Arthur Owns Up

Written by Lee Pressman

The sun shone brightly over the yard at Norramby.

"Come along, guys!" Arthur called out, as he hurriedly shunted some trucks into line.

"Oof! Ow! Ouch! Stop that!" the trucks cried out.

"Why are you going so rough on us?" one demanded.

Arthur smiled.

"Just need you all to be ready and in line in enough time to get you off to market!"

He thought for a moment, then sighed.

"Ah," he marveled, "and filled with crates of fish too! I just love the smell of fish! Just think about it; as you arrive by the quayside and smell the fresh sea air!"

He sighed wonderingly, but the trucks didn't reciprocate.

"Pheweee!" they groaned with disgust.

But Arthur just laughed, as he continued to shunt them along.

In no time at all, Arthur had the trucks lined up by the village quayside, ready for Saul the Container Crane to fill them up with crates of fish!

"Good morning, Arthur!" Saul greeted.

"Morning, Saul!"

"And how are things this morning?!"

"Pretty swell, actually!" Arthur admitted. "Spent the first bit of it shunting these trucks in line!"

Saul laughed, then listened to a sound of a familiar horn, sighing familiarly.

"Good morning, Bulstrode!" he greeted.

"It isn't a good morning!" the barge moaned. "Operator got me up early to head to Knapford Harbor and the crane's arm was broken so I had to wait 45 minutes for my hull to be loaded so that I could be on my way again! Couldn't get a nap either with all the noise and bustle there!"

The trucks giggled quietly to each other at Bulstrode's plight.

"Gee, he's crabbby!"

"I'd say!"

"Ah!" Arthur sighed in response, beaming at the barge. "But look on the bright side, Bulstrode. At least all this fish is being put off to good use once it gets to market. And all in good time too!"

"Huh!" Bulstrode huffed. "Doesn't make a difference to me!"

But Arthur didn't mind Bulstrode; he kept daydreaming about the fish all the while long as his trucks were loaded. However, as the time passed, he was also beginning to grow a little anxious…

"Hey, Saul!" he called out. "How much longer do you think you'll be?"

"Just loadin' up the last truck here, Arthur, ol' pal! Shan't be long!"

"Well, please, hurry up!" he begged. "I do want to keep to time this morning and get these trucks off to other engines to take to market!"

Saul smiled as he loaded the next shipment of crates into Arthur's last truck.

"Now, mind you," Saul advised, "these crates are very delicate and fragile and need to be handled with care!"

"What's the matter, Saul?!" Bulstrode gruffly taunted. "Tryna avoid the root cause of another delay?!"

"A delay?!" Arthur cried out.

"Not on my watch!" Saul assured them both.

He quickly swooped the next load of crates and edged quickly across the quay!

"Serenity Saul! Serenity Saul!" he muttered to himself the whole way.

Arthur knew that there was nothing he could do about getting Saul to work faster, so he kept daydreaming about the fish to pass the time..

"Ah!" he sighed, as Saul continued to load his trucks.

At last, Saul was down to the last load of crates!

"Last batch here, Bulstrode!" he called out. "Ready to go!"

"At last!" Arthur called out, widening his eyes. "Ready, driver?"

His driver awoke from his cab and prepared to get him started.

Arthur took Saul's words as a sign that it was time to go and quickly started on his way.

"Wait, Arthur!" Saul shouted out, racing across the quayside. "I wasn't finished yet! Come back!"

"Huh?" Arthur thought, and applied his brakes hard.

"Woah!" Saul wailed, and jerked to a halt.

A fish crate dropped from Saul's haul and went flying into the air…

"Uh oh," Arthur groaned, and shut his eyes.

and landed right into a nearby shed…

"Crikey!" Saul gasped, as he watched the shed collapse.

and some splat all over Bulstrode too!

Bulstrode gasped as a face hit his face.

"Cursed!" he splattered, as he angrily spit the fish from his face.

Saul tried hard not to laugh at Bulstrode, but the trucks managed a slight giggle amongst each other.

"Oh, no," Arthur groaned. "This was all my fault!"

