Spectra Vondergeist had finished following the latest gossip she could dig up. This summer had been a gold mine of treads and rumors. Each of them juicier than the last with fang dripping facts. Her blog would explode from all the rumors. And that didn't include what she'd publish on the school newspaper, the Gory Gazette.
But despite her enthusiasm, the ghost girl wanted one piece of information more than anything. She haunted the mainframe day and night.
Still waiting for a certain response from a certain someone.
"I do hope he picks me..."She thought.
One morning, she checked and saw an email. She clicked it and gasped after reading its contents.
"Oh, my ghoul! Yes! Yes!"
To her utter joy, Spectra Vondergeist had received an email from You+Me=Love! saying that D-Fenton had chosen her. Her, out of thirty dates, he had all summer, and she was the one.
Her ectoplasm danced as she silently squealed. Though she wanted to post this online, that would have to wait.
The ghost girl almost leaped out of her ectoplasmic body as she recalled the day she signed up.
It was a little after Summer started, and they were on vacation.
The ghouls were all at the mall, enjoying another shopping was another day as summer sales were on. The girls were all enjoying some swamp fudge smoothies when Spectra ran into them.
"So, how have things been?" Spectra asked
Though school was only out for almost a week, the ghouls had been up to nothing out of their routine. In fact, they had just been on dates with their boyfriends, making Spectra let out a sigh.
Cleo has Deuce, Lagoona has Gill, Draculaura has Clawd, and even Ghoulia was with Slomo. Not to mention Frankie seemed close to Jackson now. Spectra was alone, giving her a feeling of mild jealousy.
She hasn't dated since she broke up with Porter, preferring to focus all her energy on her investigating for the school paper.
But the pangs of loneliness rang at the doorbell of her heart. They made sure their presence was known.
Just then, a gust of wind came and went through Spectra. The wind gave no sensation, but the paper that flew with it did.
"Huh?" Spectra said as she picked up the paper.
It was a flyer for a new dating service, You+Me=Love!.
"A dating service?" The ghoul asked with interest. "This could be just what I need."
Spectra was excited as she began filling out her own profile on the back of the sheet.
"Whatcha got there, Spectra?"Frankie asked.
But the ghost girl did not answer as she filled out her sheet, adding everything from username to description. She couldn't wait to sign up. A summer of love with all kinds of monsters. How many ghouls could resist?
"I hope I can meet the manster of my screams," Spectra sighed softly as she finished.
"Uhhh..." Ghoulia rasped as she pointed to the sight.
Everyone gathered around as they took note of a rather important, overlooked detail. Double-checking the flyer, it showed to be in the human world. Spectra read over the flyer a few times, her face crimson with embarrassment and shame.
"Oh my Ra, is this a normy service?" Cleo asked, worried.
"I thought this was a monster only site," Spectra said.
"But then how did this get here?" Frankie asked the question of the day.
The ghouls looked around and saw nobody that stood out. Well, more than usual. Being in a monster world meant everyone was different on a level, ranging from personality to appearance. So that task was impossible. But there were flyers everywhere. Monsters of all ages, mainly teens, saw the pieces of paper but ignored them in favor of their own business.
"Well...it doesn't matter," Frankie said, walking to the front. Her ghoulfriend stared at her in wonder and some disbelief as to where she would go with her statement. "This is a chance for monsters and normies to interact and show we're not so different. Who's with me?"
All the ghoul got was silence as her friends said nothing. Mall goers walked by, wondering what she was talking about.
"Uh...Frankie? You do realize Normies don't like monsters that much, right?" Clawdeen asked.
"Nor do we want much with them," Cleo added.
"Plus, this seems to be only for normies," Draculaura added.
"But if that was true, they wouldn't be passing them out," Lagoona said, but they only saw the flyers in the wind. Not a sinle monster was handing out flyers.
That left Frankie staring at her zombie friend, Ghoulia.
"Ghoulia, do you think you can help us out?" Frankie asked with pleading eyes. She wanted this to work for her friend.
