foes. He needed to be more careful.

The two of them resumed trading blows again, their swords clashing and clanging in a frenzy of slashes. Angelo wasn't the least bit tired. In fact, he'd never felt more alive. The thrill of battle was just that exhilarating.

At last, Meta Knight made his fatal mistake. The masked Fighter slashed, and Angelo's sword got caught in one of the jagged branches of Galaxia, stopping him cold. Taking advantage of this, Angelo yanked his blade to the side, taking Meta Knight's sword with it and wrenching it from the knight's grip. The golden sword flew to the side and landed somewhere to Angelo's right, much to Meta Knight's visible despair. Before he could react, Angelo reached out, quick as lightning, with his hand and grabbed Meta Knight by the mask. He lunged forward and shoved him down against the ground, holding the small knight down with his hand and keeping his own sword pointed at him with the other.

The woods were deadly quiet then, and the only sound was the heavy breathing coming from both swordsmen.

It was only then that Angelo noticed the other Fighters surrounding them.

They had apparently noticed Angelo and Meta Knight's battle and were watching with eager anticipation. They had formed a ring around the two and were waiting for the victor.

Now that Angelo had won, he wasn't sure what they would do now.

One of them cautiously stepped forward. Angelo recognized him as Chrom. The Fighter's sword gleamed as he approached Angelo, who watched him carefully.

Chrom stared at him for a long time, apparently assessing the boy in front of him who had somehow bested one of the strongest warriors in this dimension.

The swordsman seemed to allow himself a small smile as he said, "You should stay."

That was so unexpected, so random, Angelo almost dropped his own sword.

"What?"

His smile widened a little. "You have skill, young one," he said. "We see that now. If you stay, we could solve this little matter of the Smash Ball. It stays here, and so would you, so you would not have to worry about it anymore. I have seen you on the sidelines before. You've been watching our battles and matches with great interest, and awe, I might add. You would fit right in with us if you stayed."

Angelo's heart jumped. Everyday battles with these legendary Fighters from other dimensions? That sounded amazing.

Angelo cleared his throat. "After considering your offer for a grand total of a second and a half, I accept. This place is amazing!"

Chrom smiled even wider. "Outstanding!"

Meta Knight let out a small groan and shifted under Angelo's grip. "That is great, but can you please release me at once now that we have finished?"

Angelo laughed and let go of the other Fighter, allowing him to stand up and recover.

At that moment, the tension broke and the other Fighters all came up to Angelo, offering their own welcoming statements and congratulations. Angelo couldn't believe he would be one of them now.

A single Fighter, Terry, punched him in the arm and said, "That was amazing, kid."

Angelo nodded. "What can I say? The heat of battle is that exciting."

Terry grinned. "That's one thing everyone here agrees on. You know what this means?"

Angelo shook his head.

"It means you're a Fighter now."

Angelo's eyes widened as that sunk in. A Fighter…I like it, he thought to himself.

"Come on!" another Fighter shouted. "The kid's gotta have his first official match with us!"

Everyone cheered and practically raised Angelo on their shoulders as they made their way out of the woods and back to a massive house in the distance. Angelo remembered that that was the place where the Fighters all lived.

Where I'll be living now, he thought with a smile.
