Taking a deep breath she looked at him. "Jacob and I were in love"
When Hotch heard those words needless to say he was shocked. A federal agent in love with a criminal, he hadn't said anything but let her continue on her own terms. Anna had to gather her thoughts so she wouldn't lose it telling the story. She had barely been holding it together now.
"I had a case right before I transferred to the Chicago office, Jacob was involved. But our past isn't just about the case, he and I grew up together. Our houses were right next to each other, he always hung out with my brother and me. He was closer to me than my brother, he just saw something in me that others didn't. When we were 15 that's when we started dating, one night we..slept together. I got pregnant. We were 15 and scared, we didn't know what to do, I was about a month in and we hid it from our parents, and right as we were about to tell them I miscarried. It killed both of us, it hurt him more than me, and it changed him so much when I tried to help him he pushed me and everyone away. He blamed me for miscarrying the baby as if I had something to do with it, he thinks I took something to miscarry he's never forgiven me. Jacob started drinking and using it to cope with the pain, his parents couldn't get through to him, I couldn't, and nobody could. His parents spent a fortune on his rehabs he never stayed clean and sober for more than a few months and slipped right back into it. I tried not to give up on Jacob but eventually, I had to move on with my life and let him live how he wanted. He dropped out of school and became an alcoholic junkie. I went to college and studied criminal justice and law. I went to law school. Eventually, I joined the FBI academy at Quantico and I became FBI. I worked my ass off to get to where I am. Then I got a case, a new cartel was moving product up from Bolivia and Colombia, I was assigned to go undercover and collect intel about the product, who was doing it, and all that. When I saw Jacob with them I never thought he'd go that far as to join a cartel let alone do their dirty work. When he saw me he was just as angry with me then as he was when I told him I was done with him but during my time under we were talking again, hanging out. He told me he never blamed me for the miscarriage, he let the anger and grief consume him. We had been falling in love again, I couldn't lie to him but I also had to maintain my cover. The most I could do so he wouldn't get arrested was to tell him to leave and not look back, I was shoving him out the door. I almost had him out when my team had breached and taken down the cartel, arrested everyone involved including Jacob, they seized everything they could find. Drugs, money, and weapons, they even found shipment containers with people inside, men, women, and even children. When Jacob was getting cuffed that's when he realized I was the leak in the organization, he yelled out saying he hated me, his love for me was dead, and that he would find a way to make me pay. This is all my fault"
Anna turned to wipe the tears from her eyes, she had never told anyone about Jacob, not even Hank. It was a part of her past she had locked away. Hotch had put a hand on her shoulder.
"This wasn't your fault, you had no idea what Jacob was going to do, more so you were in a delicate position under cover. You couldn't reveal your status without endangering your life, and the safety of your team, you had to do what you had to for the case"
"Yeah for the damn case and look at what this job costs me. Everything. My parents died while I was on assignment in Colombia, I wasn't told till after I came home and missed their funerals. My own brother hates me. That piece of shit bastard took my daughter and he doesn't know if she's even alive or not and because of what he did it wrecked my relationship. This job has cost me to much and I can't take it anymore"
Hotch knew when most agents said that, they had been at their breaking points with the job. It was a highly demanding, very dangerous, and violent job. It was hard to maintain a personal life outside of the agency when you get called back right after walking through your front door, ready to pass out. You never had any time for yourself.
"Anna think about this before you make any rash decisions"
"Hotch, I made my decision years ago. After I'm done working on my daughter's case, I'm done. This is going to be my last case and nothing you say will change my mind"
Meanwhile
The remaining members of the BAU had touched down in Chicago and made their way to the 21st district. JJ had been distracted the entire way, she was fearing the worst. Jordan was kidnapped 12 years prior, she was born around the time Anna had her and when she disappeared. She and Will's daughter was actually Anna's daughter. Anna and this Sergeant Voight's. It was all pieced together.
What was making her heart break more was the fact Jordan's adoption was going to be null and void after the case. With neither Hank nor Anna signing their parental rights away, both of them are still in their legal rights to take Jordan back. JJ knew if it were to even go to court the judge would favor the biological parents and award them custody.
She and Will loved Jordan with all of their hearts, she was theirs. She may not have been biologically their child but she was still theirs. Family was more than DNA it was the love and care they showed and provided to each other. She knew a couple of things for sure, the first they would solve this case and bring down the people taking these innocent lives and destroying them. And the second, by the end of the case she wouldn't have her daughter anymore and everyone that is involved, their lives would all be turned upside down.
