Jacob walked around the area. He wanted to make sure it was safe. He looked around subtly while meandering. When he finally confirmed that it was safe to leave. He walked towards his car.
At his car, he looked around one last time, hoping that there was no-one who could possibly cause any issues. Fortunately, there wasn't anyone. He entered his car and turned the ignition. The engine rumbled aggressively before settling down and letting the car move. He sighed as his car jerked forward and cruised along the road. When returning to his home, he tried to push the envelope of the law as much as possible. He didn't want to break it but he wanted to get home as soon as possible. This did mean that he slightly speeding half the time but he hoped no-one would notice that small detail. That was when he passed a car he shouldn't have. "Shoot, that was a police car, and I didn't even notice it until it was too late." The sirens blared from behind and Jake quickly pulled over, hiding his briefcase under his seat.
A tired lion walked over, slightly slumped."Sir, do you know why I pulled you over?"
"Sorry Johnson, I was in a slight rush." He then took notice of the lion's posture. "Graveyard shift?"
"Yeah, you know it. Why did you drive so fast, kit?" Johnson asked unenthusiastically, hoping it would just speed by.
"Well, wanna get home before my fiance kills me." Officer Johnson chuckled at that remark. Jacob knew what was coming next, and quickly leaned over to reach his driver's license. "Anyways officer, here is my license and my ID."
"I have to ask, how are you holding up?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, two officers died and two were kitnapped, possibly dead. I'm just curious how you are. It can't be easy to let that just sit there."
"I don't … know... I just tried to keep myself occupied to not think about it."
"Listen, I know what I will say will sound blunt but trust me, just deal with it head on, let it all out to bear. It will be easier later." He sighed and looked at the two cards he was given. "It's all good here." He gave the two cards back. "Take care and remember, an angry wife will get you killed. Sorry, I meant kill you." He raised his paw and chuckled lightly. "I would know."
Jacob noticed the silver line across one of his fingers. "Duly noted. See you around buddy."
"Yeah, don't get into trouble too quick. I'll see ya later." Johnson did a small wave and let Pawson go.
The raccoon exhaled heavily then drove off. It wasn't what he wanted but it could've been worse. He decided that now, he could drive a tad bit slower and more carefully to avoid being stopped anymore. He watched his surrounding area carefully as he turned from place to place all the way to his home. He saw many new things today, many of which brought a smile to his face. Kits laughing and playing, mammals talking and laughing. He looked on with glee and thought about how much he is happy to serve such fine mammals.
Driving past them all, he found a new sense of reason, a reason to continue. It wasn't for him, it never was, it was for all of them. It wasn't for adventure, or for cool stories or any glory; it was for the city. He nodded to himself and turned the radio on. He was in a surprisingly chirpy mood now, and he was finally at content with what he was doing.
He arrived home, hoping that his fiance wasn't there. He opened the door and... "WHERE WERE YOU?!"
"Oh boy." He tried to hide the briefcase behind his back, pretending it didn't exist.
"NO, NO NO NO. YOU DID NOT TAKE THAT AS WELL." It was quite obvious that she noticed it. He smiled awkwardly and innocently, while also pulling his badge out of his pocket. She walked up to him and started poking him. "YOU. ARE. ON. BREAK! TAKE IT!"
"Sweetie-"
"No, don't 'Sweetie' me. I'm mad at you right now." She then dramatically crossed her arms and turned her whole body away.
"Okay, Mary. Please, I learned where Judy was and I couldn't let my police partner die when I could save her." That was when it clicked with him. He froze for a second The word 'die' created a sudden realisation. He killed a mammal. He killed the bear to save them. Sure, he was drugged out of his mind but it was still a living mammal he ended. He panicked and threw the case away then ran into the opposite corner of the room while staring at his hands and breathing somewhat heavily. He started aggressively scrubbing his paws against each other and began to build up regret. "No, no no no, I-I didn't want to, I-I had no choice. Oh who am I kidding? I had a choice, I-I didn't need to." Mary turned around, slightly confused by his behaviour.
She slowly walked up to him, observing his actions closely. She then looked at the case, knowing the contents of the diabolical object. She sighed gently and crouched down to his level, kissing him on the forehead. He quickly shied away from it, feeling as though he wasn't worthy of such acts of affections. "It's okay, you're okay. It doesn't matter anymore. You're safe here and now. That's all that matters, right?"
Jacob looked up morosely, "H-how can you be so kind to someone like me?"
"Because you are the mammal I love. My dumb little goofball. It's okay, you said it yourself, you had to save them, right? And you did, so if it means anything, you did the right thing, but that, that has to be thrown away."
"I'd agree but there is something so much deeper than is being let on here. I feel I need it to get my job done." He shook his head. "Oh my word, I'm a monster."
