The Return of Chara

Prologue

Asriel sat in the bed of golden flowers below the undergrounds entrance, the light of the sun shining dimly on him. "Well Chara, I guess it's finally over." Said Asriel, trying to fight back tears in his eyes as he looked and saw his left arm was reverting to green vines. "Maybe we can finally be together this time… Maybe…" Asriel couldn't finish as tears finally began running down his cheeks.

"Hehehe, who are you talking to?" Asked the voice of a young girl coming from behind Asriel.

Frisk must have come back to try and convince me to leave with her again. Thought Asriel. "I'm about to turn back into Flowey. I was just saying my goodbyes to Chara at her grave." Explained Asriel, but when he turned around, he saw that there was no one there.

"Oh, so this is where Chara was buried." Said the voice of a young boy.

"Yes, I had been wondering that as well. None of the monsters ever mentioned what happened to her body." Said the voice of another young boy.

"Who's there!?" Shouted Asriel as he looked around the seemingly empty cavern. Asriel looked up and gasped as the six human souls that had been trapped in the underground descended around him. Each soul surrounded by a transparent version of each of the fallen children. The soul of justice was a young boy wearing western themed clothes, complete with a cowboy hat and a revolver. The soul of patience was a young girl with short hair that was tied back by a ribbon. The soul of bravery was a young boy with spikey hair, a red headband, and a pair of gloves. The soul of integrity was a young girl, slightly older than the soul of patience and was wearing a ballet outfit. The soul of kindness was a slightly overweight young boy wearing an apron and carrying a frying pan. Finally, the soul of perseverance, still a young boy, but slightly older than the others, he was wearing a heavy coat and glasses, and carrying a book he had been writing notes about the monsters and the underground in. Most notably however, was that each of the spirits now had a pair of wings on their backs. "W-why are you still here?" Asked Asriel.

"I believe I can answer that." Said the voice of the River-person. Asriel turned around saw that the River-person was approaching from the entrance to the ruins. "I'm sure you already know me, but as for why we're all here. Well, we came to help the angel of death in his time of need."

"Why would you want to help me?" Asked Asriel "It's not like I deserve it."

"Well sometimes it's not about what we deserve." Replied the River-person "The six kids around us didn't deserve to meet early graves, but they accepted it. And now we're here to help you get a better ending."

"Ha, and how could you do that?" Asked Asriel "I don't have a soul anymore, and in a few minutes, I'm going to turn back into a sociopathic flower."

"That's why we want to help you Asriel." Said the soul of patience.

"We talked it over with River-person, he wants each of us to give you one sixth of our souls so that you can live again." Continued the soul of justice.

"Wait, you can really bring me back?" Asked Asriel.

"Yes, but…" Started the River-person "There is a slight catch. If you agree, then we will give you a soul, but you must become the new angel of death. This means you won't be able to return to this world unless it's absolutely necessary, and you will be in charge of monitoring the proper passage of souls from this world into the next."

"Oh, so you just need my help. Why would you even choose me for something like that?" Asked Asriel.

"Two main reasons, the first is that not everyone is capable of using the power of death, but you've already shown that you can use it. The second reason, is that we need someone who understands the value of life to fill this job, and you've had to learn the value of life the hard way." Explained the River-person.

"He-he, and what if I don't want your job, or to have to keep living like this?" Asked Asriel with tears in his eyes. "What if I just want to die and be with Chara again?"

"Well then I'm afraid you're in an awfully bad position. Part of the reason why we need a new angel of death is because… Well, we don't have Chara's soul anymore." Explained the River-person. "When you and Chara died, your souls were linked together, but you were pulled back to the mortal world when Alphys injected that dust infused flower of yours with liquid determination. Because your soul and Chara's soul refused to separate, in the end your empty soul container was placed in the flower, while Chara's soul absorbed the power from yours and then just seemed to disappear. The soul container has your consciousness, which is why you remember who you are, but without the rest of your soul you couldn't feel anything anymore. However, there is no way of knowing what absorbing the power of your soul could have done to Chara's. I'm sure her soul is still out there somewhere, but only an angel of death would even be allowed to look for it."

"So, Chara's soul is missing!" realized Asriel. "That means she could have ended up in a worse mess then me! I have to help!"

"Does this mean you'll be the new angel of death?" Asked the River-person.

"Yes!" Agreed Asriel.

"The need to save Chara fills you with justice." Said Justice, causing Asriel's empty soul container to appear and begin filling one sixth up with with yellow energy.

"The time you've held onto Chara fills you with patience." Cheered Patience, adding a sixth of cyan energy to Asriel's soul.

"Facing the fear of losing Chara fills you with bravery." Added Bravery, donating a sixth of his orange energy.

"Risking all you have left to save Chara fills you with integrity." Said Integrity, adding a sixth of blue energy.

"Agreeing to search for Chara's soul fills you with kindness." Laughed Kindness, giving a sixth of his green energy.

"Retaining your feelings for Chara after all the resets fills you with perseverance." Finished Perseverance as the last sixth of Asriel's soul was filled with purple energy.

Asriel expected for his soul to drift back into his body, but instead it entered his golden heart locket which then began to shine brilliantly. When the light subsided, Asriel was back in his hyper-death form, and his left arm was no longer composed of vines. "By the way, how did you know I was here?" Asked hyper-death Asriel to the River-person.

"The same reason I'm always there to pick up passengers who need to get across the underground." Replied the River-person cryptically. "Now, I should show you where you're going to be working from. I'm sure you'll want to start looking for Chara's soul as soon as possible."

As the River-person began walking, Asriel followed closely behind him. No matter how hard it is, no matter how long it takes, I promise I will find you Chara. Thought Asriel. And when I do, I will make sure our souls are never apart again.