"Huh!" Bulstrode huffed, as Saul eyed the tank engine hard in the face.

"Are you okay, Arthur?" he asked.

"No," Arthur frowned. "I'm sorry, guys! I never meant for this to happen! I promise, I'll do something about it later after I'm done sorting out all these trucks! Please, don't tell anyone in the meantime!"

"But, Arthur…" Saul suggested.

"Please, Saul!" Arthur begged.

Saul sighed.

"Affirmative! But please, Arthur, do hurryback!"

"Oh, I will!" Arthur promised. "It shouldn't take too long!"

And he rushed off with his trucks, who giggled and sang the whole way.

"Arthur's gonna get in trouble! Arthur's gonna get in trouble!"

Saul groaned.

"Golly, I hope he doesn't, Bulstrode!"

"Huh! It'd serve him right! Silly tank engine!" the barge murmured, as he made his way out of port.

"Oh, Arthur, please be back soon!" Saul whimpered, as he surveyed the mess that was made.

Arthur spent the rest of the morning shunting fish trucks, but he couldn't help the bad feeling in his boiler!

"Oh, dear," he groaned to himself, as he shunted the first line of trucks into place. "This is terrible! I've never caused an accident before! Not here at Norramby!"

He proceeded to have the trucks lined up behind Edward.

"Now all of that's changed!" he continued, as the trucks were coupled up.

He gasped suddenly at the sound of Edward's whistle.

"Oh no!" he gasped. "Was that out loud?"

He blushed a slight shade as he backed away.

… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

As Arthur shunted his next train into place, the trucks sang out.

"Arthur's gonna get into trouble! Arthur's gonna get into trouble!"

"Stop…SINGING, please!" he cried out.

Henry backed down onto the train just in time to hear Arthur's plea, and expressed a look of confusion. Arthur sighed and backed away as he watched the big green engine whistle loudly and chuff away with his train.

"Phew!" Arthur sighed with relief.

He proceeded to back down past a chuckling line of fish trucks.

… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

"Pull yourself together, Arthur, ol' boy!" he murmured to himself, as he shunted the next line of trucks along. "Remember the old days when you held a spotless record!"

He sighed, remembering, then groaned as the trucks giggled and murmured quietly.

"Arthur's in for it now!"

"He'll get it for good!"

Arthur couldn't help himself!

"It's official!" he ranted on. "The other engines will find out about my mistake, or worse…The Fat Controller! I'll be in trouble then!"

He was so busy worrying that he wasn't watching where he was going.

Donald winced and groaned as Arthur bumped the first truck into him.

"Whoops!" Arthur gulped, as he suddenly realized his mistake.

He waited as Donald whistled and pulled the train away, before taking a deep breath.

"Okay," he thought to himself, "let's calm down a bit. I can't go on like this all morning. It's not that big of a deal. I'll just, mmm…tend to the matter after I'm done with all these trucks."

He sighed as he went back about his trucks, who continued to giggle and chatter amongst each other.

At the quayside, Sir Topham Hatt was examining the mess that was made.

"Dear, oh dear," he groaned.

He rose up and turned to the dockyard manager.

"Do you have any idea who caused this?" he asked.

"No, sir," the manager explained. "I came out of my office a while after it all happened! Apparently, Saul and Bulstrode have no idea either!"

"Hmmm…" Sir Topham Hatt thought.

Saul gulped as he eyed him carefully.

"Well," he decided at last. "Come along then. Let's just head into the office and see what we can do about getting a crane over here!"

"Splendid idea," the manager agreed.

Saul watched them both walk off and took a deep breath.

"Phew! That was a close one! Now, next challenge: how do we work around this mess with engines coming through?"

"Loot me!" Bulstrode replied. "I'll tell ya what we can do! Turn in clumsy ol' Arthur! He's the one who caused this mess!"

"Absolutely not!"

"Huh! Why?!"

"We mustn't snitch! There must be another solution!"

"Nothing more I can think of than giving that silly tank engine what's coming to him!"

