Chapter 1
Greg was a nice friend. He always has been. Since Grissom showed up in Vegas, Greg kept his guard by texting her and, now, by taking her to breakfast. It was crystal clear that he was worried. After all, he knew how much Sara used to love Grissom and how in bad shape she was after the divorce fiasco.
"So… uh… How are you doing?", he asked as casually as if nothing big was happening at all back at the lab. It made her truly smile.
"You know, you can ask me straight through", she replied while taking a sip of coffee, "just don't expect a straight answer. Or an answer whatsoever".
That was all the encouragement he needed.
"Do you hate him? I always wanted to know, you know, after you guys…"
Hate Grissom? Really?!
"I could never ever hate Grissom, Greg"
Greggo's face was bright red all of sudden, which, again, made Sara smile. Just a little bit. But, yeah, it was a dumb question, so deal with it, Greg. How could she, really?!/
"I just thought… you know… uh… couples after divorce, I don't know…. Forget that I said it"
She knows what he meant, of course. It wasn't that hard to find couples that couldn't stand each other during marriage, let alone after a divorce.
But no. As much as she was sad and frustrated, even depressed, about the turn of events that their marriage got into, she'd always loved Grissom.
It was their first weeks together and, despite all weirdness from that beginning, it was a rare occurrence to be apart when off clock. They got physical, a lot, to the point that, sometimes, she'd ask herself if she was getting addicted.
Yes, probably. But it's all good.
He seemed happy with that and, God, she never knew what happiness truly was til that point. Of course, she had moments of happiness before, but nothing compared to that.
She was over the moon when prized with golden stars at school. She couldn't hide her smile when her father gave her a compliment. She was thrilled when got accepted to Harvard.
But all those things, you know, vanished as soon as they happened. Day after day consisted of fake joys, a lot of alcohol and empty relationships. Just another day…
With Grissom was a totally different story.
She was convinced that at any moment he would go away, apologize, wish her well, and get that over with. Even though he didn't ever show any sign of it, it was too good to be true.
Well, the fact was that she had a girl's problem down there and the doctor said it was better to take a little break from her… activities in bed. When she told Grissom she couldn't… perform for some days, his face was unreadable. Was it a disappointment? Discomfort?
She knew Grissom was a mature and even a sensitive guy, not in the common sense of the word, sure, but he wouldn't treat the subject like most she was convinced that he wouldn't show up after work that day. For what, right?
Her soul almost left her body when, wearing her PJs and reading a book quietly at her couch, she heard a knock on her door. She would recognize that knock anywhere.
Later that day, when his face was buried in her neck while he slept soundly, she almost cried. It was hard to accept, after everything she got through, that someone really cared about her.
But she would give it a try.
It wasn't only about sex or pleasure, or some void he had to fill. It was a little bit weird and she couldn't quite name it - and she wasn't at all interested to - but, laying there, feeling his pajama fabric against her own, and his fingers intertwined with hers, she knew what happiness (finally) felt like.
"I could never hate Grissom", she said looking out of the window.
