Adventurefest. One of the, if not the, biggest music festival in the world. How Marceline and her band managed to score a spot on the setlist is beyond her. All she knows is one day they got the call after already getting rejected a few months prior. Honestly whether it was sheer luck or due to raw talent, she didn't really care. What she did care about was that they were there, surrounded by so many big names in the music indutry.
Her band wasnt very big or well known just yet. Sure, they sold out in smaller venues, played in front of a few thousand people, but never as something as massive as Adventurefest. The Scream Queens would be playing infront of well over Five-hundred thousand people over the course of 3 weeks. That was more people than she ever could have imagined. Marceline would finally be a true rockstar at the end of these weeks. Well, so she hoped.
So there she sat, hiked up on a huge amplifier. She quietly strummed at her bass, tuning it in the process. She had been zoning out, staring at nothing in particular for the last half hour her band was backstage. She couldn't lie to herself, she was nervous. It wasnt just normal pre-show jitters, no, Marceline was actually scared. She wouldn't call it stage fright, because lets be real, Marceline loved to be on stage. She loved to preform, she loved all the attention.
Maybe she just wasn't ready for this, she should just back out now. It's not too late, she can pack her stuff back in the RV and floor it.
Marceline took in a deep breath to calm her nerves. She couldn't think like that. Her band was here, and they were going to preform. They were going to become rockstars. It'll be fine, totally. She let out all the air in her lungs before hopping down off the amplifier, gently resting her crimson axebass against the side if it.
Her legs felt week, so Marceline decided it would be best to take a short walk around the premises. Her band wasn't even scheduled to start setting up for at least another few hours, she had time to calm her nerves. It was only the first day, afterall. The Screem Queens were scheduled to play at least 4 times through the 3 weeks they were there.
Marceline motioned to her lead quitarist, Keila, that she was going to go for a walk. Though she didn't get very far before a small pink mass colided with her, causing Marceline to go tumbling to the ground.
"Hey! Watch where your goi- oh." The very pink woman looked down at Marceline, face now flushed a bright red. Marceline was very perceptive, taking note with how the short woman immediately seemed to blush. The darker woman gave her an impish smirk as she stood up, wiping her knees with her hands.
When Marceline managed to straighten out her back, she noticed how much she towered over the smaller pink girl. There was at least a six inch difference in their height. She wasnt that tall, she only stood at a five foot and ten inches. This girl was just adorably short.
The pink woman blushed even harder when she looked up at the rocker. She looked familiar to Marceline, but she couldnt pin point exactly how. Pinkie mumbled some illegible apology before running off. Marceline stood there in awestruck as she watched her scurry away.
"Dude, what was that?" Keila appeared out of thin air, placing a hand on Marcelines shoulder. The taller woman flinched at the sudden contact, but quickly calmed when she saw her friend.
"No clue, first she was mad then she got all flustered and ran off. Do you know who that was?" Marceline turned to her quitarist, swatting her hand off her shoulder.
"You're telling me that you had no idea who that was?" Keila looked at her friend with a puzzled look, as if it should be obvious. "Dude, that was Princess Bubblegum!" Keila smacked her friend in the shoulder.
"THE Princess Bubblegum?" Marceline had a look of shock spread on her face. She just ran into Princess Bubblegum. Child actress turned into pop sensation. She was one of the most well known names in the music industry today. Anytime you would turn on the radio, one of her bubbly pop songs would be playing. Practically on a loop, if you ask Marceline. She really wasn't a fan of radio music.
"You better hope she's as nice as everyone makes her out to be, she could destroy our careers before they even started." Keila laughed nervously.
"Yeah, alright Keila. I'm going to go get some fresh air." Marceline took in a deep breath, trying not to think about a certain pretty pink princess ruining her career. "I wont be gone long, promise. I'll be back before we get called into makeup." Marceline smiled at her friend before walking off.
Marceline felt the sun burn her skin as she stepped through the thick curtains separating the back stage and the outside. She took a deep breath, exhaling the warm summer air. It felt musty to her as she looked around, taking in her surroundings.
Adventurefest was no joke. There was only one stage that sat dead center in the middle of the 800 acre plot of land. Behind the stage there were multiple different canopies, currently housing all sorts of equipment. It was entirely fenced off from any fans that might feel bold enough to slip through. Security guards everywhere you looked, checking any and all passes to make sure people were where they were supposed to be. Passed the line of canopies were where all the musicians parked their tour busses and trailers. Marceline noted that there were at least ninety-seven trailers. All ranging from different sizes and brands, some much more bigger and luxurious than others.
The Scream Queens traveled in one RV with a large trailer attached to the back that held all of their equipment and instruments. It wasnt very nice in comparison to most of the others. Her band wasn't very well known as the others were though. It definitely looked out of place next to the shiny black tour bus that was twice its size.
Marceline mindlessly made her way through the parked buses with no destination in mind. It was surprisingly quiet. She was far enough away from the stage now to where the band playing and the screaming fans sounded muffled and far. She heard soft conversations from other preformers waiting for their time, and...what was that? Crying?
