"Some folks say that life is cruel." Sparkle sang.
"At the orphanage they fed us inedible gruel." Shane sang, sticking out his tongue in disgust.
"We slept on beds with springs that hurt." Bonnie sang, as her back ached in pain.
"The faucets have hot and cold running dirt." Sparkle continued.
"The windows were broken, the roof was leaky," Shane sang, pointing to the rundown orphanage building that had planks of worn away wood forcing the doors shut, and the roof that was indeed leaking.
"The walls were cracked, the floors were creaky." Bonnie continued, looking at the orphanage that was about to fall apart.
"They shut down the orphanage and now we know..." Sparkle sang sadly.
They all sigh. "Those were the days, we miss it so!" They all sing together.
"And ever since then," Bonnie Lowers her voice. "I've been feeling low." She sang and then she coughed.
Recently, Bonnie's health has not been good, she has a horrible cough, and is starting to get really sick. Unfortunately, the siblings can't exactly afford the money they would need to make her better so they have just had to wait it out. But her health was going quickly, Bonnie needs an operation, but strangely, her siblings don't know exactly why, she just does, apparently.
"Another sub-zero morning!" Sparkle sang, as she was wrapped in a blanket trying to keep warm.
"And still there's nothing to eat!" Bonnie sang, gesturing to the empty cupboards in the little home that they now live in because of the orphanage shutting down.
"My feet couldn't get much colder!" Sparkle sang, as she wrapped a blanket around herself more, as her feet were made of ice, literally.
"Our breath is our main source of heat!" Bonnie sang, Blowing air out, but it was so cold that you could actually see it coming out of her mouth.
"We're so far below the poverty line, we're off the graph!" Sparkle sang, as there was a literal line going down and onto the floor.
"But don't fret, sibs, because things'll get better in time, then you're gonna laugh!" Shane said hopefully, trying to lift the spirits of his siblings.
Bonnie rolled her eyes and said, "Ha!" Because she did not believe her brother.
Meanwhile outside, a chipmunk named Rita was scavenging for food with her friend Kayla, but they weren't having much luck. "poverty and hunger abound here!" Rita sang.
"Yeah, looks like a city dump!" Kayla joined in.
Then, sparkle and her siblings came outside arriving in the village square. "There's only one job to be found here!" Bonnie sang, gesturing to the mime, who wasn't really that interesting. "The town needs a new speed bump!" Sparkle added, as two chipmunks, Dr Simon Seville, and nurse Jeanette Miller rode over it in their horse and carriage.
"Acme Falls was a paradise." Dr Simon said, using the reins to make the horse that they were riding go faster.
"Happiest place on Earth." Nurse Jeanette joined in.
Then all the townsfolk join together in a big group around the square. "But the tax collector's avarice.
Took us for all we're worth!" They all sang. Wishing life could be like it was before.
Meanwhile, Baron von Suggs and Constable Theodore were in their little house they shared, marvelling over the money they received from the town and its residents, while they ate a king-size meal that was possible to feed the whole town.
"My coffers are overflowing!"
Theodore frowned. "All of their shelves are bare!" Theodore sang sadly.
"My profit margin is growing!" Suggs continued.
"They're broke, it seems so unfair." Theodore continues sadly.
Back in the village, the townsfolk were just as sad as before.
"Life's so lousy, we can no longer cope!" The townspeople sang sadly.
Shane walked over to everyone with a big hopeful smile. "Ya gotta cheer up, and never ever ever give up hope!" He sang happily, trying to make everyone else happy.
Then Sparkle and Bonnie were outside a closed shop. "All of the shops are closin!" Sparkle sang.
"Things couldn't get much worse!" Bonnie added.
Outside Ren and Shine's virtually bare tree, Shine was holding some nuts in a ice cube.
"Even my nuts are frozen!" Shine sang disappointedly.
Ren smirked. "Be careful with that last verse." She sang, giving a sly nod and smile to the audience.
Back in town, Simon and Jeanette were trying to convince people to try their elixir. "Hey, step up und try our elixir!
It's good for what hurts!" Simon encouraged.
"Whatever ails you, it can fix her!" Jeanette tried.
"And it's great on deserts!" Simon added.
A little further away, in a mouse sized hut, two mice, named Marcy and Macie, twin sisters, both feeling just as angry. One of them was trying to think logically about it, but the other just seemed to want to have fun.
"Drat, the temperature's falling!" Macie sang annoyed.
"I love when the weather is cool!" Marcy sang, not Helping the situation at all with her enthusiasm.
" A new ice age is calling—" Macie declared.
"Look I can freeze my drool!" Marcy said excitedly, sticking out her tongue to show the audience, making her older and wiser twin sister shake her head unamusingly.
" I have hopes and dreams of ruling the Earth, but here I sit. Watching Mercy make ice sculptures—"
"Out of spit! Narf!" Marcy added.
Back at Ren and Shine's tree, Shine was inside their little kitchen area, frowning at the lack of food options.
Then Ren Emerges from outside with a sour look on her face, arms crossed. " this old tree is finished! "She said in frustration, stamping her foot on the ground angrily.
Shine frowned, turning to face Ren. "Our nut supply's gone, too." Shine said sadly.
