It was summer and the sun was shining high in the sky of the kingdom Sadala, gracefully illuminating everything it touched. It was the hottest time of the year and also the most magical. The legends of the kingdom said that during the summer, magical creatures of the forest, such as fairies, elves, and goblins, would come out of their burrows during the nights and, hidden, grace the crops and bless the animals, increasing and improving the production of the kingdom's resources, even though there were sometimes some losses and misfortunes, it was the blessings of the magical beings that brought balance to the world.
Believing in these legends, the inhabitants of the kingdom used to leave offerings such as food and drink in some parts of the kingdom, especially in the forest, so the magical creatures could feed themselves during the night, as a form of gratitude for their actions.
With the intention of preparing a delicious offering for the magical beings of the forest, a beautiful young girl came out of the town's warehouse, carrying a straw basket with the purchases she had just made. She was wearing a delicate lilac dress with an empire silhouette that accentuated her small, but curvy body. On her arms were silk gloves that covered her elbows. She had long black hair that was tied back in a loose bun, large dark eyes, a delicate smile, and pale skin.
As she made her way around the establishment she felt a firm, familiar hand grabs her by the waist while another appeared in front of her holding a rosebud. She was startled by the act but had no time to do anything when the hand on her waist pulled her close to the tall, sturdy body, encircling her petite body in a loving embrace.
"Goku!" she exclaimed excitedly and took the rose in his hands, an act she was used to, as he always gave her flowers when they saw each other. She turned to face him so that she could see his beautiful face and his bright smile.
The boy didn't hesitate to capture her lips in a soft, passionate kiss.
"Goku... we're in public!" she sounded alert, breaking away from the kiss, like a scolding, but not very concise as her expression softened in the next second.
"I know, I know!" he agreed but made no point of releasing himself from her embrace. "But, Chichi, I saw you walking by and... I missed you so much!"
The boy who smiled fondly at her had unruly black hair that pointed in many directions in defiance of gravity, he was tall and strong, fair-skinned, but a little tanned by the sun and was very handsome. His smile was charming and his gaze gentle. He was dressed simply and a little worn out from work with a dark blue linen shirt with long sleeves that showed off the muscles underneath, beige pantaloons, and black high boots on his feet.
He ran his fingers gently over her cheeks, which had taken on a lovely pink tint.
Goku knew people don't take kindly for a single lady to be kissing single men, but there was no one around, and Chichi would be lying if she said she didn't miss him too, and in fact, she hoped to meet him on her way to the town. Seizing the moment, Chichi looked around and noticed there was no one nearby, so she dropped the straw basket on the ground and braided her arms around his neck, sealing her lips with his once again.
As soon as their mouths parted, Goku smiled and looked directly at her large black pearls, and then stared at her pink lips that remained ajar, as an invitation for the act to continue. However, he knew he couldn't push his luck; if anyone saw them there, they could get into trouble. Chichi was the daughter of Duke Ox, a noble and respectable (and also robust) man of the kingdom, and owner of a huge herd of cattle that provided both milk and meat for many villagers, so she was a very well-known lady.
Goku felt lucky to be with her, to be honest, he didn't know how a girl as beautiful as Chichi could be interested in a humble plebeian like him, whose land he plowed didn't even belong to him or his family, but belonged to other lords for whom he worked.
The two met a couple of months ago when Goku went to bring the produce he had harvested from Mr. Roshi's farm to the Duke's estate, but who went to welcome him was his daughter, the beautiful but angry Lady Chichi. He immediately fell in love with her, not only for her beauty but also for her feisty way. He had gone there to fix the mess that Yajirobe, his co-worker, had made earlier and had brought the wrong vegetables there, so Chichi was angry because she had been waiting for the product all morning and needed it fresh to make the dishes she had thought of, but Goku found her irritation and quarrelsome manner extremely charming. He managed to appease the situation when he commented that he couldn't imagine that she, a Lady, daughter of Duke Ox, could cook, it was to be expected that they had numerous servants to do this so she wouldn't have to worry about such a thing, but she took it as a challenge, said that she liked to cook, and decided she would prove to him that she could cook as well as the royal chef herself.
That said, she made Goku wait until she finished some of the dishes and handed them to him to taste. He not only liked to stay around and get to know her, but he loved the food she had prepared – because he definitely liked all kinds of food – as he loved absolutely everything about her, her voice, her scent, her mannerisms... Chichi, on the other hand, fell in love with Goku's relaxed and cheerful manner, he was funny and had an air of innocence that was fascinating, besides being very handsome, of course, but the truth was that she managed to be so comfortable in his presence, in a way that she had never been in the presence of any other man.
And after that day, the two of them created an incredible connection. Goku started making all the deliveries to the Duke's estate and would eventually meet her in town when she went there to do some shopping, always bringing her a flower.
However, because of Chichi's social status and also because of her beauty, Goku knew it was only a matter of time before suitors would start showing up to court her. He knew that he needed to take action as soon as possible if he wanted to be with her forever, as his heart craved, so he murmured, with conviction: "I'm gonna talk to your father, Chichi!"
"W-what?" she asked surprised and unable to quite believe his words.
