Suppressed Memories

Chapter 2

After Sonic came out of his thoughtful state, he finished his waffles and decided to go on a run. He thought maybe it'd clear his head, or at least distract him for the time being. He ran through the forest, kicking up dirt and fallen leaves as he did so.

It was Autumn in Green Hills and Sonic loved this season. He loved the way the leaves turned all different shades of red and orange. He liked the smell and taste of hot cocoa when it begins to get colder, and the smell of pumpkin and cinnamon was always his favorite. He especially loved when people would rake leaves into piles, perfect for jumping into. He snickered at that thought. Tom would always yell at him when he did that and tell him to rake them back up. It didn't matter though, he'd just jump right back into the pile.

His thoughts were keeping him distracted, so much so that he tripped on the root of a tree and fell hard onto his face. He groaned and slowly got up, rubbing his head. "This is why you don't think and drive," he said with a pained chuckle. He held his head in his hands for a moment until the pain subsided, in which he then looked up to see where he was.

He was in front of the old dirt cave he used to reside in. He began to feel nostalgic, he lived for many years in that cave, had many memories from it like how he'd grab produce from the town grocer and pretend they were people. It was sad to be honest, he was so young but deprived of any socialization, no friends and no family...until he met Tom and Maddie. He smiled thinking about that, they did so much for him and he was happy to call them his parents.

Sonic looked at the cave in front of him, contemplating wether he should look inside it or not, ultimately he decided to walk in, see how the place is holding up. He crawled in through the hidden entrance and dropped to the ground. When he landed he dusted himself off and began to look around. He was confused, it looked like it'd been lived in since he was gone. There was a few articles of clothing set on the floor, a palette of blankets and pillows, and what looked like a deck of cards.

"Has somebody been living here?" he wondered aloud. He became curious and wanted to inspect further but knew it'd be wrong to intrude on someone's privacy. He thought of ways he could justify going through this stranger's stuff. "It used to be my home...so I should have a right to look, and it's not like I'm gonna break anything, I'll make sure to put everything right back where I got it from," he reasoned.

His curiosity got the better of him and he walked over to the clothes on the floor and began inspecting them. It was mostly a bunch of plain large t-shirts. The only piece of clothing that was different out of them all was a small dress that looked to be small enough for a toddler to wear. It was red with puffy sleeves and had white trim all over. The strongest thing about it was the huge cut at the side of it, like it had been too small for someone and they had to cut themselves out of it.

Sonic wondered if it was a child that was living here, if so he'd need to let Tom know so they can help the kid out.

Sonic moved on and began to examine the deck of cards. They were neatly tied together with a yellow silk ribbon. They didn't look like a deck of playing cards, they were much bigger and longer and had a more intricate pattern on the back depicting a crescent moon among the sun and there were symbols all around it. He decided not to undo the ribbon, knowing he wouldn't be able to tie it back as neatly as it was before. He didn't know what the cards were but decided to move on and sat them down back onto the dirt floor.

Sonic then looked over to the palette in the floor, maybe he could find some pieces of hair so they can track down the possible kid that's living here. He looked through the blankets and only found crumbs of food and pieces of dirt. He winced at the thought of having to live in these conditions again. He then looked to the pillows. He inspected them one at a time, turning them over and over to make sure he checked the whole pillow. When he got to the last pillow, he found something. Poking into the pillow was a long pink...quill?

Sonic was shocked. Had there been someone like him living on earth, maybe someone of his own kind? The color of the quill, however, sparked his brain and reminded him of why he went on the run in the first place. Could it be...her?

Sonic was too overwhelmed with thoughts and decided to high tail it outta there before its resident returned. He restored all the pillows and blankets to their original place and made his way out. He made a mental note to continue checking on the cave and began to run back home.

Later that evening, Tom and Maddie decide to have a bit of a family game night. They played video games like Mario Kart and Just Dance. Once the festivities were over, Maddie looked up at the clock, it was 10:45 p.m. and she decided it was time for bed.

They all began to clean up the living room and vacuum the popcorn that had fallen to the floor and once everything was clean, they said their 'goodnights' and headed off to bed. Sonic was almost excited to enter the sleep realm again, hoping he'd get some more info on who the pink hedgehog was.

As Sonic drifted off to a deep sleep, he began to dream.

Sonic found himself atop a tree, next to him was that peculiar pink hedgehog. They were staring up at the stars, having a merry time while the girl pointed out constellations. "That one is called the Great Chaos, the echidnas think it looks like the fabled water god. Oh! And over there is my favorite one, I don't know what it's called but it looks like a little pig!" the girl giggled as she pointed towards said constellation.

Sonic chuckled, "it does look like a pig!" Sonic exclaimed. He pointed at a different collection of stars, "That one over there looks like a cheese sandwich." he said as he licked his lips. The girl beside him giggled," I think you're just hungry, maybe Longclaw has dinner ready by now" she said as she began to get up from the tree branch they were on. Sonic got up as well and gave a nervous chuckle, "yeah, I guess I am a little hungry," his stomach growled as he finished his sentence.

Sonic dusted himself off and sent the girl a challenging smirk, "how about we have a race there?" The girl scoffed, " that wouldn't be fair! You have super speed!" Sonic thought for a split second, "alright, then you can have a minute head start." "Hmmm...deal!" she said as they shook hands.

"On the count of three," Sonic held up three fingers and began to count down, "one...two...three! Go!" As the last word was uttered, the girl began to run. As she was disappearing from Sonic's view, everything began to disappear. He was beginning to wake up, even though he didn't want to. He felt a strong sadness as the girl disappeared and reality began to hit him. The boy began to call out the girl's name "Am-!

Sonic awoke from his slumber, sad that the dream ended. The only big piece of information he got from it was a little more of her name, it started with an a and an m. How was that supposed to help?! He groaned and fell back onto his pillow as he held his hands over his eyes in annoyance. Just a few more seconds of sleep and he would've heard it, he would've known her name, but alas, it was as if his mind didn't want him to know. As if she was a painful memory for him.

He didn't understand, she seemed sweet, why wouldn't he want to remember her? He'd have to sleep again to find out, or at least he thought. He didn't know if these sequences were actual memories, maybe he was just going insane, but he hoped the girl was real.

He hoped he'd see her again the next night.

He hoped for more pieces to the puzzle, more answers.

If only Longclaw was here, he could ask her, surely she'd know, but instead he was gonna have to figure this out himself, and he was determined.
