Finding yourself in a world full of lies is hard but the small bittersweet moments make up all of the bad moments.
notes! It can be canon or not up to you, if you wanted to have a certain timeline then somewhere between season 7 of tvd but nothing chaotic is happening.
Alaric is not part of the girls lives (I'm sorry if you like him but I don't, hopefully you all can respect that)
Song mention is from hunger games!
Slight bashing on some characters.
Trigger warning as a mention of what Damon did to Caroline in season1.
{ DISCLAIMER I do not own the the vampire dairies characters, that goes back to the original creators. This plot is my own and done all by me. }
Butter.
A spicy, creamy, soft, and sweet aroma filled up the kitchen. Caroline Forbes was making her famous red cookies for tomorrow's picnic day with her twin daughters. Which was a strawberry - cheesecake flavored cookie. Now, Caroline Forbes was a proud self-taught baker, who loved to bake even if her skills were way off.
Baking or cooking was important to her it reminded her of her bittersweet moment of her childhood and just life in general. Caroline had diced up the strawberry into small pieces, she poured them into a bowl full of delicious sweet dough, her head snapped to the left as she heard small giggles coming her way.
"Mommy."
"Momma."
Caroline chuckled at her twin daughters excitement, as the girls made their way to the top the counter, were their eyes shine of excitement watching their mother make her famous red cookies that they loved so much. Caroline raised her eyebrows at them, "Yes, my little butterflies?"
The girls giggle at their mothers nickname for them. Not knowing the bigger meaning of it. When Caroline was a little girl butterflies have always enchanted her, it was something so fascinating for her to look at. She does not know if it was it's bright color or it's delicate wings. Or how something so small and fragile, lived it's own little life with admiration and full of wonder.
The glorious, but brief, life of the butterfly parallels the process of spiritual development and serves her a reminder that existence is fleeting. But she is immortal now everything change all she can do is live life in present and hope that she will be happy in life in future.
The girls looked at each other and back to their mother putting on their puppy eyes, "Can we help? Please."
Caroline shook her head in amusement at her babies, she guested Josie to join her right side as Lizzie joined her left side. Caroline grabbed a spoon a handed to both girls, "Okay my little butterflies I need you to listen up this most important part okay?"
Both girls shook their head fiercely in excitement that this the most important part, Caroline smiled at their excitement, "Okay this is the cheese-cake filling, we are going to pour the sugar and vanilla bean into that bowl," Caroline grabbed the metal bowl, as she help Lizzie measure the sugar into the bowl while Josie put the vanilla bean into the bowl.
Caroline position both girls in front of her as she helped them mixed the filling all together. When mix filling was done, Caroline folded the filling into the dough mixture carefully to not smush the strawberries. The dough was prepared, Caroline glanced at her two girls, "Okay, is time for bed."
Lizzie and Josie both pouted at that. Josie being the oldest by two minutes decide to speak out, "But momma, we want to eat some red cookies."
Lizzie put her best puppy eye look as she knew her mother never fell for it but it did not hurt to try. Caroline shook her head amused at their tempt to get away with it, "Uh. Uh. These red cookies are for our picnic tomorrow, okay so get ready for bed as I put these in the oven."
Girls let out a sign but did what their mother told them. Caroline grabbed a sheet pan as she rolled the dough into little balls and put them on the pan, each ball of dough having a certain distance from one another. She did it multiple times as she eventually she got the last bit of dough and put the in oven.
As she made her way upstairs to her daughters room. Opening the door she glance at the two twin size bed mush together. Caroline just smiled even though her daughters are completely different from one another they still love to be together.
Caroline walked up to them, "My little butterflies ready for bed?"
She glanced at their cute little stuff animals. Lizzie beamed up at her mother, "Mommy, can we get another story of the princess and her prince charming?"
Caroline chuckled at that, they really love those stories of the "princess" which is her and her "prince charming" which was Klaus. God did she miss him, she wonders if he does too after so many years of not seeing one another. Her thoughts were broken as Lizzie looked at her and Josie pleas at her mother, "Please, momma."
Caroline nodded at their request which cause the girls to squeal in excitement. Caroline moved to the edge of the bed, "Okay my little butterflies. This how they first met."
The girls look up at the mother, as she shifted closer to them, "The princess was laying on her bed, feeling sick and hopeless. Her moments of the past came rushing into her mind and she started to cry at the fact that she might never get to do what she wanted to do in life. But then," Caroline let out a little chuckle as the girls lean forward to her in anticipation.
