Chapter 1: A Really Bad Day
It had started out like any other day for me. I had woken up early to get dressed and ready for work, leaving and locking my house behind before walking along the path that would take me to where I worked.
The walk was boring, it always was, but there was a comfort in the everyday routine of walking to work. It had been a cold morning with a slight mist coming in from the sea and cars passed me by as I walked along the footpath.
It was when I had begun to cross the road that some prick came barrelling down the road in their car. I turned to see it bearing down on me and then… darkness. I'd bet I didn't even feel the crunch of my bones breaking as the car hit me at high speeds. Now I found myself facedown on a cold floor, darkness swimming in my vision.
Then the sudden rush of air hit me as I sucked in a desperate lungful of life. Panting hard almost hyperventilating, I blinked my eyes a few times, wondering if I had woken up in hospital. Doubtless my parents, brother and sister would've dropped everything they were doing to rush to my side.
But the feeling of cold almost wet black stone in my face said to me that if this was a hospital, then they must've thrown me down in the basement thinking me a lost cause. That, or the old man was too much of a cheapskate to fork out for a room.
Then a loud booming voice announced itself, saying, "Awake at last, I see?" I flipped myself over onto my back, grunting and groaning painfully as I did so. This seemed to amuse the owner of the voice as it said, "And no worse for wear."
I slowly sat up, levering myself up with my arms that felt like wet noodles and I looked to see a frankly surprising figure standing before me. The figure was a tall black robed skeleton with a large harvest scythe in bony hands as empty black eye sockets bored down on while a toothy grin of yellow almost browned teeth gazed at me. If I had to guess, this guy was the actual Grim Reaper come to greet me and either send me to heaven or hell. Most likely hell in my case.
"Are you Death?" I blurted out. Nice work, foot in mouth as usual.
'Death' seemed to grin wider, if that were even possible, as he-she-it replied, "Yeah, I'm Death, the Grim Reaper, or whatever you fuckers call me."
The use of such an expletive surprised me and almost made me laugh. Most people would believe that the Grim Reaper was a polite and civilised being, or a completely psychotic megalomaniac that wanted to harvest every living soul in existence. So, to hear that expletive from the Grim Reaper itself was surprising.
The robe wearing skeleton seemed to pick up on my surprise and asked me, "What? Did you really expect me to be all civilised or a complete fucking nutter?"
"Uhh, n-no! Not really. I was just, uhh…" I hemmed and hawed awkwardly.
Death gave a raspy dry chuckle that sounded like a burlap sack being dragged across broken glass as it said, "Well, when you've been at this gig as long as I have been doing it, you'd probably be pretty sick and tired of it by now and just want to get on with your day."
"Well, I can kinda relate to that," I admitted as I managed to pull myself to standing position, fighting the urge to puke up breakfast as I did say.
"Yeah, I saw how you quit yer last job to go into something else," Death said. "Not that I blame ya, mind. Plenty of times I wanted to quit this gig and go into something else, but unlike you, I'm the only who can do this fucking job," it stated with an air of annoyance.
"So… what is this then?" I asked. "Are you here to judge me and decide where to send me?"
Death seemed to glare at me in annoyance before replying, "Look, kid. It ain't up to me to judge ya for wot ya do in your bleeding existence. I'm just doing my job. I do as I'm told, and I don't get paid very much to tell yer the truth."
"Oh. Sorry," I mumbled.
"But as it happens, you're a special case," Death then said to me.
"Special case? What does that even mean?" I asked, fear beginning to creep into my voice.
"Well, according to the Powers That Be, God or whatever deity you worship, a special case is an individual who is dead, but not quite," Death said to me.
"So, I can go back then?" I asked feeling a little less worried and a little more hopeful.
"That's thing, kid. You're well and truly dead in your world, and even if you could go back, you'd be wishing you were actually dead," Death told me. "I mean, if you saw the state you were in, you wouldn't be too keen on going back to your own world in that state," it said with a chuckle.
"Right. Idiot," I admonished myself before I asked, "So, is this gonna be a reincarnation thing of some sort? Do I get born as some little kid or animal in my own world and go from there?"
"Not really, no," Death said vaguely. "You'll going to another world. And it ain't exactly reincarnation what's gonna happen to ya, but you could look at it that way," it added.
"Why doesn't that fill me with confidence?" I said anxiously. "I'm gonna be reincarnated into a girl, aren't I?" I asked.
"You'll just have to find out, won't you?" Death replied. "You all set then? Any questions?" it asked.
"What kind of world am I going to?" I asked.
"I will say that it's a mishmash of worlds that you're familiar and leave it at that," Death said vaguely. "Any other questions?" And the way Death said that implied that any other questions were most unwelcome.
"No?" I offered tentatively.
"Good, Off you go then," Death said with a grin and bright white light filled my vision and I knew no more.

A/N: Just thought I'd give this a try and see if it gets any traction. Feel free to read and review, or do what everyone else does and just add it to your follows and favourites.
In other news, I'm working on a Game of Thrones/Power Girl (DC Comics) crossover and I've set up a poll on my profile of what the setting could be and thus far Conan the Barbarian/Red Sonja setting and a Marvel/DC Infinity Crisis setting are the most popular. For those of you who may be wondering, the Marvel/DC Infinity Crisis setting is inspired by the NSFW hentai game Infinity Crisis and I'll leave it at that.
The Conan/Red Sonja setting would fit with the GoT/ASOIAF side of things and I think George R.R Martin himself is a fan of Robert Howard's Hyborean Age work, plus Conan has bounced around from publisher to publisher numerous times and was owned at one by DC Comics before being bought by another publisher and it's only in recent years that Conan has been bought by Marvel Comics.
And I'm rambling again, so I'd better leave this here and see you all in the next one.
Be kind to one another,
Angry lil' elf.
