A/N: This story has been inspired by Kenobi by John Jackson Miller. Reading about Obi Wan's life during exile was really interesting and I wondered what it would be like if Padme had survived. Thank you for taking the time to reading this and if you feel so inclined, leave a comment. Hope you have a great day. Now onto the story. -Nikki

Chapter 1

"LIAR!"

"No!" Padme Amidala cried out as she stumbled back away from the man in front of her. Her eyes widened with fear as she spun around to see Obi Wan Kenobi standing in the doorway of her J-type Naboo Star skiff. Obi Wan looked past her at Anakin Skywalker, then looked at her with deep concern. He hesitantly stood there, unsure how to approach the delicate situation.

"You're with him!" Padme spun back around to face her husband. His lip curled hatefully as his eyes burned yellowish orange. Fire danced dangerously in them. Gone was the blue Padme had once found comfort in. Padme realized that the man she loved was gone. Anakin would never hurt her, yet here he was. Not only had he created a numb aching hole in her chest where her heart used to be, but he also physically lashed out. Anakin stretched out a hand and curled it into a fist. Rage flooded through him as he tightened his fist.

"You brought him here to kill me!" Anakin growled.

His accusations pierced into her very soul. She tried to speak, to say that he was wrong and that she loved him more than anything or anyone. She wanted to plead for their child, to beg for their safety above anything else. At one point, Anakin Skywalker had grinned from ear to ear, calling the child within her the biggest blessing and gift they had ever received. But she couldn't utter a word. When she tried gasping for air, her body didn't seem to be able to cooperate.

"Ani- Our- ba-by" She tried to say, but only gasps and strange sounds came out. Her mind became fuzzy as her vision started to blur.

"Let go of her Anakin!" Obi Wan warned, sensing the distress coming from her. If he didn't do anything, Anakin could kill her and the baby. But Anakin didn't let go. He didn't even move a hair. The moment had come for him to get physically involved.

"LET HER GO." Obi Wan rushed down the ship's ramp. He tried to catch Padme as Anakin finally let her go and she fell to the ground, but he didn't reach her in time. Her body hit the ground hard, her head hitting it hard as she fell unconscious.

"Don't touch my wife!" Anakin yelled as he started to pace back and forth like a crazed animal.

Obi Wan crouched down, placing a hand on Padme's forehead, mentally asking that she would be alright. After reaching out through the Force, he sensed that she was okay for the moment, but there was some physical damage that needed to be treated. As for the baby she was carrying, he had no idea.

"She needs medical attention. Your child might too."

"You aren't taking them away from me!"

Obi Wan stood up and took a few steps forward, placing himself between the power-crazed man and Padme's limp body. "You have done that yourself. Anakin, Palpatine is manipulating you. Don't you see that? He's turned you into a monster. A monster who has destroyed the entire life of Anakin Skywalker. You have turned Padme away from yourself, and with her, your child."

Anakin laughed spitefully in response. "You're just afraid of the power of the dark side, Obi Wan. The Jedi were weak and stupid. But not the Sith. We have unleashed the real power of the Force."

"If the real power of the Force is used to force choke your pregnant wife, then there is some error there."

If looks could kill, Obi Wan knew he'd be dead in an instant. And it destroyed him to see the man standing before him. The man that he had known and loved was gone, and in its place was the greatest evil and loss he had ever experienced. He had not only failed Anakin, but he had failed Qui Gon. The boy that Qui Gon had entrusted him to had morphed into the same horrid thing that ended the deceased Jedi's life. Even after trying to please Qui Gon his entire life, Obi Wan knew that Qui Gon would only be disappointed. He let his former master down in a way so big that nothing could possibly be mended.

"Don't make me kill you." Those words cut Obi Wan like a dagger. And he felt his heart break when Anakin ignited his lightsaber.

"I am so sorry Qui Gon." Obi Wan whispered as he reluctantly drew his own weapon.

Obi Wan wearily trudged up the hill to where the landing platform was. Anakin's screams were fresh in his mind. He just had done the hardest thing he had ever done in his entire life. He abandoned the man who used to be his best friend, leaving him to die. He picked up his pace when Padme's ship came into view. His heart started pounding. She needed help. It appeared that she had been moved inside the ship, probably by one of her droids, and was waiting for Obi Wan's return. He broke out into a sprint towards the ship, knowing they needed to get to a medical facility soon. He wasn't going to lose someone else close to him. He wasn't going to make that mistake again. No, his heart was already hurting enough.

Once they were in space, he sent a message to Master Yoda and Senator Bail Organa, reporting an urgency for medical care. When coordinates for Polis Massa were programmed in the computer and the ship was set on auto pilot, Obi Wan ended the call and quickly made his way to the back of the ship to check on Padme. She groaned as she wearily opened her eyes. It was a confusing sight to see Obi Wan looking down at her. It took a moment for her to realize what had happened. Then realization sunk in.

"Obi Wan? Is Anakin alright?" She murmured as she tried to sit up, but quickly realized she didn't have the strength to.

He just frowned in response, gently placing a hand on her forehead, using the Force to make her fall unconscious once again until they arrived at Polis Massa. They arrived a few hours later. Padme was still unconscious, so Obi Wan gently and carefully carried her in his arms. Senator Bail Organa looked alarmed when he saw pregnant Padme, appearing to be unconscious in the arms of a Jedi Master.

