The sun shone down on a town called Dillydale as the citizens went about their business, working or spending time with their friends or just relaxing at home. It appeared like nothing out of the ordinary was happening. However, that didn't stop two Mr. Men wandering around in hopes of discovering something new and exciting so they wouldn't be bored all day.

For a bit, it looked like they wouldn't find anything to do, and they were almost ready to give up and go back to the observatory where they lived. But then, they came to the end of a street and stopped abruptly, widening their eyes at what they saw.

There, in the middle of an open field, stood a young-looking human girl. Her hair was a bright red color, and she wore a pair of black boots that went halfway up her legs, her jeans tucked into them. Her shirt was striped with long sleeves.

As they stared at her in astonishment, she bent down to pick up a pink flowery bag that was by her feet. She stretched the long strap over her head and placed it on her shoulder. The girl had an expression on her face that suggested she was shocked or confused.

The best friends exchanged looks.

"How odd," the small Mr. Man murmured as if he was talking to himself, but his friend nodded in agreement to what he said anyways.

"I wonder who she is," the light green one confessed.

"Why don't we go investigate?" Not waiting for a reply from the other Mr. Man, the smaller one walked over to the human. His best friend followed him, very keen to find out about this mysterious girl, who seemed to show up out of nowhere.

As they approached, she turned to them, fear suddenly flashing across her face, and she took a step away from them as they stopped in front of her. But she kept eyeing them like she wasn't sure what to make of them.

Up close, she appeared to be no older than ten, if that, and a crescent moon shaped necklace with a pendant hung from her neck. There was a picture on the pendant: A full moon outlined against a bright red light that seemed to shine deep within the necklace itself. The bigger Mr. Man tried to get a closer look but the girl snatched her necklace away, hiding it from him.

"Good tidings!" the small man greeted her, and he tipped his hat to her in a welcoming manner. "I'm Mr. Small. And this here is Mr. Nosy," he added as he gestured to the light green Mr. Man.

The girl said nothing, only continued to stare at them, still holding on tight to her necklace. Clearly, they were making her nervous which confused Mr. Nosy, since they haven't done anything to her. She's probably just scared because she doesn't know us, he told himself, hoping that would change over time if she decides to stay in Dillydale and then she'll realize that they are really friendly.

"Hey," he spoke up, smiling down at the girl. He knew he shouldn't press her for answers right away since she seemed so frightened, but he couldn't stop himself from asking," What's your name?"

Her eyes suddenly grew bigger, if that was even possible. Then she bowed her head and let go of her necklace. "My name…" Her voice was soft, and when she looked back up at them, her expression had turned from confused to sad. "I suppose I should have a name… But I don't remember it…" Her body started trembling, and she put her face in her hands as she sobbed.

The two friends shared a concerned look before turning back to the young girl. Mr. Nosy placed his hand on her shoulder in a consoling way while his little friend spoke gently to her. "It's alright. Don't worry. Everything's gonna be okay." Even though his words were meant to be comforting, Mr. Small's voice hinted that he might have his doubts about what he said.

Mr. Nosy pulled away from her, thinking how odd it was that she couldn't remember her own name.

Slowly the girl lifted her head and wiped her tear stained face with her shirt sleeve. Then she blinked at the Mr. Men in front of her.

"I'm sure you'll remember your name soon," Mr. Small told her gently. He paused before adding," But how about in the meantime, we call you Ruby on account of your bright red hair?"

For a long moment, she just stared at them until at last she nodded. "I like that name," she decided in a happier tone, and her eyes shone with delight after she wiped away the remaining tears.

The light green Mr. Man gazed down at her. "So, Ruby," he began carefully, not wanting to overwhelm the poor kid too much," where are you from?" He knew she wasn't from around here, since he's never seen her before.

Her expression darkened with confusion again, and she turned her head from side to side as if she thought she could find the answer hidden somewhere. "I… I don't know," she finally confessed, looking back at them. Then she frowned, the little happiness she had been feeling vanished as she murmured," I don't even know where I am…"

Instantly Mr. Nosy felt bad about upsetting her for a second time. I only wanted to know where she was from…

His best friend's voice interrupted his thoughts, and he glanced down at the small man. "You are in a lovely place called Dillydale," Mr. Small informed her as he gave her a big grin, his eyes sparkling, and Mr. Nosy wondered if he was thinking how wonderful this town could be.

His mind didn't stay long on his little buddy, though, as it went back to the young girl. He knew he shouldn't question her anymore, especially since all it seemed to do was make her sad. However his nosy nature got the best of him. "Where are you staying?" he asked.