"I'm gonna talk to him, I'm going to ask for your hand!" his dark eyes reflected the honesty of his words, and her gaze brightened in response. "I'll talk to him tonight! And soon we will be married!" he assured.
Chichi smiled broadly. This was everything she wanted most and she had no doubt at all that Goku was the man of her life, but she didn't know to what extent he also felt the same way she did, however, with this revelation, she was now certain.
"Oh, Goku!" she hugged him tightly and emotionally, and he giggled. Then she sealed her lips with his again, now caring little if there was anyone around. They were about to be engaged, so it would be okay to be with him like this.
As soon as they were apart again, Goku picked up Chichi's basket from the ground, and together they walked side by side.
"What are you going to prepare this time?" he asked curiously.
"I'm going to make cream cookies," she answered proudly and soon saw his smile grow wide. "But they are offerings for the fairies and elves!"
"Awww!" Goku pouted. "But won't there be even a little one left for me?"
Chichi laughed softly and then answered: "Okay, I'll leave some for you!"
Goku cheered and continued his walk with Chichi who, like him, was oblivious to the fact that, at this moment, they were being watched by someone…
Summer is the most expected season of the year for the whole kingdom, it was always celebrated with a huge and beautiful festival – this one was to take place soon, in four nights' time.
The whole palace was in an uproar with preparations. The king, Beerus, an old, skinny man with a thin mustache and grumpy humor, spared no expense, let alone the efforts of his employees. For the most important festival of all, especially when it came to the banquet, abundance was a trademark of his parties and he was never willing to give this up.
While his employees were performing their assigned tasks, the monarch was quietly enjoying a bunch of grapes when his peace was interrupted by his counselor, who abruptly entered the royal hall.
"Your Majesty!" called a tall, slender man with lilac eyes and white hair with a long topknot. Beerus growled in response and rolled his eyes; he hated being interrupted, even if he was doing absolutely nothing. "Duke Ox is here and demands a word with your highness."
"What the hell, Whis..." grumbled the king as he massaged his temples. "What does he want?"
"Something to do with his daughter, Your Majesty. He needs your assistance, as commander of Sadala, to solve his problem. He came accompanied by her and two other men."
"Who?"
"Lord Vegeta and a plebeian, Son Goku."
The king pondered for a second wondering what this could mean, it seemed a rather unlikely group, he knew the Duke very well, and he knew he wouldn't be there unless it was something really important. Then he made a sign with his hands and said:
"Okay, send them in!"
Whis bowed and left the hall, while the king devoured the rest of the grapes in his hands. Then the counselor returned, accompanied by the Duke and his daughter, along with Goku and another man, who was shorter than Ox and the plebeian, the same height as Chichi. He had black messy hair that was sticking up, like the flame of a candle, black eyes, and a frown on his face, yet he was still very handsome and presentable, his clothes were elegant in shades of black and gray, with a tie, tight-fitting riding pants, and black high-top boots.
"Your Majesty, here is Duke Ox Mao and his daughter, Lady Chichi Mao. Lord Vegeta Sayan and also Goku Son." Whis announced them and each of them bowed respectfully to the king as soon as their respective names were pronounced.
The king stared at them imposingly from his seat from which he had not even risen, they all looked unpleasant, with no happy faces. Duke Ox then walked a step forward and began to speak:
"Your Majesty, thank you for receiving us." Ox thanked him and bowed briefly again before facing the king, his gaze was bleak, but his voice was thundering, certain of what he was saying. "It's with sadness that I come here today to present you with a complaint about my daughter. I fear for her fate, Your Majesty, because she's adamant in her ideas."
"What is your complaint, noble Duke?" questioned the king.
"You see, Your Majesty, Lord Vegeta is the man I have chosen for my daughter Chichi to marry. He is a man of a noble family, respectable and well-educated. He asked me for my hand in marriage, and to him I gave my blessing!" he then pointed at the plebeian and continued "But this other man, Goku, he approached my sweet, innocent girl and bewitched her, deceived her and stole her heart. Chichi doesn't want to marry the Lord, Your Majesty, but this plebeian who's only interested in our money and lands!
"Come on, that's a lie!" Goku shouted nervously, he wouldn't allow them to say such nonsense about him, but it was all in vain, the Duke had already found out about their relationship through Vegeta, who jealously, persuaded Ox against Goku. Chichi shook her head, denying his father's words. "I love Chichi and want to marry her, this has nothing to do with her title or her possessions."
"Well, I won't allow it!" Ox thundered, making the others tense up. "You're not a man worthy of my daughter!"
"Gentlemen, please calm down!" Whis asked cordially, trying to cool down the situation. Vegeta just crossed his arms and clucked his tongue in disgust.
The king then abruptly rose from his seat, causing the loud creaking of the armchair to silence everyone. Calmly, he walked a few steps toward Chichi and then asked:
"Lady Chichi, what do you have to say, about this? Why don't you accept the man chosen by your father? Lord Vegeta is a nobleman, a man of good character, and an excellent catch. I'm sure that many ladies of the kingdom would like to be betrothed by him."