"So for dinner we're havin' creamed spinach!" Ren declared, revealing the canned cream spinach she bought from the marketplace.
Shine made a face of pure discussed. "All I can say is spew!" She said, sticking her tongue out.
Back in the Village everyone was still feeling down. "As a town, we're so down, so we mope!" Sparkle and Bonnie sang together.
Shane then walked over to his siblings, grabbing their hands, and spinning them around playfully.
"Ya gotta cheer up, and never give up hope!" He sang proudly.
"We can't cope!" The townsfolk bellowed sadly.
"Ya gotta cheer up, and never give up hope!" Shane repeated.
"Are you a dope?!" They asked.
Shane laughed. "Nope!"
The townsfolk now smiled, just a little bit more hopeful than before.
"Just cheer up and never ever give up hope hope hope hope hope! YEAH!" They all cheered, spirits lifted.
The crowd dispersed, going about their daily lives. "Sibs!" Sparkle called, and just like that they were back at her side.
"C'mon guys, we shouldn't be out here much longer, it isn't good for BonBon's health for her to be out here." Sparkle said worryingly.
"But we have to go to the marketplace, remember?" Shane pointed out.
"With what?" Sparkle asked, folding her arms.
Shane suddenly realised what he just said, and frowned. "Oh yeah." He said defeatedly.
Sparkle put her hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry baby bro, maybe if we ask nicely, Gabrielle Will offer some of her food to us like she did last time." Sparkle said.
"Only cause 'Bonnabelle' worked her cute charm." Shane said with a smirk.
Bonnie growled. "You know you're not supposed to call me that, otherwise you'll get it! "She shouted.
The siblings proceeded to get into another squabbling fight.
You see, Bonnabelle was Bonnie's full name given to her at birth. But the youngest certainly doesn't like the name, and just shortened it to Bonnie or BonBon, and if anyone were to use her full name, accidental or deliberate, the youngest would not be too pleased, getting her mallet out and threatening you with death if you even attempted to say her full name.
Sometimes her brother Shane likes to say it deliberately to get her riled up, which results in the two of them squabbling like they are now.
Sparkle just rolls her eyes, takes a deep breath, and goes into older sibling mode. "Hey! That's enough!" She says in a stern voice, both siblings stop immediately, looking at their older sibling. "Shane, you know Bonnie doesn't like that name, so please respect her wishes and don't call her that, and Bonnie, don't threaten people like that, politely telling people that you don't like that name is enough, okay?"
Bonnie wanted to retort, but one stern glare from her sister made her stay quiet. Satisfied, sparkle spotted Gabrielle, quickly veering Shane and Bonnie towards her. "Hey Gabrielle!" They say at the same time. "Hey guys, Here, I was just at the marketplace earlier, and I picked these up for you." She said handing them over, ruffling Shane's fur.
"Thank you, Gabrielle, this means so much to us, thank you!" Sparkle said gratefully, handing them over to Shane to carry, as little Bonnie was getting tired.
Gabrielle left after that, going over to her friend Rita and Kayla.
"C'mon BonBon, it's time to go home." Sparkle said softly, picking up her very tired sister.
"But I'm not tired!" Bonnie whined.
"You need rest, sweetie, if you want to get better you have to rest." Sparkle said motherly, beginning to rock her back and forth as they walk back home..
"Sleep like a dream sweet sister, you're still
Young, and you need your rest.
Safe from the cold of winter, with my love,
I will keep you warm.
I will fight off all the monsters.
Creeping throughout the night.
Why let all your fears take over.
I will never leave your side.
Deep down inside I'm fearful, you're still.
Young, I must stand my ground.
Often this world is vicious, is my love,
Enough to keep pace.
Long for this world is hostility.
Keep kindness in your heart.
Hold firm when I'm not around you.
You must keep your shining light,
But, sleep for now sweet sister, I am here,
I will keep you safe.
Though this world can be bitter, with my love,
I will find a way.." Sparkle sang softly, Bonnie now fast asleep in her arms.
Despite sparkle putting on a brave face for her siblings, sparkle was worried. Bonnie's health was deteriorating faster than ever. The youngest only managing to last a couple hours before her energy would drain completely and she be too tired to do practically anything. Eating was especially difficult for her, every time she ate something, not even 30 minutes later it would come back up, so the youngest was only allowed to eat soup and soft bread, as that was all she could stomach without throwing up every time.
She just wished she could afford the operation Bonnie needed.
She had thought about going out to work to get some Ha'Pennies, because one singular Ha'Penny would be just the ticket to get her sister feeling better.
But, then she thought about it, she couldn't leave her siblings on their own, despite them persistently telling her that they could take care of themselves, she just didn't want to risk it.
They were too vulnerable on their own, especially after what happened to their parents.
But that didn't matter right now.
They shortly arrived home, Shane putting the bags he was carrying on the table quietly so he wouldn't wake up his little sister. Sparkle put her in her bed, pulling over the blue covers and kissing her forehead. " Just cheer up, and never ever give up hope." She whispered to her sister, before closing the curtain which led to her room.
Never give up hope. That was hard. But she would try.
Anything for her siblings.