Saul edged closer towards him and looked him firmly in the eye!

"Now, look here!" he demanded. "Arthur's always worked hard to keep this dockside going; and he's always been there for us when we needed it! So what if he made a small mistake?!"

"Huh!" Bulstrode huffed, eyeing the wreckage. "Doesn't look very small to me!"

Saul sighed and looked at the tumbled shed stray on the track.

"Okay," he decided, "I'll make you a deal. If you can help me keep Arthur's mistake in the dark, I can work as quickly as possible for a whole week!"

"Oh, really?!" Bulstrode wondered, raising an eyebrow.

"Yes!" Saul pleaded. "At least I'll see what I can do to try!"

"A month!"

"Never!"

"Fine then. No deal!"

Saul groaned and whimpered, but was caught off-guard by the sound of Thomas' whistle.

"Thomas!" he gasped.

"Ahem!" Bulstrode coughed remindingly.

"Alright, fine! A month! Let's just not rat him out! Please!"

Bulstrode chuckled grimly as Thomas arrived by Saul's hoist.

"What's happened here, Saul?" he wondered aloud.

"Don't worry, Thomas!" Saul assured him. "It's nothing we, the crew at Norramby, can't fix!"

He turned to face Bulstrode.

"Back down please, Bulstrode!"

"Kinda tense, aren't we?" the barge observed, as he obeyed the crane's command.

Saul groaned as he swooped up the first batch of crates from Bulstrode's hull and moved over towards Thomas' first truck.

"I'll have you outta here in a jiff, Thomas!" he promised.

Thomas eyed the wreckage with concern.

Meanwhile, Arthur continued to have trucks ready for other engines to take out.

Ryan whistled as he pulled his train of fish trucks away, and Arthur whistled back.

He was able to keep a level head as well and get the job done without fuss.

Arthur whistled at Norman as he left with his train and the diesel honked back at him.

He kept his mind so focused on the work at hand that he almost forgot about the accident!

"Thank you, Arthur!" Nia whistled, as she left with her train.

"Any time, Nia!" Arthur whistled back.

He managed slight smile and sighed with relief.

"Finally," he thought to himself, "all the trucks are out on their way and off to market! And without a hitch too!"

He shut his eyes and sighed, thinking, then opened them and gasped, remembering.

"The mess!"' he remembered. "I-I-I've got to head back right away!"

And he raced off.

Arthur made a beeline back for the dockside, but by the time he got there, he found a long line of engines waiting for their fish to be loaded.

"Come on. Saul!" James whistled impatiently. "What is the holdup?!"

"I'm tryin, James!" the crane responded. "But the men and I can only do so much with a knocked down shed in the way!"

"Oh, dear," Arthur groaned. "Not looking good, is it?"

"I'm afraid not, Arthur, ol' pal!" Saul replied.

"Oh, my," Paxton sighed, looking back. "We're going to be late with our trains, Emily!"

"I know," the emerald engine agreed. "And the Fat Controller will be very cross!"

The foreman came out.

"Sorry," he informed , "but there are no cranes available! Rocky, Judy and Jerome are all at other emergencies and Harvey's at the SteamWorks having his crane arm fixed!"

The bad feeling gave Arthur a tingle in his boiler.

"Arthur?"

Arthur gasped and jumped as the foreman turned to him.

"Sir?" he responded, settling down a bit.

"I was wondering if you'd be good enough to take a load of fish trucks to Tidmouth Harbor!"

"With pleasure, sir!" Arthur beamed, and sighed with relief.

"Splendid! I knew I could count on you! They're waiting nearby in our yard!"

"I'm on it!"

And he scampered off. James raised an eyebrow.

"Why was he off in such a hurry?"

"No idea!" Saul steadily replied.

"Huh! Me neither!" Bulstrode sarcastically added.

"Alright, everyone!" Saul insisted, as he finished loading James' last truck, "kindly back up please so that James can get out!"

Emily and Paxton proceeded to do so with James in tow, but before they could think of anything else…,

"Watch out, guys!" Rebecca whistled.

