The world of Pokèmon. A world full of mysterious creatures that roam the lands, sky, and even the seas, existing alongside their human companions. Some people keep them as pets. Others prefer training them and using them for battle. Me? I love watching Pokèmon battles on TV. But I never thought that I'd one day be able to take part in them myself as a Pokèmon Trainer. Or how crazy my life would become afterwards...
The sun started to rise over the town of Pallet as an alarm went off. A hand reached over and stopped the alarm, letting out a small groan. A boy with shoulder length black hair and bright green eyes sat up in his bed, rubbing his eyes before slapping his face twice to wake himself up. "Okay! Time to start the day!" he said to himself as he got up and got dressed, his outfit consisting of a green shirt and black hoodie, black jeans and a pair of black and green sneakers. He grabbed his backpack before going over to the PC, taking out the potion he stored in it yesterday and placed it in his bag. "All set. Onwards to new adventure!" he said before running downstairs and out of the house. "See you later, mom!" he called out as he left. His mother looked towards the door, hoping to respond, but he was already gone. She chuckled. "So much energy." she said to herself. The boy ran towards the exit of town, smiling and excited to meet up with his Pokèmon friends.
My name is Isaiah Tailor. I'm ten years old, but I still haven't left to go on my own journey because my mom isn't too thrilled about the idea. After dad disappeared during one of his trips, she hasn't been a fan of the idea of something happening to me too. I don't want to make her upset by arguing, so I stick with the next best thing, making friends with the Pokèmon outside of town. It's typically not a good idea to step into the tall grass, but because of the bonds I've formed with the Pokèmon, I'm not seen as a threat.
Isaiah reached the exit of town and stepped into the tall grass, kneeling down as some wild Pokèmon approached, happy to see him. "Hey everyone. Glad to see me? Or are you only interested in this?" he said as he pulled out some Pokèmon food from his bag. The Pokèmon became excited, and Isaiah chuckled. "Figured." he said as he took out some food, giving it to the Pokèmon. He smiled as he watched them eat before he heard someone call out. "Hey kid! You shouldn't be out there!" a voice called. The voice startled the Pokèmon and they ran off. "No wait!" Isaiah called out before sighing and looking back at the one who called out. It was an older man with grey hair, wearing a purple shirt, brown dress pants, and brown dress shoes. The most noticeable thing about his outfit was his white lab coat. It was the town's professor.
"Oh! Hi there, Professor Oak!" Isaiah called out, smiling as he waved to him. "Wait... Isaiah?" Professor Oak asked as he reached him. "Yes sir! Isaiah Tailor!" Isaiah said. "Yes, you're Anthony's rival. What are you doing in the tall grass? You know how dangerous that is." Professor Oak said. "I was feeding the wild Pokèmon. They trust me." Isaiah said. "You were? And you say the wild Pokèmon trust you?" Professor Oak asked. "Yes sir. I love feeding the wild Pokèmon. They're my friends. Besides, because of my father's disappearance... my mom doesn't think it's a good idea for me to go on a journey... even if I wanted to..." Isaiah said. Professor Oak looked at him for a moment. "...So, you want to go on a journey, but you don't want to upset your mother... I see. But still, to be safer, you should have a Pokèmon of your own. Come with me to my lab." he said before he walked off. Isaiah tilted his head before ultimately deciding to follow the professor.
Once the two of them reached the lab, Isaiah followed the professor inside, passing a boy with brown hair and wearing a purple and black shirt and scarf, white shorts, and purple and black sneakers. Anthony Lyons. Isaiah's biggest rival since the two of them were kids. He noticed Professor Oak walk by. "Hey Professor! What took you so long?! First you say you want to meet with me, then you take forever to show up!" he said before noticing Isaiah behind him and he narrowed his eyes. "What's he doing here?" he asked. Isaiah looked over and narrowed his eyes as well. "Anthony." he said. "Isaiah." Anthony said as sparks began to fly between them. Professor Oak clapped. "Now now. Calm down you two." he said before looking at Anthony. "Now. I called you here for the same reason as Isaiah." he said before a light shined on the table next to him. "Here I have three Pokèmon." he said before going up and opened the three Pokèballs, releasing the Pokèmon inside. "The Grass Type Pokèmon, Bulbasaur, the Fire Type Pokèmon, Charmander, and the Water Type Pokèmon, Squirtle. Back when I was young, I was a Pokèmon Trainer. But these are the only ones I have left." he said before looking at them, smiling. "I've decided to entrust one of these Pokèmon to each of you. Isaiah, you can pick first." he said.