"No, no you're not." She replied gently and softly, her words caressing his ears enough to calm him down. "You're just worried that something bad will happen and that's okay but we can deal with it together. We don't need those things." She then stood up. "Come on the floor is dirty, if you are going to sulk somewhere, at least do it someone cleaner." She smiled radiantly, infecting his scared and compromised feelings with ones of joy. She stuck out her paw, insinuating he should take it and get up." Jacob slowly turned his head upwards towards her and stared at the paw with slight confusion. "My paw won't bite or scratch you." She commented.
He shook his head then slowly reached for it. He still wasn't sure if he should but, he couldn't say no to her. Their paws then linked together firmly in between them and she started to pull him up. As he felt her pulling him up, he decided to get up himself. As he stood up, he looked at her. "I don't deserve you."
She slung her arms around him. "And I don't deserve you, but here we are."
The two stood there, hugging each other. "Thank you, for being here and everything."
"Of course, why wouldn't I be here for you?" She asked with a low level smooth voice. The two stood there for a few seconds and Jacob started to squeeze tighter as tears started to form in his eyes. "Calm down, calm down. Nothing happened, okay? Just remember to breathe, nice and slowly." Pawson slowly nodded. She then let go of him and took a step away, before grabbing his cheeks and staring into his eyes. "Look at me." She calmly and gently commented. "You are a kind and good mammal, no action you commit will change that. You know what the right thing to do is and I know that you will always act with your heart." She then looked away and looked at her ring on her paw. "That's why I said yes."
"Do you know what the worst part is? I can't discuss this for a while since I can't tell anyone what I did."
"We could get a private therapist. They could help you instead." She blurted out reassuringly.
"You think so much more than me." He smiled. Then after a few seconds. "I'm so happy you said yes."
"This is your last day off, yes?"
"Yes, why?"
"Then let's have some fun." She said with a giggle in her voice.
Two hours later.- Bogo's Office
The buffalo wiped his forehead, trying to wrap his head around the situation that has unfolded. There was an illegal game being set up, where they were pitting savage predators against fearing prey. The building was searched, and there were piles of disposed bodies, waiting to be discarded somewhere else. "How do we handle this? Are there any more? Who knows how many? We can't just search every larger building but how many could be in danger?" He sighed. He then pushed his reading glasses up a bit and read the report of the events. "Many were already zip-tied? So there was an anonymous group that helped." He then thought about it for a few seconds. He remembered Judy's slip up and the fact that a raccoon helped them. "Pawson, just like who I partnered you up with. Can't say I'm mad." He carried on reading. "Many bullet holes, boxes filled with many different contents including but not limited to drugs, organs, sugars. The drug Judy is intoxicated with." He groaned, realising what this meant. "Many arrests processed and many put into prison."
He placed the report down, closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead with his fingers. "I hate this job sometimes." He then looked at his watch and realised that Wolford would be entering any time now. He straightened his body, composed himself and looked at the door.
After a few minutes of sitting like this, Wolford knocked on the door. He then swiftly yet gently opened the door with a serious yet polite demeanour. "Chief, you asked for me?"
"Yes, yes, please sit down. I would like to discuss your next case."
"Sir, I was told to take it easy, that I can't do things that exert my body too much."
"I understand but that is not an issue Sergeant." Wolford was about to respond but then stopped himself. He was in disbelief, he was being promoted. "What I propose is that you have a new partner, one that is missing a partner as well, due to recent events." Bogo refused to discuss what those events were but needn't do so, since Wolford understood what was meant. "But with this recent bust, I believe there are many more just like this and well, I need some capable officers to find them. Your partner will be Officer Juliet Fangmeyer, I hope you don't mind the change."
"Of course not sir, but what should we do when we find another place like this one." Wolford moved his paw to point at the document that laid on the table.
"Call it in, I will have a team ready on standby at all times whenever you are active, to enter and secure the building."
"Wouldn't that require legal permits and warrants?"
"Not when you see suspicious activity, it doesn't. And with this, you will have a lot of suspicious activity."
"Do you think we will need undercover operations, sir?"
"Perhaps, but I would hope it doesn't come to that."
"Sir, one last question, do you think this is linked to the assassination of Lionheart?"
Bogo paused for a second as he gathered his thoughts, the question was so sudden even though, he should've expected it. He then spoke quietly, trying to feign confidence. "It most likely isn't." was his answer, although he knew they were linked.
Wolford then stood up and headed for the door. "Before I forget, any progress with Hopps and Wilde? As much as I think he is insufferable, he doesn't deserve everything that happened to him, neither of them do. I'd like to know."
"They are still missing, unfortunately." He lied through his teeth. "But it will be announced when they are found."
"Thank you sir." With that, Wolford left.
Bogo picked up his phone and called Jacob. After a couple rings, he answered. "Officer Pawson, would it be okay to speak to you now?"
"Err, yes sir, of course sir, why wouldn't it?"
"It is still your break, I was just making sure."