Paxton gasped and slammed on his brakes, with Emily proceeding to do the same, but the former's brake van ended up bumping into Rebecca's, bouncing up and down on the line. Emily's brake van rattled slightly. Saul winced as he watched the whole ordeal.

"Good to go, James!" he said at last.

James looked towards the points set towards him and started off.

"Finally!" he sighed with relief, as he huffily made his way over the crossing.

"Alright, Emily," Saul went on, as the rest of the engines moved back forward, "your turn!"

Arthur fetched his vans of fish and made it out on his way.

"That was a close call!" he murmured to himself. "But still, I do need to do something about it when all my jobs are done!"

He proceeded to exchange a friendly toot-toot with Edward as he passed

The fresh air couldn't help but brighten Arthur's spirits and keep his mind off things.

"Now," he thought to himself, as he got a good run at the track ahead of him, "it's off with these vans to market! I'll get 'em there in good time!"

And Arthur was able to. However, as he arrived, he overheard Percy asking Thomas about the delay.

"So tell me, Thomas. What exactly did happen this morning at the Fishing Village?"

"I wasn't there, Percy!" his friend informed him. "But Saul mentioned something about a knocked down shed!"

"Did he have any idea who caused it?"

"No! But one thing's for certain: it's caused a lot of delays for other engines and their deliveries!"

Percy gasped.

"Oh, dear!"

"Oh, my!" Arthur gasped with horror.

The harbor manager walked up.

"Well done with delivering these vans, Arthur!" he praised. "Now, once they're emptied, they'll be needed over at Knapford!"

"I'll have them there right away, sir!" Arthur promised.

He sighed as he watched the manager walk off and waited as his vans were emptied.

Back at Norramby, the engines were still waiting as Saul loaded their trucks.

"Hurry up, slow crane!" Diesel honked.

Samson blew an impatient whistle after him.

"Serenity Saul! Serenity Saul!" he muttered to himself, as he swooped up the next batch of crates from Bulstrode's hull.

"Oh, bother!" Rebecca expressed. "We're all going to be very late if a breakdown crane doesn't come soon to fix this mess!"

"There!" Saul sighed. "Phew! One more load, Paxton!"

Paxton surveyed the mess from the front, then looked over at Saul.

"How exactly did this incident come to be, Saul?" he asked.

"No idea," Saul murmured, as he moved the next load of crates across his reach of the quay. "Probably just the wind from overnight!"

He had Paxton's last truck loaded up, then sighed.

"Good to go! Now please, everyone, back up so Paxton can get out!"

"Heh! Why?" Diesel thought, scornfully.

"Ahem!" Rebecca coughed, and raised an eyebrow.

Diesel groaned and backed up, as Samson and Rebecca did the same after him.

"Stop, Diesel!" Percy shouted.

The three engines slammed on their brakes but were too late when…

BANG!

Percy opened his eyes to find that Diesel's brake van had derailed.

"Whoops! Sorry!" he groaned.

Diesel groaned with frustration. Paxton backed up and was able to make his way out over the set of points.

"Uh oh," he groaned regretfully.

The foreman arrived and sighed regretfully.

"Sorry, Samson," he informed, "but you're needed back at the Mainland for another delivery. Bulstrode, you'll have to take some of those crates back to the Mainland Canal after you're done with the others here!"

"Grrrrrr!" Bulstrode groaned.

"Alright, Rebecca," Saul suggested, "move up please so Samson can get out!"

"Will do!" the yellow engine replied.

She moved farther up the track and gave Samson enough room to move out, but before she could think of anything else…

"Watch out, Rebecca! Stop!"

Rebecca gasped, but before she could react in enough time, she tumbled over the first pipe of the line.

"Oh, bother!" Saul groaned.

Rebecca sighed sadly. Saul viewed the commotion and frowned.

"Oh, Arthur, please make it back soon!" he expressed.

Arthur dropped the empty wagons off at Knapford, but as he arrived, he heard other engines talking about the delays!

"…and so after I arrived at Maithewaite," Emily admitted, "the stationmaster wasn't happy about the delays. He understood when I told him what happened though!"

