Chapter 1
The Grey family was known for secrets. Carrick Elliot Grey Sr. started the biggest family one. He was a young immature kid that slept around as a teenager. When he was 16, he knocked up his girlfriend Mia. Both sets of parents went berserk and Carrick was forced to marry her.
Carrick's family came from money, lots of money. His father was a part owner for the Detroit football team, so Michigan was their home. They threatened to take his trust fund if he didn't do exactly what he was told.
There was a small ceremony joining Carrick and Mia and months later they had a baby boy which they named Carrick Elliot Grey Jr. who they nicknamed Cary. Carrick got his life together after that. He had a family to support.
Carrick did everything right and made plans to follow his father. He finished high school and planned to attend the University of Michigan. He wanted to study business, while Mia would take care of their son. He didn't want to marry her at first, but their love grew stronger each day. He had a huge secret though, another son.
When Mia turned up pregnant, so did Leila Hyde. He begged Leila not to tell on him or he would lose everything. He promised her if she could keep it a secret he would give her 1 million dollars from his trust, which was nothing to him. The trust was a huge amount. She only had to hold out until he was 18.
Carrick Sr. stood outside the run down apartment Leila and his son Jack lived in. He walked up the steps and knocked. Leila opened the door holding the now two year old. He had dark reddish hair and his eyes were light gray. He didn't have Cary's blonde hair and blue eyes, but he was his son. The paternity test proved it. He looked like his mother.
She flung him in his arms and it was then that he noticed the track marks. He held the check in his pocket and looked over his son. He was skinny and much smaller than his and Mia's son. "Are you feeding him?"
Leila rolled her eyes, "Of course I am. What kind of mother do you think I am?" He watched Leila walk around the bare apartment. He wondered where the things were that he did buy.
Carrick wanted to do the right thing, but it would destroy everything. He came up with a plan in his 18 year old mind that made sense, it actually never made sense. "I should have the money in two weeks. We can definitely get you and Jack out of this dump. Sorry it's all I could afford, my parents have had everything on lock down.
Leila rolled her eyes again because they were living in luxury. "I wouldn't call living in my childhood bedroom with someone I was forced to marry luxury. I would have rather married you and been with Jack." He lied to her face only to keep her calm. Leila was just a fuck from a party. He didn't even know her last name. Mia was his stable girlfriend. He did care about Jack though, he was his blood.
He spent some time with them and when he left he made an anonymous phone call to child protective services. "Yes ma'am you can help me. My neighbor in Broadwater Apartments has a two year son. He's alone a lot and crying. I think she's on drugs, heavy drugs. I've even seen needle marks. That poor boy is malnourished."
Carrick listened. His plan was to have Jack taken away and put the money in a trust for him as an anonymous donor. He loved his son, but he couldn't ruin his life for him. He thought he would be adopted to a good home. His plan worked as far as he knew. Jack was removed and he delivered that trust drawn up by a lawyer. Jack was adopted by a family. He kept up with him from a distance and deposited more money every year on his birthday.
Carrick Sr. and Mia didn't have any more children. They raised Cary to be a man and take care of his responsibilities. Life kinda cursed him though, when he got his girlfriend, Grace pregnant as a teenager. Cary Grey and Grace Trevelyan dated all through high school. They both came from money and instead of being upset and forcing marriage, both sides were supportive.
When they brought their daughter Ella into the world, both grandparents stepped in so they would have a future they wanted. The grandparents switched off and cared for her for the most part, but they were loving parents, just a little too young.
Carrick Sr. never told anyone about Jack. He watched from afar and made sure he got the money. Sadly, Leila overdosed due to her habit. Jack went to college in New York and he lost track of him after that.
Cary and Grace stayed close to home attending the University of Michigan. Cary majored in Pre Law, while Grace went into the medical field. They got married after the first 4 years of college. It took another 4 years for both of them to finish, but they did it. When they graduated they decided it was time to move.