"My heart belongs to Goku, Your Majesty." she replied firmly and with her chin up. "Goku's also a man of good character and I care little for titles. I'll give up my title and my heritage to marry him if I have to."
"Never!" Ox yelled. "I will not let my only daughter make a mistake like this. You will marry Vegeta, Chichi, that is my final word!"
"Accept it, Chichi, this is our destiny. Your father's in our favor!" Vegeta said and then looked Goku up and down, with contempt in his eyes. "And as for you, Kakarot, stop trying to pull a fast one and find someone on your level!"
"Well, Vegeta, if Duke Ox thinks so highly of you, why won't you marry him? He's a widower anyway!" Goku retorted and Whis had to hold back his laughter, but received a crossed look from his king and soon pulled himself together. "Let Chichi make her own choice!"
Vegeta narrowed his eyes at his rival, but had to hold back from punching him in front of the king. He was a nobleman, after all, and owed the king respect.
The lord was from a rich and traditional Sadala family, they grew many kinds of vegetables and grains. Goku even worked for a while on their land and there he earned the nickname Kakarot. This was when their rivalry began, long before they met Chichi. Vegeta went to where the farm workers were with the intention of supervising the men's work, but they were on their break and were having fun in an arm-wrestling competition. Goku was beating all the men, none of them could outmuscle him, but Vegeta made light of it and was then challenged by the others to prove that he could beat him, which did not happen. With his pride wounded by the humiliation of having lost to a lowly peasant, Vegeta fired him from the farm as a form of punishment, but hold a grudge against the man, which only worsened after he discovered that Chichi and Goku were dating. She, of all people, was the woman he fell in love with at first sight, but never wanted anything to do with him.
"Vegeta, why don't you marry Bulma?" Chichi suggested sweetly, trying to convince him to change his mind about marrying her. "You know she loves you and would love to be with you. You've already dated, you already have a history!"
"That vulgar woman doesn't interest me!" Vegeta replied and turned his face away. Bulma and he had had an affair in the past, he liked her, she was a very beautiful woman from a noble family, but his heart had been taken by the Duke's daughter the moment he met her and there was nothing he could do about it. "I will marry you, as guaranteed by your father."
Chichi closed her face in an angry frown, Bulma was her best friend and she didn't like him speaking of her like that.
"Then you'll die alone, because I won't marry you! I love Goku!" she stated in anger and tapped her foot on the ground, showing that her opinion wouldn't change. Vegeta growled, annoyed.
"Stubborn woman!"
"It looks like we are at an impasse..." the counselor commented amused by all the commotion, but really touched by the story of the two lovers whose union was being prevented by her father, he had always had a weakness for romance. The king said nothing, just watched everything seriously and bored, he wasn't interested in such banal matters. "Your Majesty'll need to intervene... It's a pity that these two can't be together, they really seem to truly love each other."
Beerus gave his advisor a corner glance, but even though he was king, there wasn't much he could do. The laws of Sadala were clear and he couldn't just change them overnight. So he huffed and said:
"Think carefully about your father's proposal, Lady Chichi. The Sadala laws give parents the right to dispose of their children, but you already know that, don't you?" she shook her head affirmatively.
"Just as you know that if you don't accept, your fate will be execution for disobedience." Whis added, it wasn't a question, but a statement, and Chichi nodded, confirming that she was also aware of this detail.
Ox had his heart in his hands, he believed that by going to the king and exposing the whole situation, Chichi would go back on her decision and marry Vegeta, after all, he didn't wish the death of his little girl.
"These are your options, milady." the counselor said. "Marry Lord Vegeta or die in a public square."
Notes:
"A Midsummer Night's Dream" is a play by William Shakespeare written in the mid-1590s. It's a very small play, the book is short, and it is in the public domain, meaning that no copyright is charged for the use of the work. You can easily find an online version to read. It's a very entertaining and light piece. If you have never read it, you may find similarities to the plots of other stories and adaptations that have been done in various movies and cartoons. If not, you'll be surprised, it's a very nice story.
For those who have read it, you may have already figured out who each of the characters is. Goku is in the role of Lysander, while Chichi is Hermia, Vegeta is Demetrius, and Bulma, will be Helena. Ox plays the role of Hermia's father, Duke Aegeus. We will see in the next chapters the appearance of other characters as well.
The dynamic of the couples follows exactly as in the original story. It is a GoChi and also a VegeBul (even though at this point in the story Vegeta is in love with Chichi).
In the work, it is not a festival, but a wedding. The wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons was to take place in four nights. I have chosen not to use the representation of these characters in the story and substitute the wedding for the festival. The role of Theseus, who is here left as the King of Sadala is taken by Beerus, while Hippolyta is left out, but I added Whis as the king's advisor, a character that does not exist in the book.
In fact, those who have read it know that the beginning of the story already starts directly with Theseus and Hippolyta receiving the Duke to solve the problem of their daughter who was in love with another man and not the fiancé he had chosen for her. I decided to add the introduction of Goku and Chichi to put a little more context for them. There are some other different details, those who have read it must have already noticed, but I will only mention those that are more important because there will still be some changes in the next chapters, I didn't want to do something exactly the same, only changing the names of the characters, but to give my version of the story with the characters from DB.
