Hey everyone! The idea for this story came to me when I was watching The Clone Wars tv series. For those who haven't seen the show, there are a few episodes where Anakin, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka get pulled into this realm called Mortis. There is no need to have seen the show to read this story but, if you have seen the show, you might have an idea where this story is going.
This story is set after TLJ but before the events of ROS. This means Crait has happened and Rey has been training with Leia for some time now. There is no Palpatine in this story, meaning Rey is not his granddaughter. Other than that, this story picks off where TLJ left off and will definitely have a happier ending than ROS!
Rey cursed under her breath as she narrowly dodged another asteroid. She glanced behind herself quickly, her heart skipping a beat as she saw that Kylo Ren's ship was even closer than before.
He was gaining on her. Not because the Falcon was slower than his ship, the Whisper, but because the Whisper was smaller. It could navigate the asteroid field better than the Falcon could and it was costing her the lead she'd had in the chase.
She never should have gone on that supply run. Finn had been right. He'd told her it was too close to the imperial base but she hadn't listened. She'd been so tired and frustrated with her Jedi training she'd jumped at the chance to get out of the Resistance base. She should have known Kylo Ren would have sensed her presence. Their connection hadn't disappeared with Snoke's death. She should have known better.
But Rey had never been one to listen to reason. She jumped into action first, without letting the possible consequences of her actions deter her. And now she was paying the price of her recklessness. Again.
Rey dodged another large asteroid and checked her scanners. She was almost out of the asteroid field. If she could just hang on for a few more minutes she'd be able to go to warp and escape. Rey grit her teeth, focusing all her attention on the task at hand. One asteroid, two, three...
She was almost there, just a few more asteroids to dodge and then...
Rey felt triumph course through her veins as the wide open blackness of space came into view. She was clear of the asteroid field. She sped up as much as she could as she readied herself for warp. She was about to push the button when she looked up, her eyes widening as what looked, at first, like another asteroid came into view. Only it wasn't an asteroid. It was the size of a small moon...but shaped like a prism. Rey could have sworn it had not been there before. She would have seen something so large.
The prism opened, like a giant misshapen ship opening the door to its hangar bay, and Rey snapped out of her shock in time to realize she was headed straight for it. It hadn't been that close before? Had it?
Rey tried to slow down the ship in time to maneuver around it but it was as if the ship was no longer responding to her. It kept hurtling towards the prism's opening, refusing to slow down. Rey glanced behind her, seeing Kylo Ren's ship was still on her tail. Was he doing something to her ship? Was this prism some kind of magnet?
Beginning to panic, Rey tried to stop the ship, her hands starting to shake when even this seemed to have no effect on the ship's momentum. It continued to hurtle towards the prism, as if drawn into the opening by some invisible force. Before she had time to do anything else, the ship crossed the threshold and entered the prism. Rey blinked in confusion as a barren mountainous landscape came into view beneath her. The Falcon continued to hurtle towards the mountains despite Rey's attempts to slow down the ship and Rey realized with a sinking feeling she was going to crash. She took a seat and quickly buckled herself up just in time for the ship to make impact with the rocky mountains below.
The impact sent shock waves through the ship and Rey felt her head collide with the seat behind her. She felt a searing pain in the back of her head and saw stars dance in front of her eyes. As the ship slowly came to a halt on the ground, Rey opened her eyes.
The front viewport was smashed in one part, a few rocks having found their way into the cockpit. A heavy cloud of dust filled the air outside the ship, filtering into the cockpit through the hole in the viewport. Rey coughed, her hands shakily reaching for her buckle.
She extricated herself from her seat, stumbling as she tried to stand up. Her head protested and Rey put her hands on the dashboard to steady herself for a moment. She reached up to touch the back of her head, her fingers coming away red. Rey sighed; this was no time to be injured.
Steeling herself, Rey left the Falcon, coughing as the dust outside filled her lungs. She squinted through the dusty air, seeing nothing but barren rock in front of her. Climbing down from the ship, she looked back the way she had come just in time to see Ren's ship crash some distance away from her. She lifted up an arm to cover her eyes as dust and debris from the crash came flying her way.
When the ship came to a halt, Rey looked up, squinting through the dust. She stared at the outline of the First Order ship, her heart beat quickening. Now, how was she supposed to escape him?
Rey climbed back into the Falcon, desperately trying to turn it on with no success. The controls didn't work, the viewport was smashed, and the engine seemed to be fried. There was no way it would be flying anytime too soon. Rey ran her hands over her face, her mind running through her limited options.
She'd just have to take Ren's ship then.
Rey pulled her lightsaber off her belt and lit it, the blue light illuminating her way as she strode through the dust towards the TIE fighter. She sped up when she saw the door to the Whisper open until she was practically running. Ren emerged from the wreckage wearing his cracked helmet and looked at her. Rey did not slow down as she approached him, lifting her lightsaber to attack him. Ren ducked to avoid her blow before stumbling backwards and putting up a hand.
"Rey, wait!" He cried but Rey took another swing at him regardless. Did he really expect she wouldn't try to defend herself? He had just chased her halfway across the galaxy and gotten her trapped on an unknown planet...if it was even a planet...
Rey heard Ren hiss in pain underneath his helmet as her lightsaber brushed up against his arm, burning him. Why wasn't he fighting back? Where was his lightsaber?
This question was answered a moment later as Ren reached out his injured arm and his lightsaber flew into his outstretched grasp. He lit it just in time to block Rey's third strike, his red blade clashing with her blue.
"Can you just-" Ren ground out in between swings, "Calm down-"
"Oh now you want to talk?" Rey snarled. "After you chased me half-way across the galaxy!?"