Their zombie gal gave a thumbs up with a wide smile as she brought out her laptop. Between Ghoulia and Spectras, no system could keep them out. The two got to work quickly and had the ghost girl signed up and ready for her full month of dates.
"This is gonna be the ghoulest," Spectra said, hugging the nearby zombie girl.
In the girl's vigor, nobody noticed someone watching from afar with a happy face before disappearing. Though such sights were normal in the monster world, making it nothing suspicious.
Save for some comments on the staff's dating service would get about monsters in the service—much to their confusion.
The Fang Cafe was as festive as ever. Spectra waited for Danny to show up. She was a bundle of excitement, unable to float still.
Danny called her and said to meet here, where their first meeting was. Technically it was above ground, but the ghost boy did not want the ghost girl to wait outside. Things were starting to heat up again, and Valerie, another ghost hunter, could be seen roaming the town on her jet board.
Monsters, ghosts, witches, and other creatures of the night danced the night away as they howled and screamed. Playing on speakers was the hottest band in mosterdom, right now, The Bowling Tombstones. The ghost girl listened to the music to kill time as she stared at the doorway.
"May I take your order?" said a waitress, a werewolf girl.
"Uh, not yet, I am waiting for someone," Spectra said.
"Hot date?"
"How did you know?"
"I've seen it all. Anyway, I'll come back later,"
The waitress left for another table.
Time passed for a few minutes. Soon cheers were heard as someone entered the cafe. But not just anyone, Danny Phantom. Evident from his name being called by a nearby monster who recognized him.
"Phantom!"
"Hey, Phantom!"
"Way to scare up the night, Dan-nae!"
"Phatom in Howooose!" a were wolf holwed.
"Dude, Phantom, come hang!"
Danny declined that last one politely as he had business. Wanting to keep said reason to be more personal, the ghost boy went invisible as the teen went back to their business. They could understand the need for privacy. They were monsters as well.
The ghost girl surveyed the area as she tried to find any sign of Danny.
"Sorry, I'm late," came a voice from behind, making her jump. "Technus wanted to make a scream at the summer sale event at Stereo Shack."
Spectra floated up faster than anything as she watched the ghost boy land near her table. The girl was more alive than anyone else right now, with a heart beating faster than the music—a rarity for ghosts.
It didn't matter, as she was focused on a certain cute spook, who finally arrived.
"Danny," Spectra said, hugging the ghost boy.
Returning the gesture, the ghost boy embraced the ghost girl. They remained as such for a few seconds longer.
"Hey, Spectra," Danny said with a blush.
The two sat down as they talked and perused their menus.
Unbeknownst to the ghost girl, she wasn't the only one from Monster High in the restaurant. Across from the table, Frankie, Draculaura, Celo, Lagoona, Clawdeen, and Ghoulia seated themselves with menus up. They had read Spectra's blog and saw the notification of big news coming. They figured it could only be one of two things: the biggest gossip of the year or Danny choose her.
Sure enough, they knew their ghostly friend to go to the Fang' Cafe. Mainly because Draculaura stated it to be the most obvious because they had their first date.
"There he is," Draculaura said excitedly.
"I knew he'd choose her," Frankie said, feeling happy for Spectra.
"Moum..." Ghoulia said.
"It was obvious from the start," Clawdeen commented.
"Everyone shush," Cleo said, trying to eavesdrop.
At the Table, Danny stopped for a moment and stared at the ghost girl. His gaze blushened the ghoul under his warm eyes, though they glowed fiercely.
"Spectra," Danny started; the girl gasped for a moment. "I think you're amazing…you're so strong, so smart, and so beautiful…I think we truly have something between us…something special…so…what…what I am trying to say is….Spectra Vondergiest, will you please go out with me?"
Spectra took a moment to process everything as the boy confessed his feelings. His words echoed over and over again on loop as a wide smile formed. Her blush grew brighter with a shade of ectoplasmic purple. She was thrilled right now.
"Oh Danny, I thought you'd never ask," Spectra said as she pulled him into a hug, the ghoul was positively beaming. A rare occurrence with her.
