Forget-Me-Not
Prologue
March 1965
Elizabeth Matthews
Age 5
"I'm not sure about this Lizzy, mum and dad will kill us if they catch us out of bed." Lizzy rolled her eyes at Margaret's worry. Sure, mum and dad had told them it was getting too dangerous for them to be going anywhere alone, but what they didn't know wouldn't hurt them.
Lizzy scrambled over the windowsill and dropped down into the bush below. Turning back she whispered, "I didn't ask you to come, Margaret, why don't you go back to Ellie, she's just as boring as you." Her younger sister always followed after Ellie like a lost puppy. Just because she was older didn't mean she knew what was best.
Margaret pouted, but Lizzy didn't stick around long enough to see. Once firmly on her feet, she hurried off toward the wood which lay behind her home. She said she would meet with him only one more time. He had made her very cross when she spoke to him last, asking her all about her sisters, telling her to bring them to meet him. But he promised to show her something fun tonight, and Lizzy's curiosity got the better of her, despite her huffing.
Besides, it was a full moon and the trees gave the best view.
Once she had made it far enough into the trees, her path lit by the moonlight, Lizzy picked her favourite tree and climbed up and up, so high that if her mother saw how far off the ground she was, she would have a fit.
The moon looked very pretty indeed, and Lizzy settled onto a firm branch with her back to the trunk, admiring it through the leaves. She wrapped her arms around her knees to try and stop the cold nipping.
"Lizzy!" Ellie's voice called out.
Lizzy groaned, her peaceful night ruined. Huffing, she ignored her sister as she continued to call out.
"Lizzy, come back now! Or I'm telling mum and dad!"
Lizzy leaned back into the shadows as both her sisters came into view.
Margaret you little snitch.
Lizzy scowled, arms crossing over her chest. They're going to ruin everything!
Then she heard it, a horrible howling snarl. Gutteral, animalistic.
Bloodthirsty.
And then everything changed forever.
