One. One more day till my life changes for the rest of my life. The Choosing Ceremony. My twin brother and I are the next to leave our family after our two older brothers left a few years ago to Dauntless. My parents accept that, they know we're going to leave them at some point. Heck, nearly the whole faction know we're going to leave... Don't get me wrong, it's not as if I've hated growing up in Erudite it's just too calm. There's nothing to look forward to. I want to be free and run with the wolves that protect this city, to be wild and not get into trouble for it. One more day. And we'll spend it the only way we know how: wrecking the tranquillity of Erudite.
"Time check?" Issy peers at her brother, Alec, from over her shoulder who is bent over a tablet, tapping furiously.
"Six minutes." He shoved his fingers into his hair. "Six minutes and Cody has yet to connect the third cube to the circuit." He huffs. "Ah! There it is." He stops typing and shuts it down. "Time to go."
Quickly, they pack up. According to Alec they have four minutes before things go pop, preferably they'd like to get to the meeting point before then but they'll roll with it if they don't. Up ahead near the main doors of Erudite Cody is leaning against a white pillar looking around. He stands straighter when he spots us.
"What the hell took you so long to link it up?" Alec hisses when they're within arms length.
"Jeremy was hovering, okay? He wouldn't move."
"Where's Cara?" Issy asks, searching for her little sister, their forth mischief maker.
"Here!" A voice shouts from behind them. Cara runs from the elevator with her light blonde hair flowing behind her. "Sorry, I got lectured by Jeanine for running."
"Time?" Cody looks to Alec who glances at his watch.
"One minute max."
Cody lets out a breath, "I'm going to be really surprised if we get away with this. . ."
"What can they do?" Cara glances at us in turn. "You're all leaving tomorrow – Cody don't look at me like that, it's obvious. And I can play the innocent card by crying."
Cody's eyebrow furrow together. "Does that actually work?"
"It works if Jeanine is there, she gets uncomfortable if I cry and makes an excuse to leave." She shrugs her shoulders.
Somewhere in the hallways of Erudite four loud bangs can be heard, muffled by the walls and Issy grins. "Show time."
Pops and bangs come from four different directions. People's shouts and cries follow the noise and the four pranksters hope it works properly. From four corners of the entrance hall of Erudite something runs into the room. Cara gasps and hits Alec's side whispering 'we did it!'. Four huge outlines of different animals stand in the room. Technically, they not standing there at all, just floating. The sparks that make their bodies connect to together in a wireless circuit, the same circuit Alec was working on; 'Kinda like what I imagine a patronous to look like.' Issy thought to herself. A red wolf, a blue lion, a yellow horse and a green dragon stand there for a few seconds before bursting into action. Steadily, they rose into the air, speeding up until they collide in the centre of the room. Together they pop, making the colours mix and some sparks fly. Their outlines merge, creating the Erudite symbol before exploding into fireworks. Little children squeal in delight while their parents try to shush them.
"Well, at least someone enjoyed the show. . ." Cody drawled, making Cara laugh. He looks up and his eyes widen. "I think it's time to disappear." He nods his head to where Jeanine is whispering furiously to her second.
"Yeah, big day tomorrow." Alec laughs.
"See you tomorrow." Issy adds.
The next morning, Issy finds herself in front of a mirror. Her eyes scan her face, taking in her unnatural-natural hair and eyes that she shares with her brother.Dressed in blue trousers and a white shirt, she went downstairs to the kitchen where the rest of her family have gathered. She see Alec is dressed similarly to her. At the head of the table her dad notices her first and motions to the seat next to him on the other side of Alec. Her mum and Cara are sat opposite the twins. Her dad, Richard, folds his paper, looking at Alec, Issy and Cara in turn.
"Either of you wouldn't have anything to do with that lights display yesterday, would you?"
"Maybe-" Issy starts.
"Maybe not –" Alec adds.
"You never know really." Cara finishes.
Their mum, Ella, shakes her head and smiles. "My trouble makers. We can't say anything, we were just as bad."
He grins. "I never said we weren't but that was in Dauntless, not Erudite." His face turns serious. "Since you were both born we knew you weren't Erudite," Richard gazed at Issy and Alec then glanced at Cara. "Not any of you. Not even your hair or your eyes fits." He laughs, gesturing to the black to grey gradient Issy's and Alec's hair is and to the gold that bleeds into their blue eyes when they show a strong emotion, all thanks to a psychopathic uncle and his serums. "We just hope that you'll both be happy in what faction you choose and we'll love you either way."
Their mum's eyes shine with tears. "Although we both have a feeling that you'll complete the circle like your brothers have; Dauntless to Erudite, Erudite to Dauntless. If that's what you'll choose, please send our love to our boys." She glances to the clock. "Come on, time to go."
Issy sat in between Alec and Cara who where flanked by their mum and dad in the section allocated to the members of Erudite in the middle. The leader from Candor, Jack, gives the same speech the faction leaders do every years before calling the names out.
"Callum Abbott." An Abnegation boy steps up to the bowls that represent our factions. Grey stones for Abnegation. Soil for Amity. Water for Erudite. Broken glass for Candor. Burning Coals for Dauntless. Callum doesn't hesitate as he raises his hand above the grey stones as he lets his blood drip. Jack announces the result and Abnegation clap. Issy starts to zone out slightly, only paying attention to those who transfer into Dauntless. So far it's two boys: one from Amity and the other from Candor.
"Cody Cropper." Issy and Alec sit up alert as their best friend walks to the bowls. For what seems like hours they wait for the result. "Dauntless!" And the Dauntless cheer and clap.
As time goes on, more names are called and more people transfer to Dauntless. The list is currently standing at seven transfers and seven Dauntless-borns.
"Alec Vince." Jack calls out. Issy, Cara and their mum stand to let Alec out while their dad pats Alec on the shoulder. Alec shares a glance with Issy as he walks past, he squeezes Cara's hand and then his mum's and walks to the bowls. He barely looks to Jeanine who is sat on the first chair next to the steps. Alec accepts the knife from Jack and with confidence cuts his palm and holds it over the burning coals. His blood sizzles as it hits the coals and Jack calls out Dauntless. the faction cheers as Alec walks over to sit next to Cody who slaps him on the back. Alec looks back toward to Erudite where Issy and Cara shares a grin with him and their mum and dad smile with tears in their eyes.
"Issy Vince." Cara and her mum stand again to let her out as her dad brushes her hair back and winks at her, Cara sticks her tongue at her and her mum smiles. Like Alec, Issy barely glances at Jeanine but she manages to send her a smirk, they never got along anyway. Issy accepts the now clean knife and slices at her hand. With no hesitation she raises it over the bowl and let's her blood drip. "DAUNTLESS."
So that's the first Chapter of Golden Flames. Hoped you enjoyed it and tell me what you think? If there are any spelling/grammar mistakes then I apologise. As I said, any advice is greatly welcome. :)