Isaiah's eyes lit up. "Really?! Thank you so much, Professor!" he said before taking a step towards the table but stopped. "Wait... I can't. My mom doesn't want me going on a journey, remember?" he asked. "I remember. But don't worry, Isaiah. I'll speak to your mom about it. Go ahead." Professor Oak said. Isaiah looked at him for a moment before nodding, letting his desire to be a Trainer get the best of him. "Yes sir. Thank you." he said before approaching the table. The three Pokèmon approached him, and he crouched down a bit, offering them a hand. "Hi there. It's nice to meet you all. The professor thinks that one of you should become my Pokèmon, but I want to leave the choice to you. Do any of you want to join me?" he asked. The three Pokèmon looked hesitant, but Charmander took a few steps forward and sniffed his hand before climbing on and up his shoulder. Isaiah chuckled and pet Charmander. "Charmander it is." he said. "Alright. Charmander's a little tricky to raise, so make sure to be patient with it." he said as he handed Isaiah Charmander's Pokèball. "And if you'd like, you can give your new Charmander a nickname." he said. "A nickname, huh? ...Nah, I think I'll keep Charmander's name as is. Right Charmander?" he said as he pets Charmander. "Char!" Charmander responded.
"What about you, Anthony? Who will you choose?" Professor Oak said. "Well, if he wants the Fire Type, I'll choose the better option in the Water Type!" Anthony said as he picked up Squirtle. "Squirtle Squirtle!" Squirtle said happily. Anthony chuckled before returning Squirtle Bulbasaur looked down, disappointed. "Don't worry, Bulbasaur. I'll make sure you get to a good person." Professor Oak said. Isaiah returned Charmander to its Pokèball before bowing to Professor Oak. "Thank you for the opportunity, Professor. I promise I'll take good care of Charmander." he said before looking at the Pokèball and he smiled wide. "I can't believe it. I'm finally an official Pokèmon Trainer! I should tell the Pokèmon outside of town!" He bolted towards the door.
"Hold it right there, Isaiah!" Anthony said. Isaiah stopped and turned to look at him. Anthony smirked and held up his Pokèball. "Don't think you're getting out of here without a battle. Since the both of us are trainers now, I think I'll use the opportunity to show you just how much better I am compared to you!" he said. Isaiah smiled and faced him, holding up his own Pokèball. "You think you're better despite us getting our Pokèmon at the same time? Fine. If you really want to get beaten, I accept your challenge!" he said before looking at the Professor. "Would it be okay if we battle in here, Professor?" he asked. Professor Oak chuckled. "Of course. The Pokèmon I've given you have been in here for most of their lives. So, they know what they can or can't touch." he said.
"Awesome! Then let's get this battle started! Squirtle, appear before me!" Anthony said as he threw Squirtle's Pokèball, causing it to open and release the Pokèmon inside. "Squirtle!" it said. Isaiah took a deep breath as he raised Charmander's Pokèball. "This is it! My first battle! Let's win it in style, Charmander!" he thought. "Okay! Charmander, game on!" he said as he threw the Pokèball and his Pokèmon appeared. "Char!" Charmander said. "Alright! Let's go on the attack! I should tell it to use a move! ...Wait, what are its moves?" he thought. He looked at the Professor. "Um, Professor? What are Charmander's moves?" he asked. "You don't know the moves of your own Pokèmon? I have got this in the bag! Squirtle, use Tail Whip!" Anthony said. Squirtle nodded and used the move, causing Charmander's defense to drop. "Crap! He knows what he's doing! What am I supposed to do?! I can't win if I can't give Charmander proper commands!" Isaiah thought.
Charmander looked back at Isaiah. "Charmander!" it said. Isaiah looked at it and it showed him its claws before swiping them. Isaiah tilted his head before getting an idea. "Scratch?" he said. Charmander nodded and charged, scratching Squirtle. "Nice!" Isaiah said. Charmander looked back and smiled before its expression changed and it growled. "Oh! Growl!" Isaiah said. Charmander nodded and faced Squirtle before using the move, lowering the attack power of it. "That's so cool! So, you can damage your opponents with Scratch or lower its attack power with Growl!" Isaiah said. Charmander nodded. "Tsk. You seriously needed your Pokèmon to tell you its moves? You're hopeless. Squirtle, use Tail Whip again!" Anthony said. Squirtle used the move without hesitation. "Okay. Now that I know your moves, we can do this! Use Scratch!" Isaiah said. "Please. I'll show you a real move! Squirtle, use Tackle!" Anthony said. The two Pokèmon charged and attacked each other before turning to face each other, their game faces on. Isaiah and Anthony gave each other the same look.