The musician furrowed her brows as she stepped closer to the sound. Yeah, it was definitely someone crying. She poked her head around a large bus, seeing a blob of pink sitting by herself. Marceline squinted her eyes as she noticed the woman wiping tears away with her sleeve. To her surprise, it was the one and only Princess Bubblegum.
She contemplated for a moment. She could either walk away and pretend she never saw her, or she could approach the crying woman. She definitely should leave her be, Marceline thought to herself. She was sure someone like Princess Bubblegum would look at Marceline with disgust if she was approached, especially in such a vulnerable state.
Fuck it.
Marceline stepped closer to the bundle of pink. She had been sitting on the ground with her knees up, arms wrapped around them. She hid her face in her legs, not seeing the black haired woman approach. Marceline stopped directly in front of her, feet only inches away from the other.
"Um...hey." Marceline blurted out. Bubblegum whipped her head up, eyes red and puffy. She glared up at Marceline in disbelief, quickly drying her face up from any left over tears. "I'm sorry- I was just taking a walk and I saw you crying and I just wanted to make sure you were okay because I think I would want someone to do the same if it were me but I realize now that I'm probably way out of line and shouldve just let you be oh my god now I'm rambling I'm so sorry." Marcelines face turned red with embarrassment as the beautiful pink woman sat there, staring right at Marceline and not saying a word.
Then she smiled. Princess Bubblegum smiled at her, and oh my god what was that feeling in her chest? She watched as Bubblegum pat the ground next to her, inviting her to sit down. Marceline obliged, collapsing onto the rough grass. She heard a little sniffle come Bubblegum before she finally spoke.
"Marceline Abadeer of The Scream Queens." Bubblegum said bluntly. Marceline looked at her in confusion, because she had never even spoken her name outloud infront of this girl. Bubblegum took note in the confusion coming off the black haired woman. "I recognized you back stage, uh," The pink woman hesitated before continuing, "Sorry for running into you and getting mad."
Marceline sat there in shock. Princess Bubblegum knew her band? Knew them well enough to be able to recognize her? The rocker grew increasingly nervous next to this girl.
"Ah, so you're a fan?" Marceline risked the joke, scratching at her neck. She felt a blush form in her cheeks as she heard Bubblegum let out a soft little chuckle. "So uh, are you alright? I think The Princess Bubblegum would be the last person I'd expect to be crying at Adventurefest." Marceline subconsciously pulled at the grass with her hands.
"Yeah well, there's a lot people don't know about me." Bubblegum whiped another tear away with her thumb. She was qiuet for a moment, there was a hesitation in her voice as she spoke. "My mom, she uh... we had a little disagreement about my next set."
"Disagreement?" Marceline questioned.
"She wants me to act all sad and junk about my breakup with Braco," she paused for a moment, "You know, Broc Li? Our whole relationship was just a big PR show, the guy is an absolute wad. Doesn't have an ounce of respect for anyone that isnt himself. A complete Narcissist. He's got the world fooled with his charm, but it's all a lie." Suddenly Bubblegum couldnt stop talking as all of her feelings poured out. It was as if this was the first time she was ever truly honest. Maybe it was, but Marceline didn't know that. "I'm happy it's over, quite relieved actually. I just can't find myself to be sad about it. Even if it's an act." Princess Bubblegum turned her head so she could face the woman next to her.
Marceline sat there staring, jaw in the dirt. She'd never admit it, but she did know all about PB and her dream boy of a boyfriend, Broc Li. And if anyone asked her, she knew it was a sham, even without the girl saying it for herself.
"Good riddance, I suppose. Never liked the guy, his music is garbage. Guess his music matches is shining personality." Marceline finally spoke, eliciting a wind of laughter from Ms. Pretty In Pink.
"You're funny, I like you Marceline." She continued to chuckle under her breath as she gently nugged Marceline with her shoulder. The taller woman opened her mouth to speak, but was interupted by her very loud phone ringing in her pocket.
"Shit, sorry. Its my guitar player, I gotta take this." Marceline pushed herself up off the ground before pressing the green phone on her screen. "Keila, what's up?"
"Dude, where the hell are you? They're sending us into make up early, they need you here right now."
"Fuck, okay, I'm on my way. Be there in five." Marceline hung up the phone, shoving it back into her pocket. She turned to face Bubblegum once more. "Gotta jet." She jammed her thumb into the direction of the stage. "Catch you at the after party tonight, Princess." Marceline shot her a confident smirk.
"That sounds lovely." Bubblegum pushed herself up onto her feet, using her hands to brush off her pink pleaded skirt. She reached her hand out as an offering to Marceline, who gladly took it. Wow was her hand soft. Before Marceline could pull away, her grip tightened. "Bonnibel. My actual name is Bonnibel." She smiled up at the much taller woman. "Thank you for cheering me up. I hope to see you later." Bonnibel winked before letting go of her hand and disappearing into the trailer behind her.
Marceline stood there in shock as she watched her new friend fade into the trailer. Did she...did she just wink at her?