"Right this way Master Jedi." Bail Organa said as he quickly led Obi Wan through the facility. Padme began to stir as she was laid down on a medical bed. A few medical droids quickly tended to her while Obi Wan and Bail Organa waited with Yoda outside. Once Padme changed into a hospital gown and had been examined, the Jedi and Senator Organa stepped into the hall and waited behind a transparent divider wall.

"I can't believe Padme is pregnant." Bail said in shock.

Obi Wan nodded his head. "It was certainly a surprise to me as well. I had a feeling that she and Anakin were romantically involved, but I didn't realize until recently that she was expecting and Anakin's the father."

Yoda stared at the two human men. "Complicated times these are. Heavily dependent, the Galaxy's fate is on us. Important roles Skywalker's children will play" He looked at Padme through the transparent glass wall.

She was now sitting up and listening concerned to what the med droid was saying as she was given some medication. Then her jaw dropped and eyes practically bulged out of her head when she heard the last thing the med droid said. She sat in shock as the med droid headed towards the open doorway into the hall. They all looked at the droid in worry and concern.

"The Senator has received some internal bruising along her neck and will suffer some head pain due to the blow to her head, but the babies are perfectly alright."

Obi Wan sighed in relief once he heard the news. Padme was going to be fine along with her…? What did the med droid say? Obi Wan's eyes grew the size of banthas as Bail Organa voiced the exact thought Obi Wan had.

"Babies?" Bail Organa asked in disbelief. He was already struggling to comprehend that his colleague and friend was secretly pregnant, so wrapping his mind around the fact that she was having not just one, but two babies was near impossible.

"Yes. She's carrying twins." The medical droid replied calmly before turning around and going back into the room to Padme.

"What will happen to her and her children?" Obi Wan now inquired.

Yoda thought for a moment before answering. "To Tatooine they will go. Watch over them, you will, Obi Wan."

Obi Wan nodded his head. "I will protect Anakin's family with my life Master. Anakin will never look for them on Tatooine."

"It will be good for you all to stay secluded. Stay reserved, and hidden. Take minimal risks, and refrain from drawing a great deal of attention to yourselves." Bail added.

"Training I have for you in your seclusion. Unlock the mysteries of how to communicate with Qui Gon, you will."

That left Obi Wan flabbergasted.

"I can speak with Qui Gon? Master? I never thought that would be possible."

"Teach you, he will."

A swarm of emotions flooded through Obi Wan. The man Obi Wan had so dearly missed and yearned to talk to for the past 13 years would be communicating with him. He just couldn't wrap his mind around it. There was so much to tell him… so much. Just then, Padme came waddling out into the hall, still in her med gown. Obi Wan shifted his attention to her.

"Padme, congratulations on the twins." Bail said encouragingly.

Padme gave him a small smile. "Thank you Bail. I don't know how I didn't think of it before though. I look like I'm ready to pop, but I'm only 5 months." Her voice sounded a bit horse, but it was expected after what she had just gone through. Then she turned to Obi Wan, knowing very well he had something to say.

"We're going to Tatooine. We think that will be the safest place for you and your children. I'm going with you to watch over your family."

Padme visibly winced at the mention of Tatooine. That place wasn't exactly full of happy memories for her. The last time she was there… she shuddered, not wanting to even think about it.

"I guess I have to trust your judgment." Padme reluctantly said. She wrapped her arms around her belly protectively.

"We'll stay the night here to make sure you are well enough to travel, then depart in the morning." Obi Wan added. "So you should probably get some rest."

Padme nodded her head. "Obi Wan, I know that there is still good in Anakin." With that, she turned around and the med droid led her down the hall to a different room for her to stay in. All of the men stood in silence for a few moments.

"Obi Wan, what… what happened to Mustafar?" Bail asked gently but hesitantly. His gut told him it wasn't good by any means.

Anakin's words echoed against the walls of Obi Wan's mind. He closed his eyes and drew a weary hand to cover them, his hand shaking a little bit. "I don't feel ready to share that, Bail. I need some time." His voice shook a little too. "If you'll excuse me, I think I'll try to get some rest. Good night, Master Yoda, Senator."

They nodded at Obi Wan as he headed down the same direction Padme had gone, looking for a vacant room. Senator Bail Organa and Jedi Master Yoda also retired. Today was a long day, but tomorrow would be even longer.

8 standard hours later, the med center was abuzz with Jedi and Senators awake. Padme stepped out of her room in a pair of loose white trousers, a long sleeved flowy white tunic and her boots from the previous day. After finding some supplies around the medical facility, Obi Wan Kenobi and Padme Amidala departed, saying their farewells to Yoda and Bail Organa. Padme fell asleep almost immediately in the copilot seat next to Obi Wan. Obi Wan gave her a sad smile. Even though he felt horrible, he couldn't imagine what she was currently feeling. Anakin may have been his friend and like a brother, but he was Padme's husband and the father of her unborn children.

He slowly closed his eyes, sighing as he rested his hand on the dashboard, mentally preparing for the task ahead. This wasn't anything like a typical Jedi mission. He was dedicating the rest of his life to protecting the Skywalker family. And he felt the weight of it sink in. The future depended on him to not fail, which was terrifying. He wasn't sure if he could handle it. But as his thoughts began to overwhelm him, he remembered to take a deep breath. The Force was his ally. He wasn't alone. And with a bit of new found strength from that reminder, he opened his eyes and started the ship. A few minutes later, they were heading towards space and a new chapter of not just their lives, but of history.