"Sir, I am ready to work already, if you need me I will return." He stated, trying to seem polite.
"I can tell, with what you have done already, I assume you know what the issue is and, against what everyone knows so far, that Hopps and Wilde are safe. Before you try to argue against it, although I should, I will not reprimand you. You did your duty and put other mammal's lives beyond your own, but may I ask, how did you find out?"
"Sir, it was a few informants that Hopps and I share that helped with this."
"Hmm, some confidential informants? They seem like dangerous mammals to know this kind of information."
"With all due respect, sir, this job is dangerous, on what was essentially my first job, two close colleagues died, two were kitnapped and I only survived due to sheer luck."
Bogo sighed as he was dreading the next question he was about to ask. Both answers would be bad ones to him. "Do you know any other locations?"
"Yes sir, I have a map that points to all of them right here."
"That is good, you will join Fangmeyer and Wolford in their endeavours to find all of them."
"Yes sir, I understand sir."
"Good, you will join them tomorrow."
"Thank you sir." Bogo hung up.
"That's a problem solved but then the question arises, can we trust him?" He muttered to himself, unsure of whether he is doing the right thing right now.
Then there was another knock on the door. Bogo turned to look at it and instantly composed himself. "Come in."
It was Fangmeyer. "Thank you sir, I wanted to ask about something that I just heard about, is it true that me and Officer Wolford are going to be working alongside one another?"
"Yes, you and Sergeant Wolford will now be partners. Is that an issue?"
"No sir, I just wanted confirmation."
"Would that be all?"
"Yes sir, I have some paperwork to finish." Fangmeyer left the room and left Bogo alone again.
"I hate it when they lie like that." Bogo commented, already knowing that she didn't have any paperwork to fill out since she wasn't doing much at the station and had no assigned cases for the past week. However, he had no desire to see what she was doing.
Fangmeyer left the office confused. On one paw, she was elated to have another partner as working on your own is quite difficult, not impossible, but difficult. On the other paw, she just lost her partner due to extreme events, and she didn't want him to be replaced so quickly. It just felt wrong. She was headed to the bottom floor and then paced around the atrium. Clawhauser at one point called out to her but she ignored it, as she was deep in thought.
What finally brought her out of thought was when Wolford stopped her. She knocked into him and felt embarrassed about the previous mindless action. "Sorry about that." She quicklky blurted out as the wolf barely kept his balance.
Don't worry about it, no harm no foul." He smiled. "So, Fangmeyer, we're partners now, right?" He then sighed. "Hard to believe that all that happened."
"You could say that again. Grizzoli was just so tough, to believe he would be just murdered just like that is..." She trailed off, trying to hold back tears with all her might.
"Hey, hey, hey. It's fine, it's in the past, don't dwell on it too much." He sighed. "All we can do is make it right." Fangmeyer nodded. "Besides, we know who is responsible and I can't believe he was called a friend."
"I-I don't wanna talk about it." Fangmeyer shied away.
"I get it, but I have to interrogate him soon anyways." Wolford shrugged while shoving his paws in his pockets. "Ugh." He grabbed his head. "I need to get my meds, be right back." Fangmeyer turned back towards him and saw the wolf was slightly drowsy.
"How long did you go without taking any?"
"It's fine." Wolford started to walk away. Fangmeyer then started to notice that he was slightly starting to limp. She read the writing on the wall and sprinted towards him. He then started to collapse forwards but fortunately, Fangmeyer caught him. "Maybe, just maybe... it's not fine."
"Yeah, I noticed."
"Thanks, by the way." Wolford coughed out through his tired expression.
"We're partners now, right? We look out for each other." She smiled and then helped walk him to the medic.
"Yeah, we are. We are." He smiled in return as best as he could. The two moved carefully to the infirmary, where the doctor was sitting by his desk doing nothing.
"What took you so long?" The doc questioned almost instantly. "You do realise that these are needed for you to function somewhat healthily, right?"
"Yeah, yeah, I got sidetracked."
The deer shook his head and handed a pill over to Wolford. "Congrats on the promotion. You deserved it."
"Thanks doc, I just don't know what to think right now to be honest."
"I... understand. Losing a friend is one thing, but having him be a foe is something else. I can't imagine how you feel right now."
A/N: So, you might be wondering, why so little writing from me? Well, funny you ask, but the answer is simple, I don't like the excuse, because that's what it really feels like, an excuse but I was extremely busy, like ungodly amounts of hectic busy. But finally, I'm done with that, now for part two where I might just pull the plug on everything and cry myself to sleep.
Anyways, I thought that it would make sense to show that everyone is not okay, the police are still pretty shook from the events that occurred. But they need to keep a stoic mindset and keep going.
With all that said and done, who knows what will happen next (Not me, definitely).
And with all that said and done, I will see you... IN THE NEXT ONE, bye guys.