"Do you even know where we are?" Ren cried, his fear coming through despite the synthesized voice of his helmet.
"How would I know!?" Rey shot back. "I was too busy trying to get away from you to avoid entering this...place."
Ren swung his lightsaber at her and Rey failed to block it, the red blade coming dangerously close to her throat. The lightsaber stopped inches from her skin and Rey stared at it, her heart pounding in her chest.
Seconds later, Ren turned off his lightsaber and stepped away from her, raising his hands, as if in surrender. "Can we call a truce until we figure out where we are and how to get out of this place?"
Rey stared at him in suspicion, certain this was just a ploy to get her to let her guard down so he could kidnap her again. "No." She snapped.
Ren sighed, the sound coming out distorted through his mask. As if realizing this, Ren reached up to take off his mask, his black hair falling back down messily around his face. Rey examined his face, noticing that the dark circles under his eyes were more pronounced than she had ever seen them. His skin was pale and he looked exhausted. The thin scar she had given him had faded in the year since she'd cut his face but it was still very visible.
"I'm assuming the Falcon can't fly or you wouldn't still be here right now." Ren said and Rey tightened her grip on her lightsaber. He wasn't supposed to know that.
"And before you try to steal it, you should know the Whisper isn't in any better shape." Ren added, glancing over at the TIE fighter.
Rey chanced a look over at it, unable to deny he was probably right. The right wing had clearly been severely damaged on the way in and, without it working properly, the ship would be impossible to steer, let alone get off the ground.
"I don't know about you, but I don't sense any other life on this planet." Ren continued, "So unless there are some hidden ships somewhere in these mountain ranges, we're not going anywhere until we fix the ones we have."
Rey looked out across the barren mountains, realizing he was right about the absence of life. She probed the Force and felt nothing except their own Force signatures. She could feel no plant life, no animals, and no higher intelligence. It was as if the Force was...empty.
"I don't feel...anything." Rey said, her eyebrows knitting together in confusion.
Ren looked at her, "All I feel is you."
Rey looked away quickly, her eyes roving over the landscape. Now that the dust had settled, it was possible to see long distances. All that was visible was rocky mountains for miles and miles.
"Rey, your head..." Ren said, taking a step towards her. Rey immediately took a step back, remembering her injury. She reached up a hand to touch her head and once again came away with bloody fingers.
"I'm fine." She snapped.
"No, you're not." Ren said. "You need bacta now. You can't leave that untreated."
"You carry around bacta with you in your TIE fighter?" Rey asked, sardonically.
"Yes, actually." Ren said. "Can I go get it without you stabbing me in the back?"
Rey shut off her lightsaber and pocketed it, crossing her arms instead. "Go ahead." She said curtly, jerking her chin towards the ship.
Ren looked at her, the slightest hint of amusement in his expression. Rey bristled in annoyance at this. Nothing about any of this was even remotely funny.
Ren re-emerged from the ship a few moments later, bacta patches in hand, and walked over to her. Rey snatched the bandages out of his hand, opening them herself. She reached up to touch her head, realizing whatever bandage she put on was going to get caught in her hair.
"Let me do it." Ren said, attempting to take the bandages out of her hands.
Rey pulled them away from his grasp. "I can do it myself."
"Do you have eyes in the back of your head that I don't know of?" Ren asked and Rey shot him a withering look. She touched the area once more, covering what she thought was the injury with the bacta patch.
"You didn't cover all of it." Ren said, reaching to take the bandages from her again. Rey slapped his hand away but he managed to get ahold of a bandage anyway.
"Give that back." Rey demanded, holding out her hand for it.
Ren ignored her, trying to put it on her head.
"Stop it!" Rey snapped, ducking away from him.
"Why are you so stubborn?" Ren complained. "You can't see where to put the bandage. Why don't you just let me help you?"
"Because this is all your fault!" Rey cried, realizing too late that her hands were shaking. She looked away from him quickly and put another bandage on her head.
They had barely spoken to each other since he had refused to leave the First Order after Snoke's death. Even though they had been connected to each other through the Force more than a few times, they had done nothing but throw insults at each other. They had never directly addressed what had happened. They had just carried on with the knowledge that now they truly were enemies, not friends.
"I wouldn't have had to chase you if you'd just joined me when I asked you to." Ren said and Rey snapped her head up to stare at him in incredulous anger. His dark eyes were resentful, as if he were hurt by her rejection...as if somehow she was in the wrong for not turning against everything and everyone she cared about to join him.
"You could have come with me." Rey countered, furiously. "I offered you a way out. I was trying to help you."
"I offered you the galaxy and still it wasn't enough to get you to stay." Ren said, his hands clenching at his sides. "Instead, you preferred to go back to the murderers, traitors and thieves you call friends. You chose to wallow in filth when you could have been queen."
"Yes, because you're so happy ruling the galaxy." Rey said sarcastically. "That's why you can't sleep and you snap at anyone who dares to breathe too loudly or look at you funny."
"I am more powerful than even Darth Vader himself!" Ren cried. "I offered you that kind of power!"
"I never wanted it!" Rey screamed.
An earsplitting crack resounded, causing both of them to jump. Rey spun around to look towards the source of the noise, her eyes widening as she took in the giant crack that had just appeared in the face of the mountain behind her. She looked up at the crack, her eyes tracing it as it wound its way up to the top of the cliff behind her.
She looked back at Ren in bewilderment, forgetting for a moment she was furious with him. He looked equally as shocked, his eyes trained on the cliff.
"There is something...wrong...with this place." Rey said, a shiver running down her arms.
