A flash erupted from the Fenton portal, and Sam instinctually grabbed Tucker's arm in alarm when the sizzling and crackling started. Something had gone terribly, terribly wrong with the portal, and all they could hear were the agonizing screams of Danny who had just gone inside. Sam thought a fire was going to start the way it came alive with light and crackling electricity.
She thought they were all going to die.
But when the portal went dark, and the screaming had stopped, Sam and Tucker were still standing there, alive, shaking like an earthquake had ended the whole world.
It was Tucker who moved first. Sam couldn't bear to look – not when it had been her idea.
"Danny?" Tucker called quietly.
The entire basement was dark now, taken out by the portal's malfunction that ended in a blackout – maybe even the whole street had been struck by darkness. After that, and the screaming, there was no way that the Fenton's upstairs wouldn't know that something was wrong.
"Danny?" Tucker called again, louder this time, but there was no response from within the dead portal.
There was nothing.
Sam sank to her knees which scraped along the rough floor of the basement in the Fenton's lab. Her hands found her face and even in darkness she covered her eyes so she would not have to imagine what Tucker was about to find.
"Oh my god," Tucker breathed, his voice quivering. "Sam!"
"No," she cried.
"Sam!"
"No, no, I can't – Tucker please, I can't-"
"He's alive!"
Sam dropped her hands and jumped to her feet.
"What?"
"Look he's… well, he's alive."
Sam squinted in the pitch darkness, feeling her way to the open maw of the portal doors, and in the gentle flickering of exposed wires and some sort of green glow, she could see the dark form of Danny on the ground; he was moving.
His hand was slowly curled inward toward his chest, as though he were withholding cries of pain, and his spine was folded into the fetal position. She could also see that his hair had gone snow-white, and the green glow she had seen before was coming from his eyes. His terrible, wide, eyes.
"Danny," she breathed, reaching for him, but Tucker grabbed her wrist roughly and shook his head.
"Don't," he said. "He could be in serious pain and if you touch him before help comes-"
"Help. We need to call for help, Tucker! What are we going to tell his parents?"
"I don't know, Sam!"
Danny shivered on the ground, unblinking, his eyes staring out into the blackened basement as though he could no longer see his friends; like he wasn't seeing anything. He seemed like he was in shock – like he'd seen his own death and had just come back from it.
"Danny, please," Tucker sniffed. His voice wavered and Sam thought there might be tears coming from his eyes. "Come on, man, I need you to talk to me…"
The sound of footsteps overhead thundered, and Tucker finally released Sam's wrist.
"His eyes," she whispered. "Tucker, his eyes aren't blue anymore… his hair, his…"
Tucker shook his head, the soft green glow making his dark skin look sickly and wrong. He had no answers for her, and it seemed that everything all at once was over.
Then the sound of the door to the basement being flung open made them both jump, and almost as if it had startled Danny, too, he blinked, and the green glow was gone. His hair dimmed until it returned to its normal black, and his soft blue eyes finally, and slowly, closed.
"Danny, Tucker, Sam," Mrs. Fenton called, her voice harsh and full of concern. "What's going on down here, we heard screaming and the lights went out!"
"Did you kids see a ghost?" was Mr. Fenton's immediate follow up to his wife's question. His voice was filled with excitement, rather than fear for anyone's safety.
Sam and Tucker could only look at one another as the Fenton's flashlights cascaded over the scene in the basement. Danny had gone into the portal looking like himself, and had come out another way, but suddenly looked dead and normal on the cold, metal floor. They didn't know what to say – they weren't even sure it had all been real.
"Danny!" came the screams of his parents once they approached.
Sam and Tucker both backed away as they were assaulted with questions, accusations, demands to call for help. Barraged with the tears of Mrs. Fenton as she held her son who would not open his eyes. Shocked with Mr. Fenton's loud relief when he put an ear to Danny's chest and found a heartbeat. Of Jazz, Danny's sister, who yelled from the top of the stairs that she already called 911 and that they should be prepared for people to arrive.
But all that really happened to Sam and Tucker in that moment, as the generators kicked on and the paramedics arrived, was the realization that they couldn't let go of one another's hands, and that they both had gone ghostly pale, and that somehow, they both knew that this would change everything.
Are the author's notes (A/N:) so out of style now? I've been on this site since 2011 and don't know anymore xD
I know I'm almost exclusively a Teen Titan fic author, but I really wanted to get into the Danny Phantom universe and kind of... rewrite the show. I know that a lot of DP fans aren't happy with the way that the show ended. It is no secret that there was a different way that the story was going to go until a new writer was brought in (under ambiguous circumstances). Therefore I'm kind of doing a "script doctor" or fix-it-fic of the entire show, sort of rewriting episodes or just expanding the lore and adding a few OC ghosts and characters to make the world seem bigger and more complex.
I totally understand if you come here for the Teen Titans fics, and rest assured those will continue, but if you'd like to take a weird little ghostly trip with me, I'd love to have you. I'm not sure how long this is going to go, but my instincts tell me LONG, so if you would like some mini Teen Titan shorts and one-shots in between DP chapters please leave a review (but be kind!).
I'm hoping to update either weekly or bi-weekly (since I have a lot of backlog on this fic for you guys) but we'll see if I can hold myself to that.
As always, please review and follow so I know that you're having as much fun as I am!