She shifted her bag to a different position on her shoulder as if it was hurting her. "I don't know that either," she admitted, sighing heavily. "I can't seem to remember anything before meeting you two…"

The friends shared a worried look. "Not even how you got here?" Mr. Small pressed gently as he turned back to her.

Ruby stared at him, an uncertain expression on her face. "All I remember is just… being here…" She was silent for a moment and then added," I think I might have woken up here. Because I don't remember walking or riding in a car."

This is really weird, Mr. Nosy thought. As he was wondering why she couldn't remember anything, his gaze moved down to her necklace. He wasn't sure if his eyes were playing tricks on him, but he thought he saw the red light glow brighter behind the full moon, and suddenly he got a strong feeling that there was more to this necklace than just being an accessory.

"That's interesting," he commented as he reached out for it. But she pulled away, a startled look on her face, and she gripped her necklace tightly. Seeing her reaction, he regretted trying to grab it without asking for permission first. "Sorry," he muttered, taking a step back.

She relaxed a little but still held onto her necklace. "It's fine," she responded in a quiet voice. "I just… feel safe with it, that's all," she went on after a moment, speaking slowly like she didn't know how to explain her connection with the thing hanging around her neck.

"We understand." Mr. Small glanced at his friend, who nodded in agreement.

However, not even a second later, the light green Mr. Man's eyes wandered to her shoulder bag, and he felt the need to ask her about it, despite what just happened. "What's in there?"

The girl looked down at it. "Dunno," she answered. She finally let go of her necklace and reached over to open the bag. As she fished through it, she explained," I saw it here beside me and I guess it belongs to me." She pulled out a folder and looked through it. "Just a bunch of paper," she announced.

As she put the folder back into the bag and started pushing more stuff aside, a tap on his hip made Mr. Nosy look down at his little friend, who was gesturing behind them. "Follow me," he whispered with a glance at the girl, but she was too busy going through her bag to notice the two walking off.

They paused once they were out of earshot but still close enough to see the girl.

"What do you make of all this?" Mr. Small asked his best friend as soon as they were away from Ruby.

Mr. Nosy didn't reply right away; he looked up to see that the human girl had pulled out another folder and was flipping through the pages, pausing every now and again as if reading something. Then he turned back to Mr. Small. "It's weird," he finally said, knowing that was the only way he could describe this situation. "She's clearly scared and confused though," he added with a frown.

A thoughtful expression appeared on Mr. Small's face. "It's strange that a girl would just appear out of the blue with no memory, especially one of her age." He glanced at her. "I mean, where's her family? You don't think they would have abandoned her, do you?" When he suggested that, concern flashed in his tiny, black eyes.

"What kind of family would abandon a little girl?" Mr. Nosy questioned, but for once he didn't want to know the answer, and he was thankful when Mr. Small didn't give him one, only shrugged uneasily.

For a few moments, they were silent. Then Mr. Nosy blurted out," Should we invite her to stay with us?" He surprised himself with that question. The thought never even crossed his mind until he spoke it out loud, but he realized that it was the only thing they could do to help her, for now, until they got a better understanding of this situation. Looking down at his buddy, he was glad to see him nodding.

"Good idea, Nose," the small Mr. Man said approvingly. "We can't leave a little girl out on the streets all by herself."

And hopefully she'll remember who she is and where she comes from while she's staying with us, Mr. Nosy thought, excitement rising in him. He really wanted to know everything about this strange girl.

Somehow Mr. Small seemed able to read his friend's mind, picking up that he was curious to find out what he could about Ruby— including her real name— for he chuckled and told him," I'm sure she'll remember everything soon; perhaps some rest will jog her memory."

Mr. Nosy nodded before walking back to the human girl with his best friend right behind him. "We have great news," he declared when they stood in front of her once more.

She paused in her reading and lowered the paper she was holding. "What's that?" she asked, sounding confused.

"Until you remember where you're supposed to be, you are welcome to stay with us," the light green Mr. Man told her, smiling. "And we promise to do whatever we can to help you."

His friend, who was standing beside him, nodded in agreement.

Ruby was silent for a moment, eyeing the two. Finally, she put the paper back into the folder, which she then shoved into her bag before closing it and letting it fall back to her side. "Okay. Thank you," she said with a grin. "You two are very kind."

Mr. Nosy felt his cheeks burn as he blushed at her compliment.

"Right, well, follow us." Mr. Small turned his feet in the direction of their house. Mr. Nosy and Ruby hurried to catch up to him, walking side by side.