"We're not giving up! Charmander, use Scratch again!" Isaiah said. "Tackle again!" Anthony said. The two Pokèmon attacked each other again. This time, both of them looked to take bigger hits, but were still standing. "This battle is down to the wire... The both of them look to have lots of promise..." Professor Oak thought. The rivals stared each other down, as well as their Pokèmon staring each other down. Professor Oak chuckled. "I definitely made the right choice with those two." he thought. "Let's end this!" both Isaiah and Anthony said. "Use Scratch!" Isaiah said. "Tackle!" Anthony said. The Pokèmon immediately followed their Trainers commands and charged at each other a final time. Charmander turned back and it and Isaiah made eye contact. Isaiah smiled and the two nodded at each other. Once the two Pokèmon were close enough, Squirtle went in headfirst, and Charmander sidestepped. Both Anthony's and Squirtle's eyes widened as Charmander used the attack and Squirtle went down, its eyes becoming swirly, signifying the end.
Professor Oak approached. "Squirtle is unable to battle. Charmander wins. So, the victory goes to Isaiah." he said. "Alright!" Isaiah said going over and hugging Charmander. "Nice work, Charmander! You did great! Thanks for the assist, too! I don't think I would've been able to properly battle with you without it!" he said. "Charman!" Charmander said in response. Anthony sighed and returned Squirtle to its Pokèball. "Whatever. I'll make Squirtle stronger by having it battle. Make no mistake, Isaiah! You just got lucky! If Squirtle was a little faster, you would've lost for sure!" he said before storming out of the lab. Isaiah tilted his head and Professor Oak sighed. "Anyways... return Charmander to its Pokèball and I'll heal it up for you." he said. "Of course!" Isaiah said before raising Charmander's Pokèball. "Okay, Charmander. Return." he said.
Charmander returned, and Professor Oak took the Pokèball, placing it on a machine that healed Charmander. As the machine deactivated, he picked up the Pokèball. "Here you go. Now. Why don't you start small by heading to Viridian City? It's the town past the route here in Pallet Town." he suggested. "Sure thing! It'll give me a chance to show Charmander to my Pokèmon friends!" Isaiah said before bolting out of the lab. "I'll be back soon, Professor! Thanks again for the chance to become a trainer!" he said. Professor Oak smiled before looking at the desk behind him. "...I'll finish up here and go talk to his mom about the matter..." he said to himself.
Isaiah made his way to Route 1, happily showing them his new Pokèmon companion as he made his way through the Route, meeting with a few other people that gave him helpful tips and tricks about the Route. Because he couldn't bring himself to battle the wild Pokèmon on the Route, it didn't take long for him to reach Viridian City. "Ha! Quick and easy! Now let's have a look around." he said. A bit of looking around soon led him to a large building known as a gym, but one of the locals said the leader wasn't around and he wasn't going to be for a while, so Isaiah decided to leave it be for now. His exploration of his town soon led him to what the locals called a PokèMart, a store that sells various items that are useful for Pokèmon. He excitedly made his way there and opened the door. He went up and asked the clerk about what they had available and got into a friendly conversation where the clerk mentioned a parcel that had arrived for Professor Oak, but the delivery guy wasn't available, and they couldn't leave the counter. Isaiah decided to take the package himself and he happily returned to Professor Oak's lab.
"Professor Oak! I'm back!" Isaiah said. Professor Oak looked back. "Isaiah! That was quick! How was Viridian City?" he said. "It was awesome! There was a building focused on healing Pokèmon, something called a Pokèmon Gym, and even a store to buy things that help Pokèmon! That's actually why I'm back so soon. The clerk at the shop had this for you." Isaiah said as he handed him the parcel. Professor Oak chuckled. "Thanks. Sounds like you had fun. And how's Charmander?" he asked. "Charmander's great! Here! Check it out!" Isaiah said before releasing Charmander. "Though, the two of us didn't battle any of the Pokèmon outside of town. I just couldn't bring myself to fight my friends." Isaiah said. Professor Oak looked at him for a moment before smiling. "You've got a good heart, Isaiah. I think going on a journey around the region would let you experience a lot more than what you've seen in Viridian. That's why I'd like to make you an offer." he said, but before he could continue, someone walked in.
