Chapter 7

It was at Linhir where the Grey Company saw their first signs of the battle. Fire and smoke showed bright and dark against the Great River. The cries of Men fighting each other echoed across the plain, but the sounds of battle were replaced by shouts of terror.

As Aragorn drew nearer he heard someone shouting above the chaos: "Hold fast men! Help has come!"

A tall, dark-haired man on horseback shouted to the soldiers as their enemies fled. While Aragorn approached him, the man glanced nervously at the grey mist of the Dead, but held his ground. The soldiers crowded behind him, wary.

"Tell me your name, sir, and are you the lord of this land?" Aragorn queried.

"Aye," the man answered. "I am Angbor, Lord of Lamedon. My company and I thank you for coming so swiftly."

Nodding, Aragorn replied: "This one thing I ask of you Lord Angbor — to gather what men you can and follow behind us. At Pelargir the Heir of Isildur will have need of you."

The Grey Company departed, leaving an amazed Angbor staring after them.