Arthur listened glumly on.

"Same thing happened when I dropped my trucks off at Wellsworth!" James added.

"These delays are causing quite a bit of confusion!"

James smirked.

"And whoever caused that shed to fall is going to be in big trouble!"

Arthur gasped. Gordon chuckled as he listened to the two engines talk, and whistled as he left with the express.

"Now what do I do?" he murmured to himself. "I had a perfect streak at the Fishing Village before this incident occurred…"

"Hello, Arthur!" Stafford honked, as he buffered up to the empty wagons.

"GAHHHH!" Arthur cried. "Was that too loud?"

"Was what too loud?" Stafford wondered with confusion.

Arthur thought for a moment, before he was uncoupled from the wagons.

"Oh, ermmmm, nothing. Must be off! Gotta see a coach about a train!"

And he scampered off, as Stafford watched with bewilderment.

But as Arthur made his way back to the Fishing Village, he constantly overheard others talking about the delays…

… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

"…the ship from Tidmouth Harbor was late because of it!" Thomas informed Terrence.

"No!" Terrence gasped.

Arthur observed their conversation as he passed Terrence's field.

"Luckily, I was able to finish my other jobs all in good time though!"

"Thank goodness!" Terrence expressed. "I must say though, bummer about the delay!"

Arthur whimpered as he carried further on.

… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

He crossed over the level crossing at Dryaw, where he caught Bertie and Bulgy talking amongst themselves.

"…Thomas mentioned the delays to me himself, Bulgy! Said he had to rush his coaches there like peas in a pod just so his passengers wouldn't miss their train!"

"Huh!" Bulgy scoffed. "Whoever caused those delays is eventually gonna get it and get it good!"

"Oh, boy!" Arthur groaned.

He hurried home at a slightly quicker pace.

The guilt of the incident increasingly piled up in Arthur's funnel to a point where he thought hard of what to do!

As he arrived back at Norramby, he found the whole quayside in confusion; engines were still waiting to be loaded and Rebecca was derailed!

"Bust my buffers!" he exclaimed.

"Where have you been this whole time?!" Bulstrode exclaimed.

"Well, you see, erm…"

But before he could could answer, he caught Sir Topham Hatt talking to Saul!

"I'm sorry, Saul, but this sure doesn't look like anything the wind's caused! My only solution is to deduce that you were the one high enough with your hull to have done it!"

"But, sir…"

"No excuses, Saul! I am very disappointed in you! This has been a cause for delay! For your punishment, you shall confine to warm-up drills for the rest of the week, right at the crack of dawn! I shall make arrangements right away! Hopefully it will help you think about ensuring caution in loading and unloading!"

Bulstrode sniggered with amusement. Arthur gasped with horror as he went on.

"Now," he thought, "with Judy and Jerome at another emergency, I'll have to see what I can do about getting another engine as soon as possible to fetch Rocky from the Rescue Center."

At last, Arthur cracked.

"Please, sir," he begged, "don't waste your time looking for another engine. The incident this morning was my fault, not Saul's!"

Sir Topham Hatt glanced over with surprise, as Saul widened his eyebrows.

"Yours, Arthur? B-but…I don't understand…"

"I was in such a hurry to get on with my jobs that I didn't wait for Saul to finish loading my trucks. As a result…,"

He gulped in the middle of his sentence, as everyone looked at him hard.

"…the shed knocked over. I didn't want to admit my mistake, sir, but Saul and Bulstrode knew about the whole time and I made sure they wouldn't tell anyone. I've been meaning to do something about it all day, but I wanted to finish my jobs and tend to the matter when I had the time."

"I see," Sir Topham Hatt expressed, understandingly.

He looked across at Saul, then back over at Saul.

"Well, now would be a good time to do so, Arthur!" he admitted. "And while you're at it, I shall think of an elaborate punishment for you!"

"Yes, sir," Arthur agreed, "I will go and fetch Rocky right away!"

And he started off as the Fat Controller watched after him.