"Hey, Professor! What'd you call me here for?!" Anthony said before noticing Isaiah and sighed. "Why is he still here?" he asked. "Ah! Anthony! Perfect timing! I wanted to ask you the same thing." Professor Oak said before going over to his desk and picking up something, showing it to them. "This is my newest invention. It's called a Pokèdex. It can record data on the Pokèmon you've caught. It's basically a Pokèmon encyclopedia." he said before approaching and holding them out to the two new Trainers. "Isaiah. Anthony. Would you like to travel the region of Kanto and fill up the Pokèdex?"
Isaiah's eyes lit up. "Really? So, if I agreed, I could meet and become friends with Pokèmon all over the region?!" he asked. "Yep. And filling up the Pokèdex would be a great benefit for me as well as a researcher on Pokèmon." Professor Oak said. Anthony took one of the Pokèdexes. "Sure thing. It gives me a reason to find and catch a bunch of strong Pokèmon. But I really don't need Isaiah's help, so I'll take this mission on solo. Thanks Professor. Peace." he said before leaving the lab. Professor Oak sighed. "Oh boy. He sure is confident. Hopefully that doesn't lead to him getting into trouble." he said before turning to Isaiah. "How about you, Isaiah? Would you like to take on the challenge?" he asked. Isaiah happily nodded. "Of course!" he said before taking the Pokèdex. "Great. As a thank you, please take these as a starting gift." Professor Oak said as he handed Isaiah five Pokèballs. "Catching a Pokèmon is fairly simple. All you have to do is battle and weaken it and toss a Pokèball. But be careful. If you knock out a Pokèmon, you won't be able to catch it. Though, considering your friends with the Pokèmon outside of town, I'm sure you could catch them without having to battle. Now. Get out there and enjoy your journey!" he said. "Yes sir!" Isaiah said excitedly before turning to leave, only for someone to storm into the lab.
"WHERE IS HE?!" Isaiah's mother yelled. Isaiah turned to look at her. "Mom?!" he asked. "There you are! I can't believe you not only got a Pokémon but left town without my permission!" his mother yelled. "But mom—" Isaiah was cut off. "But nothing! You're returning the Pokémon and we're leaving!" she yelled. "But—" Isaiah was once again cut off. "I SAID BUT NOTHING!" his mother yelled before grabbing his arm and she started dragging him out, causing him to accidentally drop Charmander's Pokéball. Charmander looked at him worriedly as Isaiah tried to talk to his mom, but she was dead set on ignoring him. Charmander ran over and clung to Isaiah's leg, trying to help him. Isaiah looked at Charmander and he closed his eyes before pulling his arm away from his mom. "NO!" he yelled.
His mom stopped and turned to look at him, stunned. "Excuse me?" she asked. "Mom... I get it. You're worried that I'll disappear like Dad did if I go on a journey. And ever since I turned ten... I tried not to argue because I knew you didn't want it. But..." He looked at her with a serious face. "Honestly... right now... I don't care what you think!" he said. His mom's eyes widened. "Now you listen—" This time, she was the one that was cut off. "No, it's your turn to listen! I understand that you're worried about me, Mom, but the fact of the matter is... I want this! I want to travel and meet and make friends with all kinds of Pokémon! I want to go on a journey!" Isaiah said.
His mom gasped a bit, thinking back to before his father left on his last adventure. "My dream... it's to make friends with as many Pokémon as I can." She grits her teeth. "I don't care what you want! I'm not going to lose you like I lost your father! I refuse! Now. We're. Going. Home! Do not make me repeat myself!" she yelled. Isaiah picked up Charmander and its Pokéball before looking at his mom. "...No. Charmander and I are going. And you can't stop me." he said. "You wanna bet I can't stop you?!" she yelled before approaching. Charmander jumped out of his arms and scratched his mother's face. She screamed and she covered her mouth. Isaiah quickly returned Charmander before sighing looking at his mom. "I'm. Going. Mom." he said. His mother looked at him for a moment before gritting her teeth and storming out of the lab. "This is far from over." she muttered as she left. Isaiah sighed and looked back to the Professor, smiling. "I'm heading out now! Thanks again for the opportunity!" he said excitedly before running out of the lab. "This is it! This is the moment... my adventure truly begins!" he thought. "Alright! Onwards to new adventure!"
To be continued...