Their best friends Eric and Elena Lincoln begged them to join them in Bellevue Washington, a nice suburb outside of Seattle. Carrick Sr. and Mia stood with Grace's parents Theodore and Eleanor. Ella waved at her grandparents. Her parents took part of her name to name her. For 8 years the four older adults took care of everything. She was really going to miss them, but she smiled and waved. She knew her parents loved her too.
Ella looked out of the window. Cary looked in the mirror. "Guess who your new neighbors will be?" They kept the trip a secret. All Ella knew is they were moving and starting fresh. She shrugged. "Aunt Elena and Uncle Eric!" Ella's face lit up, she loved them so much. She also knew them very well. They had become her godparents.
They made stops along the way of their long family road trip. They went to zoos, theme parks, and some fancy hotels with pools while traveling through the different states. Ella wanted pictures every time they stopped.
Cary and Grace pulled up to their new home, and saw their friends waiting. The one thing they did have was their families support and money. It sure helped make their lives smoother. Cary opened up his own law firm in Seattle and Grace took a job at a medical practice. The house was amazing. "Welcome to Washington!" Grace put her finger over her lip. Elena peeked in the backseat. "She didn't make it huh? Can I wake her up?" Grace stepped to the side and gave Eric a hug.
Elena kissed Ella's cheek, "Wake up, sleepyhead." Ella didn't move. "Fine, have it your way. Tickle! Tickle! Tickle!" Elena tickled her belly as the rest just watched. Ella let out a loud but playful squeal. She hugged Elena tight and then hopped out to hug her Uncle Eric.
They all went to check out the house. They watched Ella run from room to room. "Mommy! Daddy! Can I go swimming in the pool?" They told her not yet because they needed to have it cleaned, but while they stayed with her godparents, she could swim at their house.
Things settled down and by the next year their family grew, adding Elliot. Ella was Grace's twin with brown hair and brown eyes, but Elliot was all Cary with blonde hair and blue eyes. Ella loved her brother and adored being a big sister.
Life settled down for them all. Elena and Eric had their struggles when she had a difficult time getting pregnant. When she finally did get pregnant she ended up having a miscarriage. It broke Grace's heart to see them having trouble, when they were so blessed with children. They were heading into their mid thirties and it wasn't getting any easier. Grace and Elena watched the kids play in the pool as it neared the end of summer. "Elena, have you two thought about adoption?"
Elena smiled and explained the long process. She changed the subject, "Grace forget about me, our baby girl is going to high school this year."
Grace looked at Ella. It had been one tough summer. She loved sports and was their little tomboy. "Yeah, she's different, it's like 14 changed my baby." At the beginning of the summer Ella went to Michigan and visited both grandparents. She came back in a crappy mood, but they thought she missed her grandparents.
She continued with summer sports and travel basketball. She fell in love with basketball, so it shocked everyone when she quit her travel team a week ago. Elena looked at her sitting on the edge of the pool splashing Elliot. She grabbed Grace's hand and promised to talk to her.
Elena did talk to her and she saw what Grace meant. She was standoffish and not the same Ella. Cary and Grace put their foot down and made her rejoin her sport. They thought she needed something to fill her time. Elena saw how upset she had been and even bought her a new basketball hoop and expensive ball return. They all stood by the hoop as Elena threw the ball to Ella, "Sweetheart, are you going to try out for the high school basketball team? I think you can make varsity." It was fall and tryouts were soon.
Ella rolled her eyes and threw the ball in the other direction. They watched her cry and run into the house. Ella's behavior put a strain on Cary and Grace. Their best friends stood there in the driveway watching them argue about discipline. Elliot stood there with his finger in his mouth looking sad. Grace smiled at Elena as she went into the house to check on Ella.
Cary sighed, "I'm sorry. We don't know what's wrong with her." Eric blew it off thinking hormones and teenagers were natural, even though they all knew this wasn't Ella.