Danny blinked before she smiled widely and hugged her back. Once she pulled her away, she kissed him on the cheek, which now burned from her touch.
"You…You mean it…" Danny said in disbelief while Spectra kissed his other cheek.
"Does that answer your question?" the ghost girl said coyly, blushing after the action. Normally she would smile, but the romance in the air gave her a surge of energy. She was too happy to care about anything, even her work.
Danny thought in excitement as he still couldn't believe it. Spectra said, yes. While there was barely any doubt in his mind, he thought for sure his ghost-hunting parents might act as some deterrent.
But now, he is dating who is, without a doubt, the most unique ghoul he has ever met. Sure his parents would flip once they found out, but he'll walk that bridge when he gets there.
And that was the only real obstacle.
Spectra's friends saw the entire thing, and they were gushing as stealthy as possible. Not a small task, given they are hormonal teenage monsters who are extremely happy for their friend.
"Awwwww," the ghoulfriends across the table cooed together. They went to their menus to actually order something. If they bumped into the couple, they would lie. Draculaura was finding the right hashtags for Critter till Ghoulia moaned for her to respect their privacy. Tonight was not for gossip but to celebrate their ghost friend's victory in romance.
"How romantic," Frankie gushed, wiping away some sparks.
"We are so throwing her a party," Clawdeen said, and Lagoona nodded.
Even Cleo found the scene to be heartwarming.
"She deserves the guy," She said as Ghoulia smiled.
Danny and Spectra had gone back to their meal, consisting of creeperoni screechza and spinach boofflé.
"So, what made you choose me?" Spectra asked, the smile never fell from her face.
"I won't lie, I've been with a bunch of girls.
"Thirty dates in one month."
"Exactly, but when it came to choosing, my dad actually gave me some great advice. Think about which girl's girl smiling face came to mind."
Spectra leaned in closer with each word uttered by the boy.
"And the first smile that came to mind was a quiet, phantastic ghoul with a purple aura."
Spectra's smile widens upon hearing this, and her blush deepened.
Oh, Danny... She thought with a sigh.
Sure, he is younger than her, but she did not care. The boy was already mature for his age, and how many mansters would race to save the girl and her ghoul friends from certain danger.
"So, are you gonna add this to your blog. As I said last time, I am okay as long as my secret remains a secret," Danny said.
The ghost girl giggled.
"The blog can wait," Spectra said softly. "Right now, it's just you and me."
Danny smiled as he grabbed her hand. The night was young, and the boy got permission to stay up later than usual for the occasion. So they would hit the darker side of Amity tonight. Where Ghosts and monsters haunt without harm.
Spectra took him to places like the planetscarium, local plays at a vampitheater, and even show him the theater. The ghost girl's favorite film Scarry Rotter was out, but the duo did not have time. Maybe for another date, it would be.
Danny was both surprised but also amazed to find himself having fun too.
They made a stop for ice scream, which actually tasted pretty good to Danny, and also took a flight together over a nearby park.
Danny felt happy. The ghost boy glanced at her and felt his heart race as he admired her dark and beautiful appearance. It was gothic yet had a charm he found irresistible. It was one of the reasons her smile, along with the rest of her, was the first thing he thought of. Who would have thought the boy would have pursued a relationship with an actual ghost?
And the best part was him liking every minute of it. As was Spectra.
While still a bit shy, the ghost girl glanced back at the ghostly hero, sometimes locking eyes. Instantaneously the two would blush, or so Spectra thought as she turned away too fast to tell.
Such was young love.
After the flight, it was getting late, almost eleven o'clock. Danny's curfew would arrive soon, and although his parents were understanding, curfew was still a curfew.
"Listen, Spectra, this has been really fun, but—"
"Time for you to go?" the ghost girl finished with a slightly sad tone. Ghosts and ghouls loved the night, even the most introverted ones. "I understand. At least, let me fly you to your home."
With a smile, the two soared into the air, hand in hand. Tomorrow was another day, and Spectra would wait forever.
After all, after many dates, it was Danny and Spectra.