"The prince arrive standing at the door, he help cure the princess with a special kind of magic. He held her across his chest holding her and telling her all the beautiful things of life. Of how much beautiful music, foods, and cities there are to discover and the princess wanted it all. At the end the princess was tired so she fell asleep in the arms of her prince feeling safe and the next morning there was a beautiful, shiny diamond bracelet waiting to be used."
Caroline finished her story, closing her eyes and thinking back of how he saved her when he didn't have to. She was just a kid back then with no idea of life, her views and morals were black and white. She shook her thoughts out and glanced at her girls.
She looked at how much adoration and love that their eyes held for her and she just smiles and kisses both their foreheads, and sings them their song, that she has been singing to them since they were in her belly.
Deep in the meadow, under the willow
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow
Lay down your head, and close your eyes
And they open, the sun will rise.
Here it's safe, here it's warm
Here the daisies guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you.
Caroline shut the door of their room and hearing the soft little snores fill her up as she made her way down stairs. She got there on time as the timer went out, she took out the cookies, cover them up for tomorrow and started to clean the kitchen. Eventually she finished and she sat down the couch letting her thoughts consume her. There are moments were she wishes she took up Klaus offer to see the world but god was she so vain back then.
She was lying to herself about everything. She was living a false fantasy in her head where she does not face the truth. She was not ready to accept, that what she wanted was not to be the the little good girl Caroline who always is good and is expected to make the right decision all the time. She was too naive or more the fact that she did not want to accept the fact that her kindness was taken for granted. Even when she try to move one and ignore everything she couldn't.
Because part of her was holding on to an image of herself that she wanted to be but she can not because that was before the trauma came. That person that she wanted to be doesn't exist anymore. And it is for the best because she is better now. How everything she went through good or bad happened for a reason.
Her friends. They're were not friends to begin with. The only person she talks to is Bonnie who is her sister in everything but blood and is the girls aunt. And their magic teacher as well as hers, since a goddam miracle happened, after the pregnancy she became heretic, even though it does not make sense to her. But hey is magic, nothing ever make sense.
She has small amount of contact with Stefan, who is traveling. Then Elena and Damon. A pair that hurt her the most. A friend that she once viewed as sister fell in love with her rapist, but for some dumb reason she dealt with it. She dealt with Damon presence after everything for her. Because of the love she once had for her friend. Damon, a man who haunts her dreams, how he prey on her youth and vulnerability at the time.
How she felt trapped in her mind, wishing for someone to hear her, to help her. But it never came. A part of her wishes him dead but it would make no difference because he won in the end as he wonders into her mind, just like the suffering her father put her through. Caroline grabbed the pillow and sobbed into it as her tears were flowing.
How she misses her mom. How part of her for a long time blamed her mother for everything, which was not right but she felt the need to blame someone, and at the time her mother made sense. Because her mother raised her to be kind, trusting, open and they all took that. They took her appearance as little blonde girl with no emotions, to be used over and over, who was too naive to say no.
Caroline shook her thoughts as she made her way to her room. Walking up the stair she heard the shorten breath and faintest snore fill her ears up. Caroline felt more tears come out of her. Her girls. Her babies. Her little Butterflies. They were the reason she is okay. Every pain she endure was so worth it, because they were worth everything and more. They were her reasons to live and die.
She has always taught them, even if there too young to understand, that they should be respected and be treated right. That they are powerful women, who deserves the world. God knows what this society does to young women filling them up with false expectations, of how they should look, act.
How their confidence would be tested, their ability to express emotion will be shielded. There is nothing more dangerous and powerful in the world than a women who knows her worth and value.
Opening her bedroom door, she changed and made her way to her bed. Before entering her bed, something caught her eye. Moving her head to night stand, it was a picture of her and Klaus. It was a moment no one knows about. A moment that she cherishes because it was just him and her.
She had once over heard one of his siblings say that he, the big bad hybrid has a sweet tooth. So she baked some chocolatey brownies and offered it to him. He gladly accepted and if it was even more possible Klaus had fallen in love with Caroline Forbes once again.
The picture captures his perfect dimples, her soft golden strands, and the sun that shine upon their skin. Caroline was so glad that one of her classmates captured that moment. She enter her bed, falling asleep with small smile on her face.
Thinking about how she couldn't wait for tomorrow, for her and daughters to eat their cookies and play around the fields of flowers. Just to hold them with her everything. And maybe just maybe a small text to Klaus, just to see if he is alright.