Arthur set out to put things right straight away!

"Rocky!" he whistled, as he reached the Rescue Center.

"Arthur?" Rocky wondered, as the tank engine buffered up to him. "What's the matter?"

"Emergency at Norramby! Rebecca's come off the line!"

"Oh," Rocky thought, as Arthur pulled him along.

Arthur and Rocky arrived back at the Fishing Village and soon enough, the pipes were cleared and Rebecca was lifted back onto the rails.

"Alright, Rebecca!" Rocky called out, "I'm coming for you next!"

Rebecca smiled slightly as Rocky's chains were fitted around her and she was lifted up high and back onto the tracks.

Sir Topham Hatt watched the whole rescue operation with interest, then as soon as it was finished, he had more news for Arthur!

"Phew! Thanks, guys!" Rebecca expressed with relief.

"Well done, Rocky!" he congratulated.

Then he turned to Arthur.

"Now, Arthur," he went on, "I am very proud of you for taking the initiative to own up about the incident! It takes a strong engine to do as such. However, I can't express more the seriousness of the delays that you have caused! You shall confine to staying here at Norramby and shunting trucks about for the next week! Hopefully it will give you plenty of time to think about being careful moving forward, especially when it comes to trucks!"

"Yes, sir," Arthur humbly agreed.

And he pulled Rocky away.

After returning Rocky to the Rescue Center, Arthur returned to the Fishing Village to find that all the engines were making it more steadily on their way again.

"Thanks, Saul!" Percy whistled, as he left with his trucks full of fish.

"Any time, Percy!" the crane replied.

He then turned to Arthur.

"Everything alright, Arthur?"

"Yes, Saul! At least now it is!" the tank engine replied. "How bout on your end?"

"Swell, thanks! They managed to spare a ship from the Mainland, thankfully, to deliver the fish crates for the Canal! Bulstrode and I are able to manage a lot better now!"

"Huh!" Bulstrode scoffed.

"Engines are running to time a lot more now thanks to your quick-thinking!"

Arthur smiled meekly yet humbly.

"I'm sorry that my mistake got you into trouble, Saul. I should have done something about it earlier."

Saul smiled back at his friend.

"That's alright, Arthur! I appreciate you owning up to it!"

"This whole day I thought that being on a perfect streak while working in a place like Norramby meant something. I know now that I should never be too afraid to admit my mistakes. It's only one week after all!"

"You'll do great!" Saul encouraged.

He thought for a moment then laughed.

"And besides," he joked, "I'm just glad to not have to do warm-up drills!"

They both shared a good laugh, as Bulstrode just scoffed and attempted to shut his eyes.

"Easy does it now!" Arthur reminded the trucks, as he shunted them about the yard by Norramby.

"On! On! On!" they shouted.

But Arthur was able to pin his brakes on in enough time to slow them down.

"Careful!" he warned them.

"Yes, Arthur!" they meekly replied, more understanding as he shunted them further up the line.

Arthur confined to his punishment by shunting trucks for the next week! Hewas very pleased with himself for having done the right thing and was much more careful with things moving forward!

There we have it: a story with the Norramby crew all about Arthur learning to own up and admit his mistake. The theme is similar to that of the Pack episode with Jack in the title but to me, the conflict and solution felt ironed out here, as Arthur learns as he goes about his day that he needs to put things straight right away and causes a lot more confusion and delay by not immediately fixing the problem. Saul and Bulstrode were also fun to write in supporting roles: Saul wanting to stick it to his friend and not get him into trouble with confidence that he'll fix his mistake, while Bulstrode is just a downright jerk whose only solution is to give Arthur what's coming to him! In the end, Arthur had tough decision to make and seeing Saul get into trouble for it prompted him to own up to it after all. It cost him a chunk of his pride and also the concept of the perfect streak he had at Norramby before the incident occurred. I hope you all enjoyed this story. It came up a little late due to a faulty internet connection so the next entry should be up before the end of the week, and should also another trio of characters in action. Till then, be sure to leave your thoughts on this story, and as always, stay tuned for...
